Really interesting but I would have loved to hear the message and if that message could give any insight on the original owner of the dress. Was she telegraphing locally or maybe even working in 1888 for a telegraph company? What was her status in society given this beautiful and elaborate pattern on the bustle dress? Did the text give any indication as to where this message could be allocated?

This still doesn’t answer my biggest question though… what was this seemingly innocuous series of weather codes (I’m guessing maybe a weekly or 10 day forecast?) doing sewn into a small hidden pocket on the underside of a dress that (realistically) you couldn’t just hike the bottom hem up and reach.
Was it common to purposely sew hidden pockets (filled with paper notes) into dress skirts? I’m not being facetious, I really am curious!
I once discovered the remains of old newspapers (folded into hard squares and pasted to the cardboard between the inner lining and crocodile skin outer shell) inside an antique doctor’s bag while repairing a tear in the fabric lining. But that at least made sense to me. It helped stiffen the structure/shape of the bag while also providing a slightly cushioned barrier between the exterior and softer more delicate interior. But a single folded note in a small discrete pocket literally sewn all the way up around the note? Why?

    • @pauljensen5699

Back in the 1970s I worked on a ship and one of my duties was to listen to the marine weather radio forecast and reduce it down to something like that. I can't recall the formula now. I did this every morning. Haven't thought about it in ages.

Could have been even better with more details. Probably a PBS show would have been ideal.

How does one wash such a garment without causing tears and ink blotting in the paper note? Just curious.
