      Enjoy the blossoms! I found it funny how in London no one cares about the cherry blossoms nearly as much as in Japan.

    Cherry blossom season was amazing, went to Ueno Park and it was crowded, but looking at all the trees blooming was beautiful. It was also the time for people to picnic underneath the trees; the funny part is the next morning, I turn on the hotel TV and notice the police and paramedics carrying people out of the park, many of them from too much drinking, and I said to myself, "hey, I was there!"

    Thanks Amy for another great video. Last year, in the middle of March, we got to enjoy the cherry bloosoms in Tokyo. We didnt expect it at all, and walked trough Ueno park to go to Yanaka, and there were so many people there enjoying hanami. So the next day, we went to Nakameguro, and it was lovely. It was very crowded, but so well organised, and as japanese people are so respectul of others, it was never uncomfortable. Even for me, who really doesnt like crowds.
    Another nice experience is from a previous trip to Japan, where we were there just before the cherry blossom. We had found a nice bar/restaurant in gion in kyokto, and they severed sakura processo (processo with a hibiscus flower in it).

    • @cakeswithfaces

      I've always found that too - even when it's crowded in Japan, it's not as bad as other places because people tend to be more respectful and considerate. That's one of the things I always miss about Japan. Glad you caught the sakura in some of the top spots!

      @@cakeswithfaces yes we did! It was about 1hr 45 from Shinjuku station first on the Yamanote line then changed to the Keikyu line. It really didn’t feel like it was that long on the train though. We paired it with Yokohama in the afternoon and we had plenty of time to explore both areas with no real rush for trains. I was going to originally pair it with Kamakura as that’s also fairly accessible but the weather got a bit rubbish towards the middle of the day so I thought I’d go to the cup noodle museum where it’s dry 🤣

    Another hidden spot to avoid crowds I can recommend is the Shakujii river. You can take a train from Ikebukuro to the Toshimaen amusement park station and from there go up along the river. It's full of cherry blossoms and there are almost no people.

    I went to Tokyo in Easter 2006 and arrived bang in the middle of cherry blossom season. I was shocked by the crowds in Ueno park, and the blue tarpaulins they put on the floor under the trees for hanami, reserved for groups in advance to sit on at prearranged times and have their picnics. It seemed too bright and plasticky for such a romantic activity! 😄
    Shinjuku-koen was more natural, we had a picnic there and although it was busy there was plenty of room to sit near the trees. You have to pay a small entry fee, which probably keeps it from being completely rammed like Ueno. But the queue to buy the tickets was long!
    I’m going back with my family at the end of March, so looking forward to seeing what has changed and what stays the same. 🌸

    • @cakeswithfaces

      If you buy them on Klook, check if they're allocated to a specific date. I believe the boat tickets on there don't guarantee you a spot on a particular day.
      You can buy the train tickets from any JR station in the Kansai region, so I'd recommend getting them as soon as you arrive in Kansai, and get there early as boat tickets are first come first served.

    Absolutely, it's essential to be respectful when photographing cherry blossoms. Manipulating the branches can be seen as disrespectful, as cherry blossoms hold cultural significance in Japan. It's best to admire them without disturbing their natural state.

    Hi Amy, I do you think I’m probably gonna be in between plum blossoms and cherry blossoms with my travel dates I will be in Japan from March 7 through March 22 in the Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka areas but if you have any tips for early viewing spots please let me know.

      I'd look up spots for early blooming cherry blossoms. Towards the end of your trip especially, you should start to see some! 🤞

      Look up spots for late blooming sakura! That should be the exact time for cherry blossoms at the Mint in Osaka if you'll be near there.

    Cherry blossoms are very nice, but what about cherries?
    Do all these cherry trees actually produce edible cherries?

    • @cakeswithfaces

      I'm no horticulturalist 😝 but I believe that any fruits they produce aren't ones you'd want to eat! They're bred to have pretty flowers, not tasty fruit. But cherries are grown in Japan - Yamagata's known for them.

    • @cakeswithfaces

      Check the official cherry blossom forecast - I'd expect you'll need to go north to catch them as Tokyo, etc will be over by early April. Maybe north Tohoku / Hokkaido or in the mountains where it's cooler.

    • @cakeswithfaces

      That's too late for the main cherry blossom season I'm afraid! (I've been at that time!). You may spot one or two as you go around - it might be worth looking up where you can see late blooming varieties. If you take a trip to northern Tohoku, you'd be able to see them in full bloom there, where they bloom later. The bright side is that mid April's a fairly quiet time to visit Japan, so everywhere will be less crowded than during cherry blossom season!

    Hi Amy,
    Which airline do you use to fly from London to Japan? Unfortunately, plane tickets have become more expensive.

    • @cakeswithfaces

      Yes, they're so expensive now! 😭 I'm not loyal to any particular airline; I'll go with whichever has the best deal at the time - the fares change so much. If they were all the same price, I'd fly with ANA. I prefer a direct flight because it's less tiring, but it usually costs more.

    • @tinasleeman4701

      We found flights for our imminent trip so expensive. Direct flights in economy were £1600 each 😮 we have booked indirect, via Beijing, with Air China for £700 each.

      I have traveled to Japan 2 times so far.
      I have always flown with FinnAir & JapaAir. My return tickets (Economy class) were always under £1000.
      I managed to upgrade my ticket for the return trip (JapanAir) (premium economy, cost me +£222).
      But now for the autumn period, there are only Etihad and possibly BritishAir with good flight times under £1000.
      I don't fly with a Chinese airlines. :)

    • @cakeswithfaces

      You'll probably find it's busy at the start of your trip, but the middle of April's pretty quiet, especially at places like Tokyo Disney. I've been at that time and it's a great time to go. And good call on leaving just before Golden Week - most people in Japan are off work then so it's busy, but it's quiet before that! Sounds like a nice long trip!
