    I keep a stockpile of water enhancers, jerky, and peanut butter. During Hurricane Matthew I lost an entire deep freezer of food. I now emphasize shelf stable non refridgerated food in addition to my freezer. This is important information.

    last year after being prepped for 8 years i unpacked and ate my food , used my water supply coz i thought I'm nuts nothing is ever going to happen !! now i'm trying to prep in a week, im almost there, im packing small tins of tuna, nuts, freeze dried stuff like soups/rice/ pasta. energy bars , dates, protein powder, tub of vitamins high in vit C, and bee propolis, its good for the immune system and can help clear up infections .

    All fantastic suggestions! I totally agree that there should be a balance of ready to eat and foods that need to be “warmed” or cooked. Great vid!

    When I used to do a lot of air travel, I would bring along some small packages of Combos (those little pretzel nuggets filled with either peanut butter or cheese), fun size Snickers bars, high protein trail bars and small packages of trail mix. I kept the sizes small just in case we got stuck on the tarmac for hours so I could give some of the food to the passengers in the seats next to me because it is rude to eat when others are hungry. These items would also be good to put in a go bag because they pack a lot of calories in a small space and do not need rehydrating or heating.
    For cross country travel in my truck, I can bring some food that is a bit more odiferous that what would be appropriate on an airplane. My favorites are the little packets of tuna salad or chicken salad that come with a small packet of crackers. I also like to bring pudding cups and fruit cups because their weight is not an issue when traveling by vehicle. This kind of snack food for lunch on the road beats paying too much for a drive-through fast food greasy meal and would be good to have when evacuating in a vehicle.
    Any kind of meat jerky or sausage sticks that do not need refrigeration are good to bring on a hike or to store at work in a desk drawer or personal locker. Cheez-It crackers also provide a lot of fatty, salty, filling carbs. Lightweight cylindrical tubes of Pringles potato chips or a similar type of Lay's chips in the plastic tube can provide a lot of quick energy if you would rather not rely on a chocolate candy bar or sweetened dried fruit for quick energy when traveling on foot. Single-serving packets of Gatorade powder are also good to have in your go bag so you can turn a bottle of plain water into an electrolyte replacement drink.

    I put 2 kits together after the last video I saw that you posted on making your own MREs. I tore into one after getting stuck at work during a snow storm. Worked great, I did cheat, i had a microwave as my heater.

    For the recipes that require milk I substitute coffee creamer for the milk taste great

    The knorr sides that require milk can be done without it. It only needs a little bit more water and it will be good to go.

    If nothing else a large candle in a tin can with holes punched around the sides for air flow can make a good heater. You will still need another vessel to hold the food or water, but another can will work if you don't have a sauce pan or large Billie cup.

    Great video, good pick on items. Prepping doesn't have to be expensive, this looks like what most backpackers carry. If you wanna go super cheap on that coffe, ditch the stove and ranger lip it lol

    LOL but remember if you are in the middle of a riot situation you go to an area where they have already gone through and you can use on of their fires that they left in their wake to cook some food. I would love to be able to buy some of that stuff here like the tuna in a pouch and the singles of the Spam.

    • @Iridium242
      @Iridium242  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      aha great idea.. recycle that fire! You are in the UK right? They dont have the spam singles there?

    • @KahlestEnoch
      @KahlestEnoch 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No I am in Canada and we don't have the singles here, I can buy them on Amazon.ca however the price is stupid over 100 for 6 slices.

    I carry the heat and serve microwave rice by Uncle Bens. Can eat out of bag, but it’s a little tough. You can boil the bags to warm up if needed.
    I also carry the Peanut butter single serve cups. Per unit cheaper than MRE PB and have similar expiration dates. Plus they are loaded with calories and protein.

    All of those items you showed are really good items for the reasons you explained 👍 I've got everything you've put out there but I hadn't seen the Nutella small packs until now...I'll be on the lookout for them now tho 👍 I do take the rice and break it down into single servings and put it into a ziplock "Snack" bag, a much smaller size 😉 I also carry a packet of instant gravy and add a small portion of the pack to the rice (after cooking the rice first....LOL), then I'll add a cut up beef stick to the mix, IMO...really filling & good tasting 😉 TFS

      Items you mentioned similar to what have. Get creative and you'd be surprised what you can create. I stay away from mountain home products and MREs to due cost. A person can organize a good food bag with variety at a fraction of the cost of of other expensive products. Same goes for building your own medical kit. It's all about common sense an affordability

    Instant coffee doesn't need to be cooked, FYI. In fact, one of the best cold coffees I have ever had, calls for cold water and instant coffee. It dissolves and tastes just fine cold. In a pinch, or for a cold treat with milk.

    I like the great value at Wal-Mart granola bars 24 in a box for around 4 buck's. Not as big as cliff bars but value wise get more bang for your buck.

    I like your ideas. Depending on the situation, no cook is wonderful from a time and fuel standpoint and not attracting attention. I seriously favor no cook for a GHB. Water causes me the most concern. I don't have the luxury of a river, stream or lake every mile or so like some parts of the country.

      Agree on that, its one of the reasons I carry a Silcock Key, if you have ever seen those tiny doors on the side of buildings, you can open them up and use the key to open the faucet and get water, but I also keep a good supply of water in all my bags. I find a camelback bladder inside is perfect for a get home bag.

    • @05generic
      @05generic 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have a sillcock key in my get home bag and carry a decent amt of water, but wonder about some scenarios -probably needlessly.

    One thing I think you should stress on your food videos:
    The average American is not used to the level of physical activity they'll be engaging in when a disaster / get home / Bugout situation happens. Even MORE important than the food is while you're in this situation, drink a LOT of water, ESPECIALLY if you're not in the best physical shape. Even the strongest athletes have to contend with Lactic Acid buildup if not properly hydrated, and muscle cramps WILL happen. Let me tell you, those HURT, and can stop you dead in the water-no pun intended, lol!
    Water is THE NUMBER ONE ITEM in any emergency kit / preparedness plan!
