The way Hugh caresses himself makes the title song and Music of the Night so much more intimate than I've ever seen. He makes the Phantom more sexually in tune with his needs, while Ramin is dominant but he shows innocence here and there. If I could combine a little more of Hugh's touching with Ramin himself (since he's my favorite phantom) then I would be in Heaven.
Actually the Music of the Night has a strong sexual vibe, also heard speculations this also appears to the final vocals of the Title Song... So actors who (like Hugh) perform them in a more sexual way are not wrong with their interpretations. If they're not exaggerating, of course :)
The first time I have ever heard 'imagination' sung truly beautifully. Most phantoms just sing the notes and let their vibrato do the work for them. Hugh makes every word unique. He is a god amongst the ranks of Phantom.
Hugh Panaro's "Phantoming" is absolutely EXQUISITE. His acting, his voice, his look....hands down THE best Phantom since Michael Crawford created the character. I don't think I took a breath the whole 12 minutes. I hate myself for never getting on a plane to go be in the same room as this before he hung up the mask.
You're right! I am SO thankful for the amazing videos available to watch 1,879+ times and soak up his amazing talent.:) I keep hoping he'll miss the mask though, and put it back on for ONE more stint....;)
I’ll second this one. Who knows, hopefully he will come back! But until then there is TH-cam, it’s how I have seen sooo many more phantoms also why I can chose more favorites 👍 and least favorites 👎. Hugh is definitely a favorite!
LTheOpheliac Completely ! You just have to listen to his voice. Sometimes, he sounds like an Angel (in The Point of No Return comparison, in a video called March 6th ect...)
The best mirror i have heard. In my opinion the phantom's first line should scare the bejeezus out of you and I haven't heard better. Ramin comes a close second.
One of the many characteristics of a good phantom in my option is pulling off the psychotic side of the phantom without making the phantom completely homicidal and apathetic. This is why I love Hugh, he even brings a little comedy too (and he's still a bae at age 50). Ramin, Hugh, and Gary Mauer are my top three.
Okay, seriously, this had me sobbing my eyes out. Never has a Phantom ever touched me as much as this since Crawford. Hugh is absolutely brilliant. He does remind me A LOT of Crawford with how haunting and beautiful his voice is. My god, he's a damn genius with that voice and charisma. What makes me really sad is that I missed out on his run. The last time I ever saw the musical was when I was 9 and it was one of Crawford's last performances. It was amazing. After that, I was a stubborn child and didn't wanna see any other renditions of the Phantom. It was only tonight that I FINALLY decided to see who else has played the iconic role. I saw a few clips from the 25th Anniversary performance and was blown away. They're all amazing, but Hugh really stood out to me. I can't get over the fact that someone else has such a similar voice to Crawford's. Hugh's isn't as high pitched, but still quite beautiful, sad, and haunting, like it should be. I'm so smitten now.
Hugh is awesome!!!!! He’s tied for my second favorite behind my Ramin Michael tie. But he is definitely completely amazing!!!! He and John Cudia do NOT get the credit they deserve.
Izabelle Santos I'm so sad I'll probably never see him playing the Phantom... I traveled to England in 2017 to see 'The Phantom Of The Opera', the title role was played by Ben Lewis who was really fantastic ! You know... I kinda hoped, and I don't know why, it was magically going to be Hugh Panaro. But still... I cried when the Ouverture came : "That's it, I reached my dreams !" :)
Izabelle Santos So do I ! You live in the USA ? Does the Sweeney Tod musical play in the USA ? I wish I could see him live in this musical... WHY WAS I BORN IN FRANCE !? (sorry lol)
Izabelle Santos Do you think one day he's going to play in Brazil ? Or in France ? I wish he'll do that ! ;'( I hope one day you'll have the possibility to see The Phantom Of The Opera live.
I have seen Phantom over40 times going back to the 90's. Hugh Panaro was definitely the best - I left the theater in awe - yes - he was born fro this role.
Hugh was my first phantom and I've never actually seen a video of him until stumbling upon this one, and I just need to throw it out there that shit. Damn. Who gave him permission. Now I understand how he ruined me for life
What sets Hugh apart as one of the best, and why he played the roll for so long, is that he doesn't hold back like other Phantoms. This song is supposed to be extremely sexually charged, and he even gets almost to the point of nasty sometimes which means he is doing his job. Notice how he grabbed her breast to turn her around, and how he presses his pelvis towards her at the portcullis. Even in other videos he is spot on. Hence the directors love him. We all love his Phantom.
I always thought he was really into his character. But is it really supposed to be extremely sexually charged? Cause I loved how he added that in general. It gave off a different vibe no other phantom was able to surpass. And where did you read or hear that? I would love to do more research
yeah i don’t agree at all with the sexual thing i think he is supposed to not touch her to tease the audience (because we want it so bad), for me, the phantom respects Christine (at least her body) in a sense that he won’t touch her without marrying her or smth, he wants all of her and not just her body and i feel like he is even afraid to touch a woman because he never did that
First things first. Having seen seven different Phantoms from Kevin Gray to some German guy finishing up the Vegas run I am so very disappointed I never saw Hugh live. Hugh is by far the best man to ever play this role. John Cudia was fantastic as well. I love the energy of JOJ too. I have noticed that Hugh is completely sexual in this role and it is warranted. I have never noticed to boob turn and it surprises me because I feel he is sexually frustrated, but waiting for a green light from Christine. Best Phantom ever and just my two cents.
I love all the crazy smiles Hugh throws around in this video. Kinda creepy and yet oddly...endearing. Couple that with an excellent voice and you've got one of my favorite Phantom's ever! :)
Just commenting 5:50 for my favorite part. And Hugh Panaro is my #2 Phantom. Only alternative to Michael's style that I actually really like! Crawford is the "ghost", and ethereal. His voice is calming, more natural, more haunting. You can sense his weighted passion emanating out with bursts of intensity, and his voice itself seems to channel precisely what deep passions he's feeling, and it's as if his human side is simply the working vessel for his more unearthly mind. It doesn't sound "trained" like many others; this inspires a lot of my writing and I love it. Hugh on the other hand, also seems to channel the Phantom's sentiments more naturally - instead of acting the part, it's more as if he's *channeling* the part, and through his own preferred lenses; that of a talented schemer with grand plans and a slightly impatient, slightly, humorously condescending view of others. A spiritual trickster goblin, perhaps. He also doesn't seem too "trained", especially not in his acting. There's a natural fluidity that really seems to show what kind of "person" the Phantom is! And he does have the unearthly elements in some degrees - "for my music...my music..." and his PoNR performance - "our games of make believe are at an end..." seems to transcend humanity quite a bit.
I have spent hours comparing Crawford to Panaro, and the biggest difference between them is in the POWER of their voices. They are equally as passionate when playing the role of the Phantom but Panaro simply has better range and a more powerful far reaching voice- the only other male vocalist that can belt it out like Panaro can is Chris Cornell and that’s a super weird comparison because Cornell is in a completely different genre of music, but it’s the truth. I love them both but vocally speaking Panaro is superior. Character wise Crawford is the original phantom and I’m not sure anyone can ever beat him out.
8:38 Christine is *definitely* trying to kiss the Phantom there! You can see her close her eyes and purse her lips, ready and willing even *this* early on in the story to totally surrender herself to him.
That spring loaded mannequin popping out at me to grab me like that would make me faint too. Oh and Panaro's voice is very majestic and full of emotion.
If I'm not mistaken, this was taken from Hugh's (first) final performance, which is why Sandra Joseph appears so emotional at 10:40 and also why Hugh has to stop and take a moment at 12:06 before finishing Music of the Night.
When he says "Only then can you belong to me...." I am like "yes please I would like to belong to you!" :O This Phantom is the epitome of grace and attractiveness with a hint of mystery and sexiness ^_^ *Swoons dramatically* So I would faint but for a whole lot of different reasons ;)
It really surprises me that Hugh is like 50 yet he looks younger than that like around 30's. Love him so much, never got to see him though. I really want to watch his performance with Sierra Boggess but sadly there's no videos of it.
Heyy I have one rare video of full show with Hugh and Sie (though its quality not so good). If you want it, tell me and I'll send you the link to download. ;)
I really think that RUG needs to release a short highlights album for each time there are several cast changes. It could have 1- Think of Me 2- POTO 3-MOTN 4-AIAoY and 5- PONR. That way each Phantom is able to preserved with professional clarity. I mean I LOVE Michael Crawford and I think Karimloo and Wilkinson both are good in their own respects, but there's no reason after 30 years, we should only have three cast recordings in English, two of which are before 1990.
Fantastic share Opera Ghost what date was this performed, and can you also upload Point of No Return on here too please? Hugh Panaro is a phenomenal Phantom!!!
O fantasma mais sexy de todos. De 05:56 a 06:16 o Hugh quer nos matar mesmo. KKKKKKK OH homem gostoso!
Achei estranho porque ele sempre canta no tempo normal. Eu não sabia que era a última apresentação dele, antes de ele saber que seria chamado de novo. Tadinho do Hugh, estava emocionado. Deve passar um filme na cabeça. 😭
Exactamente. Pienso que el Phantom de Panaro es lo más misterioso y peligroso de todos. Eso es lo que busco en todos los Phantoms; hay muchas personas que lo interpretan bien el papel, pero nadie tiene lo que tiene Hugh.
well... that's... different... I feel like even his softest notes were being belted. I don't think I like that. I know he does an interpretation I like. this one is just... I don't know. very well sung but... oh well. can't win em all.
acting is too light, for him its all about the singing , no real power, great singer, and no chemistry between him and this Christine, i like my Phantoms to get kinda down and dirty and down right nasty, hugh isnt it, oh and boat must have broke that night or he had a bad back , as he should have put her in it lol
Really ( not judging your opinion, to each there own) but I think his acting is some of the best. He does get rather “down right nasty” for example, running his hand down his body and hips when christines singing or when he presses his pelvis towards her when he’s hanging on the portcullis. And I think the chemistry has something to do with the Christine as well, her singings lovely but for some reason I was never fond of her. Also Broadway phantoms never carry Christine to the boat because it’s considered a heath risk. They only place her in the boat on the west end.
The way Hugh caresses himself makes the title song and Music of the Night so much more intimate than I've ever seen. I love how fluid and graceful he is on stage - some Phantoms kind of stomp around and are so jerky with their movements.
Actually Michael Craford was the worst offender,he has always been naturally awkward and clumsy, many of his gestures were unintensionally funny.
@@amybaker4654 funny you say that, since Michael Crawford started out in comedy.

Hugh Panaro !! You are a God !!!
These two are exquisite! One of my favorite pairs!

Why do all the actors playing the Phantom have such a heavy amount of makeup on the uncovered side of their face? It just doesn't look right.
Michael Shipman Phantom (Erik) has to look very pale because he lives underground.

heavy makeup is supposed to enhance the actor’s features so they can be seen from far away

acting is too light, for him its all about the singing , no real power, great singer, and no chemistry between him and this Christine, i like my Phantoms to get kinda down and dirty and down right nasty, hugh isnt it, oh and boat must have broke that night or he had a bad back , as he should have put her in it lol
