“Underrated?” Are we still going on about that? Is there not a better adjective to describe music, musicians and bands than this worn out word? Please! For God’s sake! Do better. Come up with something more meaningful and original or just don’t comment. Thank you.
Some people saying how he is underated!? As someone who grew up listening to great music on the 80's, Joe Jackson was always considered to be a great musician even in the early 80's when steppin out came out.The problem is we live in a world now where mediocrity is overrated.
My problem with over/underrated is what does it matter? Anyone with some real grasp of music KNEW Joe was a terrific writer and performer. For those with no musical understanding, who cares!
Yep. It's those chords, they're bright and happy and at the same time slightly unsettling. Great song writing.... for what it's worth..... F#m 7 is optimistic the Bmaj9 is ambiguous, so you left unsure of the statement mid chorus Then the E at the end Is melancholy.
Glad you mentioned this. I find this feeling in a lot of his music. Perhaps also because what I was going through at the time that I really got into his music - it helped carry me during a very deep unrequited love of someone and mirrored my special joy and lonely aching when I was around her. The melancholy clearly there in the music and some words, the happy had associations of hope. To this day, for many years I've sort of avoided his music despite how much I love it, just because of the associated heartache. But it's been years and this popped up in my YT feed and I had to check it out. Just as expected - loved this song and this take, and it brought some tears. That's life. His music is about that personal life we all have, and can be surprisingly powerful tapping into those memories. That takes a special artist.

One of the best songs of the 80s. I heard it all the time on radio while I was rushing around between fulltime college classes and a fulltime job. Music kept me going. Thank you, Joe Jackson for creating a masterpiece of fun! Brilliant!
I agree. There is a real triumph and a melancholy to it. I have very fond memories of hearing this tune on the radio for the first time. And it’s stuck with me ever since.
@@CoffinPrick I found a lot of his music had that unique characteristic of melancholy and some happiness - some hope. It is indeed emotional, tapping into something deep.
I'm the guy, with the glasses, in the balcony trying to enjoy the show. It never fails I'm always flanked by at least one middle aged bopping bimbo. The only blessing this night they didn't allow beverages in the theater so I didn't have to deal with beer splashing about during their retreat to adolescence. One heck of a show otherwise.
Every song on 'Night & Day' is fantastic. One of the greatest albums ever recorded. Brilliant lyrics, arrangements, playing, recording and production. They don't make 'em like that anymore. I listened to it over and over and over again on my Walkman. Most of you young f***ers don't even know what that is, do you?

Saw him at a packed outdoor venue in Berkeley CA in about 1990. It was cold, drizzly and I was fighting a miserable cold, but that concert was THE most musical show I've ever seen. Fast forward to 2004. I took my son to see him at a small old theatre in Boulder CO on a frigid, icy night. We stood right in front of Joe about 10 feet back from the stage. He looked right at us several times and nodded, I knew that he knew I'm a keyboardist too. He was so cool, took his time, was spontaneous, and his audience is oen of the most appreciative of any artist. His tour bus was parked right in front of the theatre. As we exited and looked up at this huge vehicle we saw a sign in the window about 1/2 way back, "Bald guys never have a bad hair day." Great sense of humor. I enjoy the movie he scored too, "Tucker, The man and his Dream."
I wish i could remember, my guitarist buddy (who was a huge JJ fan and was excited to introduce his music to me) took me. All I remember was that it was outdoors, drizzly, cold and every seat was packed. Having seen him from like 20 feet away I don't think he's anywhere near that tall.
I had no idea it was 1982 as I thought it was 2024?! Un. Freaking. Real. His voice has not changed ONE iota. Simply stunned. One of the all-time most distinctive voices. Well done, Joe. Well done.

When my ex wife was trying to wear me down during our divorce, my great victory was her walking in on my beautiful then 7 yr old/ now 37 yr old beautiful daughter dancing round the kitchen to this. Love Joe.
Saw Joe Jackson in Toronto in 1982. He was a last minute replacement opening act for The Who. His performance was not well received by crowd. Sadly he walked off the stage after being pelted with a hot dog. I loved his music then and still do.
Back in the last century we the feral youth of London used to frequent Soho and the west end under the neon lights and often wound up after the tube trains had all gone to bed sneaking into the all night Scala cinema on Charlotte st. , on several occasions would see joe watching the flicks and being as we would creep in via the fire door and sequester ourselves into the empty seats available and on one occasion I ended up sitting behind Joe who is insanely tall , in the interim we asked him if he could sit lower in the seat 😅 lots of laughter ….nice to see him playing this memorable tune 🎶
This was one of my favorite songs off the album "Night And Day". Hard to believe it came out in 1982. It's doesn't sound outdated at all. Been a fan of his music for decades. He a underrated and exceptional musician. If you have any doubts, Listen to his "Body And Soul" album also.
Something about that song !!!!!! Did not matter how low it got through life, this song by Joe Jackson was always like a Godly drug - it would take me from the chasms of hell to the pinnacle where Shiva was always waiting.
