I've always hated the idea that you have to be a musician, filmmaker, or whatever brand of artist to make any sort of critique on anything involving those things. You don't have to be a painter to see the flaws in a noted work, and you don't have to have written a platinum selling album to know that Fear Inoculum is a goddamn disaster.
Lmaoooo I didn't even watch the video completely yet but I saw "Fear Inoculum is a goddamn disaster" and I laughed my ass off. I also want to add to this as well. I fucking HATE Fear Inoculum and I'm your average Tool fan. But recently I've started to play bass and I've been learning some music theory and songwriting and I gotta say having an understanding of basic music theory basically made me understand why Fear Inoculum is so garbage. My point is the knowledge of music isn't needed for an opinion but it can help you understand why you like/dislike a piece of music.
I feel the opposite way to be true, especially with music criticism. Anyway...youtube comments are more spontaneous with the ensuing 'cast. If yer still pissed enough to actually formulate an email of rage--probably should seek professional help.
I think what some people don't get a about your show is that above all else, you seem to want to separate the music from the myth/standing/echo chamber support. Popular isn't synonyms with good. You've encouraged me to ask whether a band is popular because they are good, or considered good, simply because they are popular. That alone makes your show worth every episode.
I agree with this, and it also injects that "person who has actually worked in the music industry" cynicism into the conversation as well. which i think is important for young people to hear, because it's a viewpoint that i dont think we hear enough, and it'll keep you from emotionally attaching yourself too much to artists until the day you find out they're all actually pieces of shit.
I read a magazine article about them a year or two ago. Sorry, I can't recall the name of the magazine now. The writer presented them as a couple of guys in the industry who are not trashing anyone for their taste in music, but are instead criticising fandom itself as something emotionally and mentally unhealthy. I mean, it's fine to appreciate an artist and look to music for inspiration, but when your own self identity becomes intertwined with someone who neither knows you nor actually gives a crap about you, then you have very serious problems. Knocking artists down a peg or two can help remind fans that this is just music they're listening to, and none of these artists are any better a human being than anyone else.
Great video! I'm glad to see you guys are back! You two should consider doing a separate channel/podcast called "Your Favorite Movie Sucks!" You would trigger a big hand full of people lol!

how can so many people not get it? the very joy of this podcast is going "YES! FUCK YEAH! THAT BAND SUCKS! THANK YOU!" during one episode and exclaiming - while clutching pearls, i assume - "omg that's sacrilegious, how dare you, good sirs! have you both taken complete leave of your senses?" during the next episode. that's the fun of it? i don't understand how so many people could be this lacking in both self-awareness and also sense of humour? i just don't understand. i get that music is the perfect button to push but how can people not be aware that we all have that button?
What I find funny about the podcast is no one seems to understand the irony of the show. Like, just because you like a band doesn't mean you're not aloud to be self aware. I love sublime and rhcp; I know they're not the greatest band and they have alot of hit and miss songs but I still love them nonetheless. I love the show for the history plus a diffrent side of the story that would've been blinded by my own bias. For example the metallica and Pantera episodes, did the video confuse Me? Absolutely, did I agree found it interesting? Obviously, but it still didn't change my mind about the music I love
But they just say VH is horrible in every way. We all have different tastes but somehow they worship Hendrix but despise VH...OK wow how cool and edgy and "ironic."
