The Toyota Fortuner is about to undergo a major transformation that might be a game-changer for the vehicle's future. Consider an SUV with a reputation for tough performance that has been enhanced with fuel-saving technologies to achieve even greater economy. The key query, though, is whether this idea will reach Australia.
Toyota South Africa unveiled the 48-volt mild hybrid Fortuner this week. This innovative vehicle combines a 2.8-liter four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine with an electric motor-generator and a 48-volt battery. When combined, these parts can increase fuel efficiency by up to 5%, which is a significant improvement for a big car. The catch is that although this technology is already on the road in South Africa, it is still unclear when it will arrive in Australia.
Toyota's well-liked HiLux ute in Australia is already equipped with this hybrid technology, and the 250-Series LandCruiser Prado soon follow. However, Toyota Australia has not yet stated if it would release this version of the Fortuner. The fact that Australia receives its Fortuner and HiLux models from Thailand, where the production line has not yet included the mild-hybrid technology into the Fortuner, is a significant contributing factor to the delay. Australian consumers are now left to wait to find out if and when this fuel-saving technology will be accessible.
In 2020, the Fortuner, which has been a part of Australia's automotive landscape since 2015, got a makeover and some technological enhancements. It's interesting to note that the Australian Fortuner has a different look than the South African counterpart, especially up front and back. Notwithstanding these differences, the performance of the new Fortuner 48V in South Africa is comparable to that of the HiLux V-Active in Australia. The same turbo-diesel engine, which generates 500 newton-meters of torque and 150 kilowatts of power, powers both. One significant distinction, though, is that the future LandCruiser Prado will have an eight-speed automatic transmission, which should further improve fuel efficiency, while the Fortuner and HiLux both employ six-speed automatic transmissions.
There is a price increase associated with the addition of mild-hybrid technology. The Fortuner 48V costs about 11,000 Rand extra, or about 900 dollars, in South Africa. In comparison to the HiLux V-Active's price rise in Australia, this is a larger increase.
Although the Fortuner is well-known throughout the world, it confronts fierce competition in Australia, where sales of the vehicle lag below those of competitors like the Ford Everest and even Toyota's own Prado. Fans of the Fortuner are left wondering if they will ever see this more efficient and environmentally friendly version on their roads because of the ambiguity surrounding the mild-hybrid variant's arrival in Australia.
