Okay WHAT is this guy, Soprano, Alto, Tenor or Bass!! He can cover anything!!!! I am waiting until they MAKE a new thing called the McGroove where it is all of the above, combined.
this is totally brilliant. The whistling, the harmonies, drums, bassline... the whole lot. It's spot on. Not only can you reproduce the songs accurately, you have a great ear for picking up all the fine details.
This is probably my favorite Smooth acapella. It sounds WAY better than the original and is quite soothing. I'm not even nostalgia blind with this one. I grew up in the N64 era.
Actually, that opening chord isn't that dissonant. When played out of context it is, but here it's rootless, as a 6th with a dominant 7th. All notes just inverted. ...music theory...
***** Dissonance, in the context of music, means that notes don't harmonize properly... in other words, there is a bit of tension or an "odd" sound that _usually_ resolves into a pleasant-sounding chord (which is consonance). This is usually due to notes being very close together in terms of pitch.
I know I'm really late, but you must not listen to music much. 1st off, this is not a very dissonant song. 2nd, there are many songs that make dissonance sound really good.
I keep telling myself this is the last video I'm watching then I'm getting off TH-cam...then I scroll down a little and WHAT DO YOU KNOW.. another game I used to play. I can't es ca pe.
Am I the only person who prefers the SNES Rainbow Road theme to the N64 theme? I mean the N64 one sounds good don't get me wrong but I like the feel of this one more.
The SNES Rainbow Road theme is one of the best songs in video game history. The N64 Rainbow Road theme is great, but nowhere near the level of greatness that this song is.
That was amazing, as always, man. I know that a lot of people hate Rainbow Road, because of it's difficulty (at least a lot of people I talk to), but Rainbow Road is actually my favourite track in practically every Mario Kart game that I've played.
I've always enjoyed that split right before the last curve, it kept reminding me of a really old-school racing game I had on my first PC, Broderbund's Stunts, which also had “highway” sections with a separator right down the middle in some tracks.
Damn you work so hard on your vids man, much appreciated for the hours of entertainment you've provided! Dragon Warrior themes have got to be my request for sure. Keep it up!!
This track deserves a 8 version more than the N64 version does. This is the only version that's balls to the wall hard if you don't know how to drift like a banshee on it.
I clicked on an "in reply to..." link and of course New TH-cam opened a new tab, which meant I was listening to 2 time-delayed copies of the recording. I was like "I never knew either Mario soundtracks or human voices could be this sophisticated"
This is beyond awesome! This theme has been on my mind since the very first time I heard it, more than 22 years ago. Your take is so well done, actually gives me goosebumps. Congratulations!!
Jahbari Matthews "there is no DLC dafuq Nintendo doesn't do that" Fire Emblem Awakening, Smash Bros 3DS/Wii U, Mario Kart 8, New Super Mario Bros 2, Animal Crossing: New Leaf, New Super Mario Bros U, Pikmin 3, Tomodachi Life and Hyrule Warriors all have DLC. Where 'dafuq' have you been?
+Meme Supreme Yeah, the recording is too perfect for it to all be done in one take all the way through the song. He probably edits out his inhaling/exhaling after recording each track.
dude what? No, of course it's live audio. he records himself with the audio of each track and splices them together. that's the only editing he really does, there's no lip syncing or voice pitching in his videos. Max has actual "perfect pitch", and has trained his voice (and his drum skills) since he was a kid. for a man in his thirties, a couple of decades of practice at his passion, and some genetic lottery, does lead to skill of this caliber.
From his twitch channel and "smooth mcgames" channel. He says all this himself at one point or another. I don't know for sure if it applies to every single recording he's made, but for the majority, yeah.
Zero words after watching, or rather, listening to this video -- not even 3 seconds in, I was closing my eyes and enjoying the music. How on earth did you train your voice to be able to cover that many octaves?? To make matters "worse", you are pitch perfect... And of course, the editing/mixing etc is right there to render that voice... That voice! Congratulations. You have a sincere admirer.
I can feel you on that. A lot of times I remember percussive intricacies from where the song is in the melody... But it seems like you prolly need the drums to help keep tempo.
Actually, he uses a program to break down each separate track, then replicates the sound, then possibly lip sinks it to the footage extremely well, given that he sometimes is far away from the mic, which he wouldn't do when recording. So what he does first may depend on the song.
I remember when I was a teenager, I played this level in trial mode to the point where I could run the whole 5 laps without taking my finger off the gas and not die! I definitely couldn't do that now! ❤❤❤
I don't care what anyone says, I'm realy good at Rainbow Road and it's my favorite track. (The trick is to know when to let off the gas and when to brake at corners)
i was letting youtube do the coming up next thing without watching and i was enjoying this until i finally looked at the screen and was amazed to see it was a human making these noises!!! great job! you had me fooled!
I actually watch your face to see if I can pick out which of the frames are singing the highs and lows.... it makes me laugh because I realize I end up harmonizing and I sound horrible compared to you!!
Okay, can we all agree that his whistling doesn't even sound like whistling at all, yet it sounds like it's straight from the Kirby 64/Zelda soundfont? O_O (It may not sound like it for some vids like this one, though)
Fantastic work as always, master McGroove! One of the funniest things to do here is to play the video at 1.25x the normal speed... It reminds me of racing like hell after the beginning of the third - and final - lap... ;)
I recently got the SNES Classic and have been falling back in love w/ Super Mario Kart after a 20 year (or so) break. I have to say, you're quite good -- I can't even finish Rainbow Road once without falling off.
Smooth McGroove, I like everything about you! Your username, your hair, your beard, your voice, your glorious pixellated sword, your hat, and your cat! Keep up the good work :-)
this guy deserve every single one of his subscribers
@Pizza Master you beat me to saying that he deserves more... by 3 months... to a comment from 3 years ago... what am I doing with my life?
Yeah and waaayyyy more!
and then some
You need a medal. Two, actually. One for the beard and one for the acapella.
Lol and the cat two lol
Im pretty sure that beard stretches for infinity, like a male version of repunzel.
Jesus is in disguise.
3 for that cat :)
Where was the cat?
literally crying. those chord progressions melted me
mee too!
the opening is a G13(sus4) - G13 vamp amd then the main chord progression is a I - II/I - bIII/I - IV/I, absolutely crazy
@@XENOGOD C13(sus4) - C13 vamp*
Lmao
@@XENOGOD yeah I can’t believe he can hit those!
Okay WHAT is this guy, Soprano, Alto, Tenor or Bass!! He can cover anything!!!! I am waiting until they MAKE a new thing called the McGroove where it is all of the above, combined.
Gotta be a baritone. No other way he'd cover the entire male vocal range. Not like this.
but what about his dang female highs
Nick Glinski really good falsetto
Don't forget about percussion! This guy is a beast!
Johnny Clocks That or a Tenor. True tenors can hit insane notes in both ranges.
I love searching for the box with his cat.
No
You should come back and tell us how it went!
I HAVE COME BACK
It has been 9 years and I still come back to hear this version
2023 YEAH !🏎️🌈🍄🍄🍄
2023 and still groovin to this 🌈
2024 in 4 months 🌈 :D
this is totally brilliant. The whistling, the harmonies, drums, bassline... the whole lot. It's spot on. Not only can you reproduce the songs accurately, you have a great ear for picking up all the fine details.
almost like perfect pitch. . .
cat8752 One could say the Pitch was Perfect...
This is probably my favorite Smooth acapella. It sounds WAY better than the original and is quite soothing. I'm not even nostalgia blind with this one. I grew up in the N64 era.
Hands down _the best_ Rainbow Road theme.
No way n64 rainbow road is better!
One of the few songs in history that can make dissonance sound good.
The song is just composed so well, you barely notice how dissonant it really is! haha
Actually, that opening chord isn't that dissonant. When played out of context it is, but here it's rootless, as a 6th with a dominant 7th. All notes just inverted.

Smiling is a word.
Also, if Smooth McGroove's covers don't hit you in the feels, you're doing it wrong.
I'm amazed with that flawless Rainbow Road run in the middle. No amount of song could outdo that tremendous feat.
Lyrics:
Ba Ba Ba Ba Ba Ba ba Ba Ba Ba Ba Ba Ba Ba Ba Ba Ba Ba Ba Ba Ba Ba Ba Ba Ba Ba Ba Ba Ba Ba Ba repeat this for 54 times
thanks :D

your not alone mate
The SNES Rainbow Road theme is one of the best songs in video game history. The N64 Rainbow Road theme is great, but nowhere near the level of greatness that this song is.
Thanks for agreeing :) glad to know I'm not alone on this.
HECK YEAH YOU ARE!!!!
R.J. Hekimian I am definitely outnumbered but I'm not alone :)
Dude, your vocal range is insane! And this is one of my favorite videos of yours, along with your various Zelda covers. Awesome work!

This is executed very well. The glissandos, vibrato & timbres are spot-on.
A+++, 10/10, would do business again, etc.
0:44 God damn. What on Earth. Where is this man? We need him back LOL!
Still listening in 2020! Bring those tunes back!!!!!!
I just love how much jazz-funk there is in video game music
I always loved that distortion feel at 1:40
my favorite song from super mario kart
I like the back the the future hat ;)
Great Scott!
Hi doge
omg its doge!!! I've been beat you in agar.io
Much future

Gotta love the Marty McFly Junior hat.
I love how you can hardly tell that it's all vocal! It's amazing!
Not my first time watching this video, but this is my first time noticing just how GOOD that driver is in the video. That's some good racing.
Isn't it weird that this is actually better? :D
Y'see, back in my day we didn't have rails... we had to drift around every single corner if we wanted to get in first.
power slide for the win
Don't know if you know, but I'm pretty sure this does have a remake on MK7 for the 3DS.
TrueEpicnessGaming
It does
TrueEpicnessGaming And the Remake has *NO* rails. They must've gone to alot to do this.
love how after ten years this is still among the greatest covers of this song!
dam. i remember playing this as a kid....i feel so old and i'm only 22 XD
i know what you mean, good to hear classics
Shadowe Jey
it brings back memories that's for sure. :D

that's great, except i don't own a Wii. XP
i'm right behind you I'll be 20 this year :P
I'm 27 and I played the hell out of this when I was a little kid
You know, I just realized that Smooth kinda looks like VSauce Michael without glasses and with long hair and an epic beard.
I always thought he looked like Ashton Kutcher mated with ZZ Top and had a baby and Smooth McGroove was born
I clicked on an "in reply to..." link and of course New TH-cam opened a new tab, which meant I was listening to 2 time-delayed copies of the recording. I was like "I never knew either Mario soundtracks or human voices could be this sophisticated"
THE EARTH NEEDED THIS MAN.
Somehow this one is better than the original rainbow road song o_O
Nice!
What the heck? I can't even get my voice that high! This guy has talent.
its the whistling that helps it get high this dude got talent
It's his beautiful mix of whistling and singing that makes his music so gosh darn good!
Plus he blends with his own voice so amazingly XD
Smooth McGroove is a legend! 🥰
AHHHH. Words can not describe how awesome this is.
this is my go-to smooth mcgvroove track :)
lol.. the cat is so funny at 2:00 :D
I had no idea there was a mario kart before MK64
There's 2 of them; Super Mario Kart (SNES) and Mario Kart Super Circuit (GBA).
***** Oh. Well what do you know?
Kind of a dumb comment as all the newer ones list what gen the tracks came from in the retro cups...
LeviathanRX It would be a dumb comment if the last mario kart i played wasn't mk64 14 years ago.
*facepalm*
Is that Marty's cap from Back to the Future II?
Yes, and it's fashionable now, according to the prophecy that is Back to the Future.... still waiting on the hoverboards
MrKinglevaan It's weird how the movie featured flying cars, and people are only freaking out about the hoverboards. XD
***** Hoverboards are way better than flying cars
MrKinglevaan Suit yourself!
*Flies away in a flying car, leaving you with a puny hoverboard*
pretty soon we can get both. they actually have a flying car!

SNES Rainbow Road is coming to Mario Kart 8 in the DLC pack!
there's is no DLC dafuq Nintendo doesn't do that. And its already on there.
Vasco Neto Nintendo doesnt have dlc ive never saw it on there
Jahbari Matthews
"there is no DLC dafuq Nintendo doesn't do that" Fire Emblem Awakening, Smash Bros 3DS/Wii U, Mario Kart 8, New Super Mario Bros 2, Animal Crossing: New Leaf, New Super Mario Bros U, Pikmin 3, Tomodachi Life and Hyrule Warriors all have DLC. Where 'dafuq' have you been?
There is no remastered version of the Theme, they are using Smooth Acapella
._________________________________________. ok im sorry jeez
It is said that a falling star is a player driving off the Rainbow Road course :D
LOL!!!!!
The image of Mario & Co. burning upon entering the atmosphere is comedic gold.
Just a rant, my personal dream team is you, Smooth, doing the mid to high voices, and Daichi (daichi beatboxer) doing the low and percussion...
Another wonderful smoothe mcgroove remix indeed... three thumbs up
Why he didn't was invited to make some tracks in the Super Mario Bros Movie???
He was overqualified
Playing Mario Kart 7 while listening to this! helps a lot to win the race! ^^
Dude it looked like you never even inhaled during the entire song. Do you ever run out of breath?
He must practice a lot to control his breath and inhale at same time.
+Yopyop Wait, what? You're right. It looks impossible.. Sounds impossible, too. ..Does anyone have an answer?
+Meme Supreme Yeah, the recording is too perfect for it to all be done in one take all the way through the song. He probably edits out his inhaling/exhaling after recording each track.

Rainbow Road 64!
Wii is the best rainbow road song
munsi0121 nope, the best music is, for now, the one of rainbow road 64 in mario kart 8
Yes,Filo Pedani, which is further proof that Rainbow Road 64 is the best Rainbow Road theme, since they remixed it for Mario Kart 8. I rest my case.
ITS MADE!
Huh, i actually revisited this video after hearing the 64 version because i think this one is better. :P
As great as this sounds...I would really hate to be living next door while you were recording this.
I would KILL to live next door to this guy.

I can with bowser 150cc at that.

How do you do it Smooth McGroove?
Melody first?
He bought a cloning machine because he got bored and cloned him and his cat and he had the idea to do acapella! XD (Joke)
I can feel you on that. A lot of times I remember percussive intricacies from where the song is in the melody... But it seems like you prolly need the drums to help keep tempo.

The MK7 version of this is lovely.
PLEASE! You goota do the Double Dash version, PLEASE! For your beard's sake!! Do it!
At like 0:16 it sounds like you added more bass to the song.
I don't care what anyone says, I'm realy good at Rainbow Road and it's my favorite track. (The trick is to know when to let off the gas and when to brake at corners)
Japanese Brony do u play mk7?
+Dexos I don't know them by their numbers but that's the one that came free with a new 3DS, right? If so, yes. Love it
Thats very nice to know.
Japanese Brony I just drift
You can actually finish the whole track without ever braking and letting the gas off (if we are talking about the SNES version).
I dare someone to turn this guy into a Sound font
+havoc master Google is your best friend.
We need all of the other Rainbow Roads now. :P
My favorite track of all time
My favorite mario kart theme of all time
The best remix i seen from far
This guy makes me feel less homicidal about Rainbow Road.
You Using Autotune? Or is You're Voice THAT Beautiful?
you need to do an Acapella but for the MK64 :D
Jaja ya lo había visto, esta perro el cuate
This theme always gave me chills, it was so eerie and mystical. This same feeling came over me in your version. Love it.
Anyone have a link to that hat he's wearing? I need it.
me too
It's a hat from Back to the Future 2. Look up Back to the Future hat and you'll find it
+Tony BearJug I got it from the official BTTF site and they had it in their merch store. It reflects light better in the sun.
Please Smooth, do the N64 version. I know most people want to hear it.
Dude yes, that's what I was saying, the N64 version is my favorite rainbow road song to date
You've never done the original Super Mario Brothers!
I'm right back there playing this with my friend in his family-room in 1992 but in technocolour now with this treatment. Amazing!
Hell's Anthem.
I don't think I've ever cursed more at a video game than SMK Rainbow Road. Lakitu basically carries me to the finish line every time.

9 and 11 chords... The best chords.

by definition yeah but humans are funny creatures, sometimes we like dissonance sometimes we hate it.
