Hey everyone! We wanted to share this preview from our good friend Yeva so you can see more of BYOK in action. The device in this video is actually one of our earliest prototypes, but we’ll be posting more updates soon with the next round of prototypes. Stay tuned! :)

Will it be compatible with 2byte unicode characters? e.g., Japanese, Chinese, Korean, etc.

As a traveling novelist this looks awesome. What's the lag like? I tried the old Astrohaus products (like the Freewrite) and the lag drove me nuts. Cool size though!

It’s an LCD display which means essentially no lag. Especially compared to e-ink. That was our main reason for choosing LCD. That, and the backlight implementation is much easier :)

I am eagerly anticipating the arrival of my device. I wanted to inquire if there will be an option to choose between left-handed and right-handed controls. As someone with a disability that affects one arm, I appreciate that the current configuration may work well for me. However, I also consider that individuals who can only use their left hand might find the buttons located on the back of the right side challenging, and simply turning the device upside down may not solve the issue. I just thought I would share this perspective.

Great question! We won’t really be able to adjust the position of the controls on the BYOK itself once it is fixed but it will be possible to also control the BYOK with your keyboard arrow keys as well, giving you some flexibility outside of the fixed controls. Hope this helps!

Thanks! The color grading and distant viewing angles may be on purpose since it's an early prototype but next videos would be great with a more standard review/overview camera setup. It was difficult to actually see any bit of the product.

Sure! We’ll be happy to make it more standard angles in future videos. Our choice of angles is not meant to hide anything but rather to avoid misrepresenting the cosmetic details. The 3D printed enclosure doesn’t represent the final look of the product and people may be confused by a rougher look that is not actually going to affect the final product which will be created in a factory with high quality plastic and a steel mold.

Darn, this would have been a lot cooler with e-ink. I'd purchase it instantly. There have been huge advances in latency:

We love e-ink! It just wasn’t quite in line with our current vision. We want BYOK to be a convenient and snappy experience from the moment you hit the power button. We also want it to be reasonably priced and e-ink has a tendency to drive up cost. Right now, we’re focusing on a crisp and fast LCD although e-ink is not out of the question for future products.

I think so too, but I don't think I can really expect really anyone to develop a dedicated E-ink typing device for the next few years because even if the technology's advanced quite a bit in terms of latency/delay, it's probably gonna be cost-prohibitive enough to source manufacturers who have E-ink displays of that quality, let alone put it into production and maintain it for customers in the long-run.
Tbf I would prefer it to be E-ink too but I get why it isn't feasible as a non-big company coming in, especially since it's a writing machine and not a reading one.
