  • @RamadaArtist

    I'm a huge fan of Kotobukiya, and I have a lot of their Frame Arms kits, which are basically the "all grown up" (and therefor sometimes dysfunctional) precursor to the 30MM kits that Bandai makes now, (for real, Frame Arms are pretty much lego kits in terms of cross-compatibility, but the complexity of options you can get to is just staggering compared to what is out for 30MM right now... it's just that the fit and finish of a lot of the Frame Arms kits you can find is often lacking compared to Gunpla kits, and they tend to need a lot more attention to get to a stable build.)
    However, far and away their best kits are the Armored Core (especially Gen 4 and 5, though, to be fair, I haven't actually got my hands on any Gen 3 AC kits, so I can't say for sure... but the ones I do have, like Aaliyah Suplice, just absolute crush it in terms of detail... they look like real life military model kits... more so than even a Bandai RG,) offerings and the Metal Gear kits. Metal Gear Sahelanthropus is easily one of the most impressive kits on my shelf, making even the MG Sinanju Stein look more like a toy in comparison. This also holds true for the Yoji Shinkawa Frame Arms kits, (which are effectively "off-brand" Metal Gears,) i.e. White Tiger, and Shadow Tiger.

    • @redcog1083
      @redcog1083 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'd agree with this. I got into Frame Arms first because 30MM wasn't out yet and there is amazing built in customization and provide a lot of suggestions to build off of... but it takes effort. A lot of the parts just look like random things and pieces of misshapen plastic and could literally be any part of a mech.
      Not exactly the best thing to jump right into as a beginner, like me, but great potential opportunity if you creative and have experience.
      Thankfully, not too long after I started doing models 30MM came out and it's way more my pace, but I've still got plans for some of my Frame Arms Kits, 30mm are just so easy and satisfying and that's why started following this channel.
      I'd love to see some videos on Frame Arms kits on this channel, but I think there are only videos on Gourai... which is basically the most boring Frames Arms Girl, haha.

    • @RamadaArtist
      @RamadaArtist 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@redcog1083 I seem to recall he did at least one review of a proper Frame Arms kit sometime back in the day? I don't really even remember how I got into them, but it was probably circuitously through drooling at AC and Metal Gear kits, before I committed to putting up the dough for some of those on resale.
      It's definitely quite a mess of plastic, as you've mentioned, and it gets a lot worse if you decide to dip into the M.S.G. line, (which, hilariously, stands for Modeling Support Goods, and not Mobile Suit Gundam, but I can't believe that the identical acronym wasn't intentional,) which I've probably bought a dozen or so packs of, but honestly do not know what I'm going to do with them yet. (This is an inherited issue from my background as a fine artist... I have no problem spending well over a grand on art supplies that are just going to sit around in my studio for years until I decide I want them for a project... some people might think of that as hording, I prefer to imagine it as pre-emptive preparation, and I've pulled random shit out of storage a half-decade after the fact enough times to convince myself I'm in the right.)
      I do really like what you *can* do with the kits though... even with bog-standard Gunpla, I have a tendency to convert the legs to reverse-joint wherever possible, (engineering is in my blood, and I look at bipeds and go, "every single one of them other than humans is 'chicken legged' because they're all birds, and mechs don't even *need* hands, so why are so many mechs humanoid? IT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE!!!!") and the Frame Arms kits really let me play with possibilities in a way that Gunpla doesn't really offer, even with the 30MM kits, so I put up with slogging though generic plastic bits in order to custom build my ideal creations. (Again, as an artist, this makes more sense to me than it should for most people... I look at random bits of plastic in my recycling and think, "I could probably make something out of that.")

  • @andrewcarter9649
    @andrewcarter9649 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Never tried the Hexa Gear line before, they seem pretty interesting. Best model kit I've ever built is the HMM Zoids Gojalus, it's just an absolute PG sized monster and 10 years later it's still rock solid on my shelf. Worst kit was a Five Star Stories Junchoon from Wave, but that was an old kit from the early 90's, more recently the FFS V-Siren Prominence from Volks was a bit of a nightmare to build.

  • @EdwinPohan
    @EdwinPohan 2 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    In the keyboard world, ABS is not really preferred because it shines due to finger oil and grease after a while. I guess it’s not a problem for model kits unless you touch it for hours a day.

    I absolutely heart the Bulkarms. They do give the vibe of being your typical high tech corporate security mechs that protagonists or antagonist mechs will blow up in a cool CG video game intro like you'd find in say Armored Core. Also do hope you get a chance to review the Loud Gale - that's an awesome addition to the Bulkarm variants.

    I have two hexagear kits, the White Governor which always makes me want to cry whenever I have to handle him, and the Agnirage, which is a BEAST of a kit. Although it falls on the "bestial" side of the kits Mecha mentioned, that kit is awesome. I was a bit reticent about getting any more hexas because of the governor, but after this video I will give them another try.

    I recently purchased 4 Hexagear kits: 3 Bulkarms (Lumberjack, Glanz and Loudgale), and one Quetzal governor. I wanted to order more governors at first, but after getting the Quetzal I decided not to, for the same reason you stated. Everytime I try to pose this one (it's kinda top-heavy), I'm guaranteed to pull out a piece. And I didn't want to glue those because they're supposed to remain modular :(
    But I'm very satisfied with the Bulkarms. I've only recently got into kit building, maybe I'll get one of the "expansion" sets in the future.

  • @stevefu8970
    @stevefu8970 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    That’s so funny! I just took advantage of HLJ’s discount to pick up a couple of extra Bulkarms because of how much I loved the red Glanz (I regret not getting a second one, since it has since doubled in price) and the Jungle type Alpha. I really REALLY wish the governors had painted faces, and while I agree that they aren’t the greatest (and are extremely overpriced for what you get), it’s the medium sized kits that almost made me pass on the larger ones. I plan on opening up the Loudgale next. So much fun! Just wish there was more color separation.

    1:10 That voice is in my head too but it wants HGUC kits specifically.
    I've only got 74 of the 241 retail HGUC kits left to get. That's less than a third of them.
    Problem is that i keep spending money on non HGUC stuff like HG Gunpla from other lines, MGs, SDs, stuff that isn't even Gunpla or stupid snack food that i keep impulse buying.
    I got paid today and i'm pretty sure it's unfortunately not going towards any HGUC kit...
    EDIT: Yep, £76 just went to buying that Bulk Arms with the big sword...
    I had wanted to buy SH Figuarts Birth and his weapon pack but NOOO~!
