This is interesting. I actually attend an all girls High School and it's going to be awkward telling people that when I'm older and have transitioned. Thinking about it now, depending on whether I want to go stealth or not I may just lie. Also, this video made me realise that I didn't have a very wide perception of male identity either. Eye opening! Thanks!
@jaffacakesareyummy9 yeah, i never had any intention of going stealth but now that i see what its like to pass 95% of the time i think i will have to pick and choose based on each situation if i can be out or not. i think i do need to have a "backup" school in mind for those situations. it just isn't important for everybody to know 100% of my history. -- glad this made you think about your perception of male identity too! its a pretty huge realization for me!
@Hundkoppel hey! yeah, i totally understand that. i am still the same person but now that my presentation is so different there are new challenges and things to work through. -- that's rad that your concept of male has broadened too. i don't know what my problem was! i guess we all figure things out in our own time. -- good to hear from you!
Nice to see a video form you again. Personally I am a little sad that I relate less to you since you went on t but that is purely my ego speaking. =) But my concept of male has definitely broadened too. To the point that I feel fine identifying as male sometimes (I´m genderfluid) without thinking that I must want or feel certain things in order to do so.
@videokidsam Thanks, I live in my car so I don't have access to computer and I enjoy your videos. I've always been confused about gender and since I'm older than you, I didn't know about terms like transgender and genderqueer until I was already an adult. Gender and sexuality were lumped together, and I wasn't gay, so I just had the word tomboy to use, and that's not really used for adults. Of course most ppl still don't understand those terms.
Funny to hear you speak about this, as I have gone through similar evolution of feeling about a male identity. I have become pretty comfortable with a male + genderqueer identity precisely for the same reasons you are stating yet I am not on T... I've accepted maleness as so broadly defined that even I can belong there lol. I am going to think of ways around the Smith college thing... hmm... tricky.
@Primalxbeast yeah, you're right. there isn't a grown-up version of the word tomboy... tomman? -- it definitely was a long time before i learned the difference between sex, gender and sexuality. -- i know. if we could all just be open all the time just imagine the support and clarity!
@Primalxbeast yeah i usually block my vids on mobile devices, just like how i block them from being embedded on other pages, for security reasons. and i let it upload overnight and changed the settings when i got up. -- but you know, now that i think about it, maybe mobile devices is okay...
@tobyr3 thanks, vern! -- yeah smith is a tricky one... i feel like if folks have heard of it then they will also know that it is definitely not co-ed. it just kind of sucks because i am really proud that i went there but it is not necessary to be 100% transparent to everybody. ugh!
Perhaps you could say that Smith sometimes enrolls guys, or male identified folks now if they ask why you were there. Good luck with your name change process. Love your perspectives on these issues.
@Primalxbeast i know, when it comes to kids the trickiness factor goes exponential. i would hope in an ideal world i could be out 100% of the time, but i know that isn't realistic in the current world. the job was just for one month, so its over which is nice! yeah its about picking and choosing when it feels acceptable or appropriate.
@tunafluff hey stranger!! ya know, i think what you said is kind of brilliant. that's such a good point that i wouldn't have to deal with the so-and-so question. i guess i'm just so proud of smith that it makes me sad to hide it, but in those circumstances i would be hiding a whole lot more about myself too, so it shouldn't be a big deal. -- i was researching boston schools and thought it might be fun to say i got my BFA in film from emerson. ha! -- ps- HOW ARE YOU??? :)
@alexhaney100 hey good to hear from you! that's cool that we've thought about it in similar ways. go you for getting to that point long before i did! you're so evolved! :) :)
@videokidsam It's honestly only because I have a really awesome trans community that is a constant source of knowledge and inspiration, with so many diverse representations of trans identity.
It's a bit confusing being transgender when you're younger and don't understand that gender and sexuality aren't always linked. When I was a kid, I just thought girls liked stupid stuff because that's what they were taught to like. Of course now I know that gender is determined by nature, not nurture. It's a real shame that people that aren't straight or of binary gender can't be open about it around kids, it would really help kids who are confused about why they don't fit in.
Nice to see you again. People are REALLY bigoted and uncomfortable about people who don't fit binary gender, especially when it's somebody around their children. I'd suggest not being out with anybody who knows where you work and might talk to parents if you want to keep your job, but be out with other people if you're in a mood that you can deal with disapproval. I have no clue what you can do about the female school issue.
It's great to see you on here again :)
This video has made me feel a little better about a few things so thank you for that.
Hope your well.

Yay name change! And all of the other stuff you talked about is SUPER interesting but I don't have the energy to respond. Miss you Sam.

Weird, I watched this video this morning on my phone, but now it says, not available on mobile. Oh well, at least I got to watch it.
