Your adventures both external and internal have always been enjoyable and interesting. As a senior citizen, I can say that use your youth for exploration and taking chances. It is the best way to find out how you want to live the rest of your life. As you said - you have plenty of time...mistakes and wrong paths are as important to one's identity as success and joy are. My late father always told me, "proceed as the way opens." I hope that works for you as it did for me.

Agreed. Making mistakes it's a learning experience and there's so much time to recover if you're under 40.

You are infinitely watchable. You keep my attention no matter if you are camping or hiking or talking about books or cooking or just conversing. You are a great videographer too. I hope you keep making videos and bringing us along. You are good at this.

It is so cool that you're ready to come back around here! I went full-time in a camper van last November because I finally could. I had a career for nearly 43 years (never intended to do the thing that long but it was fun and I kept learning new stuff) and I was starting to lose my enthusiasm, and didn't wanna just live for the greenbacks, so I did the paperwork, ended that thing, and moved in. It's a mixture of the external adventuring I never got to do when I was going from hi-school to college, like my buddies got to, a celebration of having raised up my 3 kids and returning to be on my own for the first time in a very long time, and simply adventuring while I'm still healthy and young enough to get out here and do it to it!! Love your videos and miss your 2nd channel, welcome back (again...forgive me please) and thanks for STILL inspiring me to do and think more! ❤

I'm 57 now, and I'm investigation this for when I retire at 62. I really think I could enjoy this, and for the reason you just mentioned. I want to try traveling the US while I still can and can still enjoy it. I'm in relatively good health so it seems like a good time to do this. I've watched a ton of positive vanlife videos, so for the next month or so I'm going to be watching the ones that highlight the downsides. Hopefully learn from others since I have time before I start.

I quit van life before I started van life. After 5 years of research, planning, and saving, one day I realized that I needed a home base. I couldn’t live in my car without option. I switched gear and bought a place. Covid stopped all my travel. I am still not in travel mood but was talked into my first cruise ship vacation in Autumn. My suv is ready to car camp but needs to wait until bugs die and temp cooled.

The reason “why” is because you wanted to…simple. I love watching people find themselves and share it with the public. To me it’s very simple, you do what makes you feel good, what feels good at the moment, and what feels good possible for the future. I’m looking forward to watching what you’re willing to share with us. Whether you are making this journey in a van, boat, or camper-car. It makes no difference to me. It’s your journey that captivates me/us.

Anna you are such a good story teller, you have a lovely voice and quiet way of talking about things, I once lived in a van along time ago now, no matter what people decide to do van life can be great or bad, like you said it's about why you want to live van life, these days with so expensive rents and housing costs a lot of people don't have a choice 😢, if you are happy it's great, go travel experience new things, life goes by very fast, be kind to others and do good where ever you can , I think your poptop car is great, it ticks a lot of boxes, safe travels enjoy whatever you do, be happy ❤

Love it ! This didn't match the way my brain thought it would go based on the title. I was prepared to share my experience, strength and hope with you. But, obviously, that's not necessary. You are wise beyond your years, Anna. I'm so happy for you. You already know your life journey will give you the chance to be and do many, many versions of Anna. The trap many fall into is believing what it is they do IS their identity ( I've done it many times myself ) And then end up scrambling when that identity is taken from them. One phrase which comes to mind is the difference between a Human Doing vs a Human Being. Bless you, Anna. Always look forward to your videos. Take care of you !

Beautifully said ! Everyone has their personal journey. I love that saying " wherever you go , there you will be" 😄. I down sized from a fully kitted out campervan to an SUV, I felt like I was dragging a fridge, oven and kitchen sink up and down the hills. Like a turtle with a shell that was too big. I think if you can manage living in the small space you get a glimps of the freedom that opens up. Possessions can become like anchors to a ship. I love being minimalist as it enables me to go further into nature. Wishing you all the best in the next chapter of your adventure 💖

Anna, this is hands down the best “why I quit vanlife” that I’ve seen. So many kudos.
I fall into that first category you described. It’s in the cards someday for me to try it, but life keeps happening and all of those events are important. We are renting a storyteller overland van for eclipse weekend next year and I couldn’t be more stoked. I am bringing my daughter!!

Your approach not only is beyond commendable, it could change the lives of others. There is NO mistaking you for anyone else. You were meant to be you and you demonstrate that so well. May you discover as many of the treasures inside you as possible. Life is often so darn difficult and painful but if faced as you have contains boundless beautiful insights and grace. Thank you so so much for sharing this. Craig

After your trip with Mariah she posted that she was taking a break due to security issues. I’m glad to see you are back because I was concerned about you both, and Finn. So glad to see you are well. As much as I enjoy watching vanlife travelogues, I do recognize how mentally challenging it is to constantly be on the move. I’ve driven cross country numerous times and I don’t get out of my car unless the conditions are exactly right. So I get what you had to deal with all the time. You are a very smart young woman and I enjoy your vids. Please give Mariah my best. I hope she’s well too.

Work will leading to early retirement... and fork is van life is the USA or just moving to somewhere like Thailand and selling everything except for a backpack.
Every video you give us is a little gift. Congrats on your new path. It maybe be permanent or it maybe temporary, but I guess the important part is you are still moving forward. Best.

I've been restoring my car for the past few years and I probably wouldn't have been able to afford or justify it were it not for those covid checks, at least anywhere near as extensive a restoration as it's been. I've had it for over 30 years, it's a nice car, a performance car, an enthusiast car, and I originally bought it shortly after I left a job I didn't like to travel across the country and finally see it properly.
I didn't actually live in it as it was too small for that, and basically camped, stayed in cheap motels and where possible with friends or family, but I lived out of it for over two months and it was basically my home during that whole time. I had a great time and am so glad that I did it, but throughout it I kept having these doubts about what I was doing that made me question the whole thing.
Basically, the idea was to go on this big adventure and see parts of the country that I'd been wanting to see for years, but mostly to see the country, period, as previously I'd been to a few places on both coasts but nowhere in-between. E.g. all those big name national parks and monuments, Las Vegas, the great plains, the prairie, the Rocky Mountains, the Pacific Coast Highway, and so on.
And that was exactly what I did. But I just couldn't shake off this feeling that I was somehow "faking" it, meaning, faking going on a real adventure, where you took risks, didn't know from day to day what you were going to do or where you were going to go, and really lived the nomad life.
Instead I planned everything out, bought a ton of high-end camping and hiking equipment, stayed in nice campgrounds and chain motels, ate either commercial camping food or fast food, went to all the obvious and predictable places, and had a "safe" adventure, which is no adventure at all.
I eventually resolved this by deciding that what I was doing was just fine, so long as I was honest with myself about it and not pretending to be some true explorer, and didn't try to stretch it out beyond a few months. If I did, then yeah, I'd be pretending to be someone I wasn't, probably to avoid going back to "real" life. And I'm not that guy.
I like to explore, more than most people I know, but I'm no explorer. I like stability, predictability and my creature comforts, and what I was doing was seeing the country and nothing more. Which was perfectly fine for what it was, but not a true adventure. Everyone should see the country at some point, but there's a huge difference between that and being a latter day John Wesley Powell.
Once I did this, I made peace with my pseudo-adventure and thought nothing more of it, and am so glad to this day that I went on it. I went beyond my comfort zone to fulfill a lifelong dream, but only to the extent that I was willing to go and no further, because that wouldn't have been me. In the end we all have to be true to ourselves and what our gut tells us, or else what's the point?

So well said. I especially like your first part, where you differentiate that there are different types of van dwellers. I built my Promaster campervan in 2018 and love being a part-time van dweller. I like the freedom, the adventure, and the nature of van dwelling. However, I also have a home to return to. There is often a romanticized view of something which is different from the real view of the same thing. I have always felt sorry for van life content creators who have to create interesting (or not-so-interesting) content multiple times a week. The freedom van life gives is negated by constant filming, editing, and storytelling. There are seasons to any story. What I liked to do when I was 20 differs from what I like as a retired person. Growth is about accepting those changes. Good luck with your new adventure.

I love your measured, thoughtful videos. Seems to me you simply focus on putting one foot in front of the other knowing where you hope to get to. Your intention and agency are superb.
And serendipitously enough, for me: I'm making changes to focus on 'refreshed' goals, and happened across the wonderful JC's Hero... book yesterday. I reflected and remembered his impact on me at a different time.
And then you mention him in this vid... 😊
I firmly believe we have our own path but also believe that we are conduits for life 'forces'. We all benefit from connecting.
    Thank you Anna 🙏

This has been a thing since the sixties if not earlier. Any hippy can tell you their van experiences while they traveled to see Burning Man or Woodstock and the tradition continues to this day, just now it’s about the Gram following.

Thanks for sharing! I just enjoy you and your storytelling! If you keep making videos, I will definitely keep watching! Glad you did the thing, and now, finding new adventures. Vanlife always looks so fun from the well edited videos I see on TH-cam. It's still something I'd like to do, but I imagine doing it for a year or two, to see the country, and/or to have some kind of a camping rig for weekends and longer trips. Anyway, thank you for your videos and channel. I hope you're well. Hope you're enjoying adventures with Mango, school, and work, and friends, and all the other adventures unfolding.

You don't need to explain your choices - your life is right there in your name. You're just "uncharted" & going with the flow. So what's next? I enjoy your videos - full of introspection. Stay free Anna. 😎👍

That makes sense! It was hard for me to give up van life but this newest adventure of living full-time in a foreign country is just as exciting but in a different way. 42 countries, 6 advanced degrees, and the journey continues for this soul.

Thanks for being you. Whether in a ‘brick n mortar’ a ‘van’ a ‘car’ or ‘tent’ it’s all about what you want. Life changes, as does how we feel about things we do. It’s all about the perception that people have, and unfortunately ‘brick n mortar’ people and many organisations look unfavourably on those who choose a different lifestyle. Good for you on your journey and may these changes fulfill your dreams now, and may you continue to dream and grow.

I make TH-cam videos in a similar spirit as you and currently am doing road life with my two cats (also in it for the process) -- Seriously would love to sit down with (maybe several) cups of coffee to talk to you more about this - it is SUCH a thing (so may layers, like an onion!). It's so understandable that you needed to take the time you did (hope you're not beating yourself up about that) to process and come up with a response. There is sooo many things that I want to say but the main thing is: your true audience is here for YOU and not *just* the lifestyle you lead. Reinvent yourself a million times. The real sticks. Keep going! Supporting you from afar 💛💛💛

My hubby and I chose a van to live and travel in part time. We love traveling and bringing our dog along, and I hate staying in hotels, specially those that allow pets. I just like having my own space, my own bed, toilet, tiny kitchen, and most of all, the freedom to come and go as we please.
I’m looking forward to following you on more of your adventures, whatever they may be 💜

I relate to the desire for a hero/heroine's journey so much! And the idea of your desire for the next adventure pointing you in the right direction to learn something new about yourself or the world or both. I've been struggling with what to do next in life (van life, international travel etc) and feels constantly pulled multiple directions at once. I think we get so stuck on making the "right" choice but at the end of the day we can live life in seasons and if a choice you made isn't working out for you anymore we can make new choices and enter a new season. I'm excited to see where this next chapter takes you Anna - thanks for sharing!

I like that you incorporated the hero’s journey. I think the vanlife trend, even as a TH-cam phenomenon, is popular because the hero’s journey is such a powerful force and for many people vanlife represents a transition period that is both full of danger and mystery but also freedom and adventure and it is filled with enchantment and new friends. Great observation

I recently found your channel, and I’ve enjoyed a number of your videos. Thanks for sharing your perspective on this topic. I’ve been playing around with the idea of building out a van. But I’m realizing that a more seasonal smaller camping vehicle similar to your Element is much more fitting to my current lifestyle. So it’s helping me think through my options. Anyway, great video! 🙂
