The reason the generator stopped working is because pistons can only move 12 blocks

There is actually a cobblestone version of the basalt bridge so you can make a cobblestone generator.
I built it and i got over a stack of cobblestone after it was done.

What happens with the basalt generator is that the piston is trying to push 13 blocks, which isn’t possible. Pistons can push max of 12 blocks.
