      Re-containering for aesthetics is bullshit and wasteful and I wasn't aware people are out there doing that. All the re-containering that happened in my life so far was due to food moths 😢 once you have them you can only seal everything airtight

I work full time with additional responsibilities outside of work. He's right if it's for functionality, great but no ones sees your frig.

    Lol I saw the mushrooms one coming 😂 I had them in my wedding and I’ve fallen for some of the the cottage-core style home design concepts. I died when you compared this trend to the chicken/farm home decor of the 90’s but it’s too late for me, I’m too far gone, I’m gonna be keeping my mushrooms 😂 🍄 ❤

      And there's definitely a way to be cute and tasteful about it. I dunno... I think mushrooms are the next owl or fox motif vs farmhouse chicken. Like, if you love it, you're gonna love it for a long time.... if you think its cute and charming, you might add a couple pieces here and there. I actually think a mushroom themed powder room would be hilarious. They make mushroom shaped bar soap. LoL

      I went to a baby shower in the mid 2010's that had a Harry Potter theme, and there were owls hiding EVERYWHERE. Peering around corners, looking in through the windows, any solid surface that would accommodate a faux owl. I truly do not know how the host managed to collect so many freaking owl statues, but I'm even more curious about what she did with them after the party...

    The Tupperware 2.0 thing is crazy. Putting food from a sterile into a non-sterile container, putting food with freshness liners (cereal, eg) into unlined containers so it will go staler faster, and adding to the amount of dish washing instead of keeping the original container and then rinsing and recycling. Unless you wash your dishes in your own personal autoclave, your repackaged food will spoil faster leading to expensive food waste, and we're supposed to be cutting down on that I think.

    • @RachaelTheRed
      @RachaelTheRed 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +42

      I think it depends on how your brain works as to whether or not it increases food waste. My husband and I both have ADHD and we are much more likely to actually go through our food if we recontainer it so we can actually see it. Sometimes all the colors in the original packaging can be over stimulating. It's SO much easier to find what I'm looking for when everything is in clear packaging. Also, it means we can buy smaller quantities and I can replenish more frequently because I can actually see how much we have. For us recontainering has actually cut down our food waste quite dramatically.

      I know one woman who repackaged everything because she said it cut down on moths. She'd freeze her boxed goods and then repackage them and recycle the boxes. Something about eggs in the packaging or something. It worked for her. Eh. A couple moth traps and we're good. I live in the countryish. Bugs happen. Just stay out of my food.

    I totally agree with you about the wavy checkered board carpet. Recently, I stayed in a "cozy" hotel in Paris, the room used a small contrasting navy and white - a diamond within a square patterns carpeting. When I stood up in the room, looking down on my phone reading and replying to text messages, I suddenly felt lightheaded. I thought I was just tired from travelling. When it happened again, then I realized it was the carpeting that made me feel sick.

    The containers for things that already come in containers makes me crazy too! Who has the time for that?!? Also, you probably buy milk/juice/cereal/flour before you're completely out of the previous amount and you can't just dump the fresh on top of the old or the whole thing will spoil or be stale. Then you have the new one in its original packaging stored somewhere until you finish the old. I'm convinced no one actually lives this way and people only do it for social media! WIth stuff like cereal or flour it actually makes sense to store it in a plastic container because sometimes that bag of flour or cereal that you bought will come with some little moths eggs and soon you'll see some baby moths flying around your kitchen. If you keep your flour/cereal in a glass or plastic container they will be contained and you can easily see if your food is infested or not. I know that most viewers come from northern America where maybe food moths aren't as widespread as they are here in Europe but u kno what keep ur eyes open.

My bio grandparents divorced and they still separately went full chicken theme for their kitchens (grandma went for spring chicks and eggs, grandpa went full roosters). Every time I see one of those “decanting beverages into aesthetically pleasing containers” videos it bugs me because often the amount of juice etc. that fits in the beautiful glass container isn’t as much liquid as what the original store bought one holds. So I imagine that the person is either also putting the plastic jug in the fridge with a couple of inches of juice or they are chucking it? 😂

      the clear cartons they all use are 1 litre (so 33 smth or other fluid ounces) so they're either filling two cartons, making a mix of the dregs, or more likely they have a second "unaesthetic" fridge.
      my beef with them is that once u open a bottle/carton of juice they go bad quicker than if u left them sealed. noone needs to be opening 3-6 1-2l cartons of juice at once...

    I agree with everything with this video! I do have to say though that decanting does have a time and place. I don't go over the top with it, but decanting most of the packaged foods in my pantry helps save a ton of space in my tiny pantry. I can take 3-5 boxes worth of food and put it in a MUCH smaller space because the boxes are filled with empty space. So taking grab and go snacks for the kids like various granola bars out of the box and into a small container saves on space because I can stack several of those containers. I leave drinks in their original container in the fridge, but things like vegetables I like to put in bins to keep them from rolling all over the place. It helps with an ADHD mind and helps save on space in smaller homes.

      I think I sort of disagree with him on that one. maybe it does look juvenile but I have a colourful house with many "juvenile" colourful storage items on display. I think what makes a space "timeless" is when you design with a personal aesthetic rather than a trending aesthetic. Grey is a timeless neutral but those all grey homes look just as dated as a mushroom home (even worse because they have no soul). So if you personally are a cottage core girl and you can your own veggies and always buy natural fibres then your home won't ever look dated. Everyone who visits my space always says it looks so colourful and cute and they love it because I buy everything in colours. Theres a difference between personally having a nature vibe or having a colourful vibe vs. buying everything in pink mushrooms because you are currently obsessed with pink.

But, otherwise, this is “perfect, perfect, perfect” for those who want to spend their money wisely and buying classic items and those permanent items (flooring, tile, backsplashes, cabinets, appliances) for long term and changing the towels, pillow covers, curtains area rugs, etc when one wants a change of color or to be a little current with the trends.

    1:30 with this also: I get putting things in containers to save space, but when you transfer items to another container you don’t have the expiration date on it (unless you write it on). Which means that unless you’re consuming that product way before it expires anyway, you run the risk of food poisoning. But then you replace that item often so it isn’t really worth transferring the product across. Also, those containers won’t get cleaned as often as they should… causing the build up of bacteria and then you can get food poisoning. ALSO, the only organisation that is crucial to maintaining a fridge is just what goes on each shelf to prevent cross contamination; cooked meats above raw, raw on bottom shelf, any “non cook” food above raw and cooked food, liquids in the draws and no opened bottles on its side.

And thank you for acknowledging that we may have to have some of these other listed things in our home if we have girls of a certain age, there are more of these than I want to admit in my home but are largely confined to my kids’ rooms. Well, it’s not in the main floor, and if you’re nosing around upstairs, we better be close friends and you better be cool about it 😂

    Ok. I want a checkerboard pattern carpet for Halloween! Not everyday living because it messes too much with my eyes, but a door mat for Halloween? Perfect!
    My sister in law is into the mushroom thing. As someone who is very fantasy oriented, I have encouraged her. Lol I see them and imagine fairies underneath the mushroom demanding their dues.

    Damn, came at me like an attack dog! 😵 I totally hear you though. I have a lot of decor from my urban outfitter obsessed (college) days that fit into these categories. It is juvenile. It is fun. I will certainly grow out of it at some point. Right now I’m feeding into my inner child that didn’t get to have fun happy decor. I have my whole life to have a put together, boring house sooo right now I’m gonna live in pastel squiggle paradise! 😝

    I absolutely love almost all of these trends, but can definitely agree that you have to be very intentional with how and where you use them in your space. I really love colour and squiggly shapes and furniture that feels unique and fun. I can tell based on your space that we don't have the same interior design style, but I still love your videos and hearing the opinions of someone with a more toned down aesthetic than me is important in making my space feel comfortable to guests as well as myself.

    OMG, in the late 70's, my mother painted the kitchen cabinets a dark chocolate brown and decoupaged clusters of three to five mushrooms in the center of each cabinet 🤣🤣🤣

    I love my colourful crates because when it’s where I put things that I run out of or have overstocked. Then I can fold them and they take up a minimal footprint when not in use. I also don’t use them as active decor, but as I don’t mind the look I use them as catch all containers that encourage me to put the things in them away to their proper spot so I can fold them back up. As they are useful to me I’ll keep loving them.

    I've watched several of your other videos but what made me finally subscribe today was your commentary on containers for things that already come in containers. THANK YOU! It drives me crazy to see so many home organization and design influencers advise everyone to "decant" all their groceries. What a pointless waste of time.

    Containers for open bags/ boxes of cereal, crackers and cookies= yes, they will stay fresher and all fit on the shelf.
    The refrigerator stuff is downright hilarious to me

      naturally, there is some stuff that makes sense to repackage/just toss the packaging, and there is some stuff that really doesn't make sense. repackaging sweets, cookies, chocolate spread is actually smart to do psychologically. quite often our brain get cravings triggered bc we see the packaging and associate it with yummy stuff. The chocolate spread has never lasted as long in my house as when I took it out of its colourful container and put it into an air sealed glass jar.

      I'm guessing people doing this never read the storage instructions on the package they throw out. That packaging was hermtically sealed. Most juices have weeks to best before date, but 3 days after opening. Repackaging destroys the shelf life of the product.

    I didn’t know this channel, but I couldn’t agree with this video more. I am 27 and I think most of the stuff is somehow cute, but very „urban outfitters“ . The items pretend to be super funky and individual but actually they aren’t. But i like the playfulness!

  • @caedengoering
    @caedengoering 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    100% agree with all point made on recontainering, but I don’t agree with all of the clips. Definitely not necessary to pour your liquids out of their bottles, but recontainering fruit is very functional - especially when you use those green containers that keep them for longer. The egg thing can be cool as long as it has a lid. Being able to stack on top of eggs is a huge boost to space. But I 100% agree with pouring your drinks into containers and such. That seems really extra and completely unnecessary. 😂

    Funny thing about packaging. I bought a new backpack, and after I made my purchase, the clerk asked me if I wanted a shopping bag to put it in. ha ha. This was at the University store. (This was way back when stores still had plastic shopping bags)

      I used to work at The Container Store and I wouldn’t offer bags in some cases…like when someone bought a small trash can. If they asked for a bag, I would make the joke “How funny that you’re carrying this trash can in a bag, and then the bag will go in the trash can!” I know in some cases they actually did need the bag for a reason I wasn’t aware of, but maybe it made someone think the next time, and I did have some fun with that. You have to when you’re ringing up the same stuff for 5 hours…😊

    Lol I just bought those crates, but they're literally just a cute storage option for me, they're hidden away out of sight and I like that they fold down when I'm not using them. They're great for storage, but not cute for decor. Wicker/etc simply takes up too much space.

    I have a photo of a basket centerpiece from the 70s that my mom gave my sister. it sat on the shelf in her laundry room for 22 yrs. 22 years of undisturbed dust is very interesting.
    It was a rustic style basket made out of wood filled with various mushrooms. idk what we did with it, I'm sure someone would buy it now, lol. It was very well made and cleaned up real nice.
