Hello from Down Under, if you enjoyed the Bin 28 and Grange us one of your favourites, you should definitely try Penfolds St. Henri which is brilliant! Another Shiraz, can handle long term cellaring but it's a kickass wine. Normally around $100 so much cheaper than Grange. We have some great wines down here and wine lovers in the USA should get on it, don't know what you are missing out on. If you choose a aussie wine, Just make sure it doesn't have a kangaroo on the label haha. 😉 Cheers! 🍷
THANK YOU!!! I am so so happy to hear you are enjoying the videos - I am definitely going to continue, I am in this for the long haul! I truly love doing this, and the more I do it, the more I love it. Thank you for watching and please let me know if theres anything you want more of!
Nice video as always! Wish it was St.Henri instead of bin 28. Would be interesting to compare those two, both large barrels with almost no new oak. I feel little bit unfair for bin 28 :D
thanks! Totally valid and that definitely would have been an interesting comparison between the two. I really wanted 2 wines on the opposite side of the spectrum for this tasting, but the St. Henri would have been a good call. Bin 28 faired really well, i actually even went back to both today - 2 days later and the Penfolds was standing strong while the allemand had gone to an undrinkable place. The brett was really intense in the wine, I normally love Allemand and I try not to make a competition out of it when I taste like this, but the Penfolds kicked some serious ass.
I’m loving your videos! Thanks so much for all the great content. My wife and I are headed from North Carolina to Napa for our first trip out there in a few weeks (mid-January). We both love BIG syrahs and we seem to be on an endless journey to find the world’s best $30-50 bottle of syrah. Any advice to where we should be visiting in Napa if this is one of our goals while we are there?
The Bin 28 is a dream of a wine. If it were a French wine, it would cost twice as much. This is really big cinema. Full-bodied, fruity, berry and perfectly balanced acidity with well-integrated tannins in play together with a long, velvety and fruity / dry finish. The relatively light dry barrique note completes the entire taste experience. Top quality, very clear. Shiraz the extra class with a lot of character and structure! Good Video :-)
Hello! Been watching your videos all week and enjoy them quite a lot. I do have an odd question for you though. Your foil removal throws me off a bit (I love classic service but non pretentious). Do you have a reason for spinning the bottle rather than facing it and handling your knife differently? I would assume it's just a comfort thing, but curious non the less. Keep up the great work!
Sathorael first of all thank you so much for watching! It’s a good question, esp bc I’m not consistent in how i do it. I definitely abide by the classics rules for service on the floor at Press, where I keep the label facing out and adjust my knife to remove the foil. But this way is a little faster and sometimes cleaner and easier for me. When I’m in a rush and need to open a bottle quickly that’s my MO!
Grange is most definitely a shiraz wine, not cab. It does sometimes have a tiny cab component, no more than a couple of percent. Penfold's best cab-shiraz blend is undoubtedly Bin 389, known as Baby Grange in the trade.
South Australian.... you guys always! Choose penfolds. Good wine but we have way better! And we have multiple regions here as well that produce different flavours due to different altitudes
Great video!! Definitely trying to get more into Shiraz or Syrah haha. I’ve heard a lot of good things about penfolds from my friends down under espically the grange range 😱 Btw love those glasses. Curious are you wearing the Garett Leight milwood or Hampton?
Thanks! Love all types of Shiraz/Syrah - they can really vary. These glasses are actually Oliver People's not Garrett Leight (those are the pink/nude ones, sorry for the confusion!). I got the OP's a few years ago and I'm honestly not sure if they make those specific ones anymore but they have similar updated versions. I'm waiting with baited breath for the Mr. Leight line which should be debuting soon - not sure if you've heard about it but it's a collab between the father (OP) and the son :)
Couple of years ago I was here at the beginning of my wine journey. Now I can't sleep because I found, and bought a reasonable prices bottle of Allemand Reynard 2016. lol... I'm still a student.. but playing for the Santa Claus has never felt this good. RIP food for the next month.
Great comparison, but I must add that an Aussie producer- Clarendon Hills calls their wines "Syrah". I find them to be more Rhone-like and not as jammy as many Shiraz bottlings can be. Thanks again!
Interesting! 😏
Haha yes very! Looking at your name, I have to ask - are you part of the Allemand Cornas family?!
Yeah, I'm actually his son. You've made a great video. Thank you!
Allemand Théo I thought that might be the case! That’s so awesome! Def one of the cooler comments I’ve received :) thank you VERY much!

new to wine and not able to identify the flavours , any tip?
Hey sommvivant, I absolutely love syrah. It is one of my favorite grapes. Can you tell me where I can buy Thierry Allemand Cornas wine?
I am truly enjoying your honest reviews and I feel that your authenticity is coming through so powerfully. Please continue with the videos.

Wow, you look stunning with those glasses. Next time I go wine shopping, I will try pick up some Shiraz and try it. Thank you.
Thank you! I have to tell you, that Penfolds shiraz even 2 days later was still stunning. Definitely a keeper.

Interesting, maybe the Chaillots is going under a closed stage, I guess... I will definitely get another bottle of bin 28 sometime, sounds amazing!
"Beat the shit outta my mouth, right now?" .... You have me rolling on the floor! LOL Love the professional honesty.
lol wine will do that to you. for real though, sucker punch.
LMAO! You are a kick in the pants, Amanda!

I had to pour myself a glass of wine while watching this... haha you got me craving it just by talking about flavors you were tasting.
NICE!!! So...what did you pour?! And please tell me you had something to eat with whatever it was?!
lol it was a Merlot and I don't remember from where. naw i didnt eat food with it. usually i like to just drink wine without food :)
good, how can I contact you to do the tasting together?
Ripe. Sweet, pretty, and elegant and that's just Amanda! Keep them coming. Travel Channel/food Network is watching. 😘
haha!!! more always on the way!!! Happy just to be on youtube with you watching - but hey, if Travel channel is out there too thats great!
Guessing again... Can I go with you to New Zealand? There's not only good wine there but very nice trout/fly fishing.

I love how after all the head movement her hair does not move .
Great video editing and quality!
twitterfan thank you!!
I doubt “Gaelic”comes into play 🤔 seeing as how Ireland has zero to do with wine

SOMMVIVANT ohhhh wow that’s interesting!! I didn’t hear about it but I’ll be sure to check it out! Thanks for the recommendation

Oh for sure! There are always exceptions.
Quite a few Aus vineyards will use syrah as a statement of style, ie. made to a more Rhone valley style.
Love you're vid/editing. Tell Jerusha I say Hi!
David Corpuz I definitely will! Do you know her? Norbert Adamko is doing all of my video editing now so he gets the credit in that dept
Yes! I know her, we hung out when she was living in Berkeley
oh awesome!! I will see her tomorrow so I will make sure to tell her hello!
I fell in love with Malbec. 🍷#malbecnerds #malbec
yaaas shiraaaz
I’m 10 years old and my name is syrah that’s my real name.
Great wine but you open the bottle like a novice.
Also not sure how you can get any nose with the glass full AF
