I use them for SEAD purposes, because they're cheap and long range, you fly ahead of your strike aircraft to trigger the air defences. For example you send 2-3 UAV to Indonesia there ahead of your jets, they are 2-3 targets on their own or 4-6 targets if you launch missiles as well, effectively suppressing enemy air defences/ triggering their cooldowns moments before the actual strike planes arrive. Like you said, it depends on your strategy, I know I'd rather replace a few UAV than replace a few strike fighters though.. Cheap and effective. Or if you know they don't have any air defences, I also enjoy using them to deliver chemical cruise missiles. If you can afford the morale cost of doing so, you can cripple someone's economy rendering their cities unusable for 24-36hrs depending on the severity of your attacks lol.
The slow speed is not always a bad thing. they will still show units under them as they get to their destination. here you were scouting a coastal city, but if you where scouting deeper inland, knowing what else is in your way can be helpful. considering how cheap they are at L1, you might want to build several, and then upgrade them so you dont have to train the more expensive model. What do you have against recon armor? it gets airlift at L1, gets air assault at L3, and shows stealth ground troops. They dont replace the MBT, but they are cheap and easy to use, and deal decent damage. you can build them on day 1, and only need 30 minutes to unlock L1. Better than the AFV...

the drones are so fun they get so much hate but i really like then they are so underated and level 6 drones are so fun
