there used to be a commercial available track cleaner pad ("T" shaped) which attatched to the front of your slot car. AJ's, I think.

Great test! Very clear what each method does. Question: after polishing with Autosol, how long did it take to become tarnished again and requiring another polishing?
Isn't Scalextric nickel-plated and not stainless? If so, I'd be careful with too much of an abrasive treatment.

I use 3M red scrubby pads for the rails, works great. Then clean the entire track with spray 409. Spray the paper towels first, then rub...

409 cleaning solution seems a US product. Do you know of any other solutions which may be better available in the UK?

Thanks for the Autosol recommendation! I've been cleaning track that I bought on ebay with some track cleaning rubbers, and the Autosol is brilliant for that last bit of cleaning, and makes the cars slide over the rails super smoothly.
