  • THE AI EDUCATOR: TESTING CHATGPT'S EFFECTIVENESS AGAINST TRADITIONAL PROGRAMMING COURSE MATERIALS

    This study investigates the efficacy of AI-driven instruction through ChatGPT in teaching Python programming compared to traditional learning materials. The experiment involved eight groups of students across four different classes, with each class randomly divided into two cohorts. One cohort from each class utilized ChatGPT, trained on prompt engineering, as their sole learning tool, while the other cohort was provided with expertly crafted traditional course materials covering core programming concepts such as variables, operations, conditions, loops, data structures, functions, program decomposition, and data visualization. The course lasted for one semester, comprising weekly two-hour sessions. Instruction was minimal, with teachers present only to clarify questions, ensuring that learning outcomes were primarily driven by the materials or ChatGPT. Student performance was assessed through regular programming tests and a final project, with the AI assisted groups not allowed to use ChatGPT during assessments. Results indicated that both cohorts encountered similar challenges, yet the groups using ChatGPT generally performed slightly better than those using traditional materials. This finding suggests that AI can effectively supplement, and potentially substitute for, traditional teaching methods, especially in scenarios lacking formally trained educators. The implications of this research underscore the potential of AI as a transformative tool in educational settings, warranting further exploration into its role across diverse learning environments.
