Thank you so much for these kind messages. Editing this little film was a bittersweet experience, doing it on my own. I missed Peter and found myself wishing that we could have finished the story together, but also I reflected on the fun we had, and am so thankful that we had the opportunity to play trains and make films together over a number of years.
Sirrliv describes the films as making you feel 'safe', which is very pleasing because from the start we set out to make films which would transport the viewer back to a quieter, simpler time (even if it never actually existed). There is a wonderful poem by Siegfried Sassoon, 'A Local Train of Thought', written in 1940, which sums up my feelings about our stories. It ends:
"There's peacetime in that train." One hears it disappear
With needless warning whistle and rail-resounding wheels.
"That train's quite like an old familiar friend," one feels.
So, no more laying on the grass and propping the camera up on bits of wood or bricks, no more struggling with a smoke machine to get the squirt in the right direction at the right time, Cyril's arm falling off, or with shots which turn out to have a full washing line in the background! I'll miss it all hugely...
...And so will Cyril and Daisy who now stand together on the shelf of my dresser at home, with Daisy still wondering when Cyril is going to propose to her. After all, they've been courting for over twenty years!
    Paul

      My belated condolences.
These are charming films and fulfil something much needed these days and do exactly as you've stated (on the tin).
I'm a modeller of 7mm so called 'modern image', yet the romantic in me, really appreciates these period pieces (made with loving kindness from what I can see)✌️👍😊💜

I need more short films of the railway again they are so heart warming.
I will rlly miss Cyril and Daisy and the journey's they take.
I love This Video and A Winter's Mail I like them bc they remind me of just going out and just have an adventure. I like A Winter's Mail bc when the train arrives in Stafford I love the sound of The church Bells, i miss them because before lockdown I would usually hear them all the time
Hopefully you can make more Cyril and Daisy videos again or Other Railway short films in the Future.
    Love you work xx

I love the 'Cyril and Daisy' films. Utterly charming, beautifully filmed, each one left a smile on my face.
My thoughts are with Peter's family and friends. If his films are anything to go by, he must have been a truly special person.

I've been following these clips for years now, and they've always been so charming and comforting. Something about the way you film these tinplate trains in the garden set to realistic sound effects, with the tin and porcelain figures to add life to the scenes. It makes me feel... I dunno, safe in a way, like a reminder that there is still some good in this world. Like the visual equivalent of a mother's hug, if that's not getting too silly or sappy. I'm sad to hear this project will never be completed, but I do understand. Gods rest ye, Peter, and thank you for leaving us these precious memories.

With the rather Dickensian first sequence (shades of The Signalman), these beautiful little fragments are the Duck End equivalent of The Mystery of Edwin Drood! Thank you, Peter and Paul, for these superbly atmospheric productions - I've recently been able to introduce them to a railway-minded friend, who hadn't come across them before.

So sad to hear of Peters passing and to the final curtain call for Cyril and Daisy. I have had the pleasure of looking at their adventures from the beginning. The realism in these productions is so great that you quickly forget that this is a garden railway with tinplate trains. Hopefully the series will be available on TH-cam for generations to come; a lasting legacy of Peters genius for all to enjoy.

    Peter's wife, Liz, has written:
'Wow, thank you all so much for your heartfelt messages. Peter and I had been married for 50 years and the ones he spent plotting and planning the little films were some of his happiest. The laughter from the editing room was a joy to behold especially when they discovered an inquisitive frog had hopped in to ruin a shot. He loved everything that took him back to a gentler age and thankfully he died suddenly in his beloved garden.
I am so grateful to Paul for putting this tribute up and have asked if he could link in to this site the full length stop frame animation film they made before Cyril and Daisy started courting called Juniper Junction which took 2 years to make.
Thank you all. We will miss Cyril and Daisy's antics and Peter.'

Your wonderful videos have influenced the direction my raised garden railway is taking to more of a vintage gauge one feel both in trains, buildings, people. Just wish the trains were easier to find in the states. The struggles of a yank smitten with tinplate trains from the UK in both gauge 1 and 0.

Thank you for the very kind messages. It's so good to know that our films brought pleasure to people. As you can imagine, I have missed Peter hugely over the year, although I don't know how much we could have done during the pandemic. We had a great routine which was a true collaboration. We would meet up through the winter months and think up stories over tea and cake, or a beer. Lot's of ideas were bandied about, but the right one always emerged eventually. They had to be quirky, relatable with figures who couldn't move, and have potential for fun with the trains. During the spring the sets were built, and by the middle of April the first tentative bits of film were being shot. Through the summer months we usually worked one or two days a week filming, and edited as we went. Final editing and sound effects were added in the late summer and then we were ready to publish.
The real fun was in working together. We shared a sense of humour and a love of the 'quietly' absurd. Sometimes it was hard work; in particular, 'A Winter's Mail' involved filming late into the night with lights, and manipulating trains, smoke and snow machines at the same time. It was always good fun though, and often hilarious. When Peter died I did consider finishing the last film but I knew in my heart that working without my 'partner in crime' just wouldn't be the same. I'm hugely proud of our little films which we were always pleased to share freely with anyone who wanted to see them.

    • @paulrhodes897
      @paulrhodes897 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I'm glad you like our films. For the scenes involving figures, we filmed in two scales. On platforms the figures are a mixture of antique lead models or more contemporary ones in Gauge 1. Most of the figures you see in these films, in the signal box for instance, are actually larger than Scale 1. They were heavily adapted by Peter from different sources by building them up with resin and plaster. He was very talented at this.
