  • In this archival episode of Land & Sea from 1990, we look at the winter fishery off the Southwest Coast of Newfoundland. Draggers and/or trawlers dominate the fishery, taking large catches and destroying the sea bed. The hook-and-line fishermen were left with nothing to catch and were facing hard times.

I come from a family of commercial fisherman and I get pissed hearing about the willfully dumping of small fish just to get more out of the quota for the big fish. They should have lost the quota....... But ironically they all lost it when they shut down the cod fishery.
The worst part is that it wasn't all their fault,we need to get rid of the huge factory ships that aren't sustainable and don't optimize the resources. We're able to sell and use every part of the fish and nothing should be discarded anymore. Even the guts and scraps have value for fish feed and the more we use the waste for things like this the less anchovies will be used for it and the better off the ocean will be.

The only people I blame is the so called scientists in the fisheries department poor management . Here in Australia we have had the same but here we were not allowed to be flexible and move areas and fish types , me I had my licence revoked for not fishing to give the fishery a chance to revive , and the ones that killed a fishery were allowed to keep there licence
