  • You know times are getting tough when even affording your pets has become unaffordable. Official estimates say owning a dog cost about $1400 per year but real world accounts show its more than double that to roughly about $3000 per year when you factor in everything your dog truly needs. Yet another sign of the economy is doing great...

The medical equipment, supplies and medications cost the same as stuff intended for humans. I used to be a vet tech and I've seen the receipts for the clinic supplies. It costs a small fortune to set up a veterinary hospital and vets don't make the same kind of paychecks that human-care doctors make. That's probably why fewer people are going into veterinary medicine.

One main reason people can't afford pets anymore is due to the massive greed of vets. Their charges have gone through the roof, it costs an average of $200 and up to have a cat spayed, which is absolutely ridiculous. It's also a huge reason there is such an overpopulation of cats. I have pets now, but I worry about retirement, possibly forced early retirement in the next few years. Will I be able to afford to take care of myself, let alone worry about an older pet getting sick.

2 weeks ago, I was reading an article about the same topic. The author mentioned how someone abandoned a puppy who ended up at his front door. Fortunately he found a home for the dog in less than 24 hours.
The VERY NEXT DAY, I found an abandoned kitten crying for food and water under my neighbor's truck. I immediately brought the cat in, and gave him a bath cuz he was covered in all sorts of parasites.
I spent the next 24 hours trying to find him a home. I have enough pets and my wife is pregnant so there was no space in my house. Luckily I found a retired lady who could take him in. Her family and her kids love the cat.

Both rescues because their previous owners couldn’t find housing that would allow pets. Doggo will be 6 in July. Cat will be 5 in August. We want to keep them as long as possible, until it’s their time. But statistically, they’ll be crossing the bridge right around the time our last human kid turns 18. After that. No more. My husband & I will be selling our property & moving into a camper. When we had the human kids & got the fur kids. Things were good. Many people do just fine with a pet. Don't be so harsh, save it for those that deserve your wrath and give someone who is lonely a break, It is sad that it happens yes, but some pets lose their people and need help so are you doing anything about it from the point of the animals best interest or just because you think most people suck? It matters to the critter. Old people get sick and their pets are left in the lurch because they may have no family, did the pet or the person chose that? Not likely. Yeah, things like this terrify me. If something like that comes up when they’re young then you do what you have to because they have their whole life to live. As they age, that decision becomes a LOT harder. I’ve heard many stories where people spend ridiculous amounts on surgery just for their pet to pass away a short time later (or not even make it through surgery)…exactly what happened to you.
If you’re filthy rich that’s one thing but most of us aren’t.
I just hope I’m never put in that position. Not just that but I hope I have the strength to make the right choice when it is time, for his sake, barring anything like surgery but just regular aging. I don’t want to be one of those people who has an animal that’s suffering, with no quality of life because I don’t have the strength to say goodbye.
He’ll be my last pet as well. He wasn’t planned and was a rescue and I didn’t want an animal even when I got him. I love him and don’t regret having him, that’s not the problem. They’re TOO easy to love and they don’t live long enough…that’s the problem.

The cat litter price is awful, an option is wood fuel pellets that are $5 a 40lb bag at Menards. No mess between the paws, the pellets are too large to track through the house and the saw dust wipes clean off the pan. I would never go back just so I don't have to scrape clumps off the pan alone. I was in trouble with my budget because our cat's litter was costing $150+ a month. I was thinking about it and going holy cow, I have to do something. Now I spend $50 a month and I could cut that cause I'm lazy and just dump all the wood pellets out instead of scooping each day since the wood is cheap and plentiful 😉

This was an expensive vet trip. Otherwise yearly check ups are very inexpensive because I take them to a clinic. They are indoor kitties, so they stay healthier. I've spoiled them to no end with special wet food and special treats like tuna, but I need to cut back. It's now only healthy dry food. I just tried Special Kitty clumping cat litter $7 for 20lbs. I'm surprised, it's really good litter, works well. I only need 3 tubs a month. The dry food will be about $40 a month. Sadly, these cutbacks are necessary during these turbulent times.

Until I got attacked by a pitbull last year, I rescued, rehabbed, Nourished, trained and re-homed 20 dogs per year (and the occasional cat). My gift is natural healing. If I didn't know how to use homeopathy and herbs, I couldn't do it. Don't poke your dog in the butt. One rabies shot at 6 months, one distemper at 14 weeks, 1 parvo at 14 weeks. Done✔️. Most dog food is poison. Feed raw, it heals. Stats are a lie, 25 years ago dogs lived 17-25 years now large breeds live 7-12 years on average. It is all the poison flea, tick, heartworm collars, sprays and pills, as well as vaccines and toxic gmo food sprayed with glyphosate weed killer, 60% of dogs are dying from cancer, dogs now have diabetes from the gmo corn in their food. I make the food for our 3 dogs about every 5 days. We have a lab, and a chihuahua and a cross between a small terrier, a NYC sewer rat and a gremlin (so ugly she’s cute). @@joannathatcaresAbsolutely. It’s stunning when people don’t know when to let go. Obviously if you can’t afford thousands of dollars in Vet costs and your pet is aging then choose euthanasia. My cats passed within a year of each other. One was over 14, the other almost 17 years. The Vet visits increased for maintenance. During their last year or so that was ok, but at a point I said to the Vet, “this is probably the end, right”? The Vet agreed. Instead of trying to talk me into ultrasounds, and other very expensive things. And so I let my pets go. There’s a 2 step euthanasia process that’s better and I was glad for that. It’s easier on them. I can’t stand anyone who lets pets slowly die on their own. It’s cruel. They can’t speak up and tell you how much pain they’re in. My Vet also pointed out one cat especially seemed depressed, meaning he was definitely not feeling well and it wasn’t anything obvious like a cold of course.

One woman handed over a small chihuahua that was wearing a dress, to the front desk clerk saying that she didn't want it anymore. Another guest left a pair of dirty, neglected poodle mixes behind in the room without telling anyone.
All dogs found loving homes very quickly.

The increase in cost of veterinary care in my area has gone up like crazy since the pandemic. Spent over 10k on vet bills in 2023 alone. Another thing I’ve noticed is that two different vets we see absolutely refuse to suggest euthanasia. We brought in a 13 year old rabbit, very old and ill, and the vet presented two treatment courses, the first was $8000! The second was 4k. Every blood test and x ray and treatment possible. To put it in perspective that’s like dropping a million bucks to treat a 95 year old human. I had to present the option of putting them down due to their old age.
Even the emergency department, when you call, they say, it’s $300 just to walk through the door before we do anything.
Soon people will be back to taking ole Yeller back behind the shed, so to speak.

Yes, they kept the litter box clean everyday, and took him in to the vet for scheduled checkups and vaccinations. 2 months ago they finally had to put the cat down due to advanced kidney failure. I find out the more you do for your self , you really save some money. This may be why peoples are having a hard time making ends meet. Well yesterday I was at Walmart they wanted 5.99 for a loaf of bread. I went home and made my own bread .I would say it might cost me about 1.50 to make. That was2 loaf of bread. Have a great day

Wow, a friend of a friend was checking on a rental for a landlord. The wonderful tenants left a cage there with a cat trapped in it that was deceased. The cat had just given birth to 4 beautiful kittens. Long story short, we rescued them. Our friend buried the mom, and brought the litter to my other friend. I am planning on adopting one of them. My daughter is planning on adopting another. Now, this video has me rethinking it.

If you can adopt, adopt. Friskies canned food is 80cents a day, dry food is less per serving. Cut down on something: maybe cut out a favorite snack, eat soup made from leftovers. I’ve cut out two days of meat and am actually healthier (cholesterol down), but somehow, save that kitten whose start in life was so very awful. Many are euthanized because they aren’t adopted in time. I wish you the best. ❤

I could never have children so I have fur kids…four dogs and two and a half cats (one is a stray that just comes for the free meal) and in the span of two months; two dogs had an ear infection and one needed vaccinations. The cost was over $1800. I would NEVER abandon any of them and in my opinion; if you can abandon your animals then you didn’t have “pets,” you kept living OBJECTS because that’s all the value you placed on them. If you truly have a pet then getting rid of one is the very LAST FRIGGING THING YOU WOULD EVER DO!!! If you place the same value on a pet as say, a ratty old backpack then a) you didn’t own a pet- to you it’s a THING and b) you have NO BUSINESS owning one! Also, the estimate of $1400/yr for dogs and $1200/yr for cats is not accurate. Especially here in California.

When my last cat passed away in September 2022, I didn't get another one. The cost of pet insurance, pet food, and other supplies was nuts running up to the end. The pet insurance towards the end was running $135 a month while it ran about $100 to $150 a month on specialty food since he was older. After that, the cost of other supplies had gone up, like litter. So it could push up to $400 in a worst case for some months.

It is horrible. My puppy got sick and the vet told me if I couldn’t afford to pay then to surrender my dog to them giving up my parental rights I gave them the required deposit They were not willing to wait 2 days until I got paid to pay the rest. 2 days. I pointed out that I had bought a pet to them a year earlier and I paid them all fees promptly. They didn’t care. Surrender or pup could die. More money upfront or no service for pup. Puppy needed surgery. Thank GOD I did find a vet that was compassionate and a local advocate for dogs paid 500 towards bill. We requested from savings 2000 and vet was paid in full when we picked up pup after surgery. Thank GOD pup is doing very well. This is the coldness and greed in the medical community. I did get some very basic pet insurance and I plan to get more as soon as I can afford. Best bet is to have savings because most pet insurance requires you pay vet upfront and get reimbursed. The vet didn’t care that I had full nationwide pet insurance last year with my other dog. Mind you, I had no outstanding balance with this vet. They wanted payment upfront or a credit care card. Unless you can afford savings, even having pet insurance, your pet could die because vet wants money upfront. It is evil , the greed is disgusting. For humans, they must by law treat emergency. No such law for pet emergencies.

This is a very sad story. It means that millions of pets will probably have to die through no fault of their own. The owners need to get a side hustle to do whatever it takes to take care of their pets. Stop eating out, drink more water instead of pricey drinks that come in cans or plastic bottles. U do whatever you need to do to take care of your pets. Lots of food banks will also try to help people with their pets.

I have a friend that bought two cats for $3,500 and $5,000. He buys meats from Whole Foods, grinds them up and that's what he feeds them. I'd guess that he has a health insurance policy for his cats. But he's far from the norm. There used to be a severe shortage of pets from local shelters during the pandemic as people wanted more companionship because they couldn't have as much human interaction. Now, there are surpluses at shelters. We used to see Chewy delivery vans a couple of times a week in our neighborhood and I haven't seen any of them in a while. That said, I do see an absolute ton of people walking dogs in our neighborhood; but most of them are either retired or don't have kids.
One of my neighbors is really into guns and he told me that there are a lot more used handguns showing up for sale as people need the cash.
