Sometimes great things are done by those least expected to succeed. The story of this little Citizen diver is a testament to that. Let me know your thoughts on this model and Citizen in general. Should I cover more of their pieces in the future? Do yourselves a favour and look up "Citizen Orca", how awesome?🥃

I collect and wear at work Citizen Eco Drives. However I have been rocking the hell out of my first automatic citizen for the last 3 weeks without it leaving the wrist. Tsuyosa NJ0150-81Z in yellow, is impressing the hell out of me. I think you should cover the brand more often as it happens to be a great daily no fuzz bang for the buck brand. Also some of their High End models could in fact give Seiko (GS) a good competition.

I have a seiko shogun. A titanium diver. And I have to say it is wonderful. These Japanese budget titanium diver watches are just so good. No glitz, no ceramic bezels, no precious metals, no ridiculous helium escape valves. Just tidy packages of awesomeness. Never really looked into Citizen but once again your video is making me curious and I’ll have a good look. Thanks bud

I could see this in an opening of a movie:
A watch covered by barnacles is found at a beach, brought back to the manufacturer, cleaned...only to discover etchings on its caseback that reveals clues on its previous wearer. Screen fades to the same watch on the wrist of an individual that sets off on a whirlwind adventure on sea, air and land! It's a blockbuster summer movie waiting to happen 🍿🎞️

Though I'm not certain this watch and its backstory is as ordinary as you emphasize, it may be that the updated, balanced and classical exercise it represents makes it finally quite extraordinary. How many brands succeed in pulling that trick without feeling compelled to add some annoying details or extra bells and whistles that mitigate, if not ruin, their demonstration? Precious little, methinks. Thank you for a great review, as always.

  • @marcuslieberman3577

The Story of this watch, found on the beach with barnacles and still was able to work is wonderful. You are right, the Scale, the Indices proportions and the case is simply a Everyday All Around watch.
A friend of mine recently, said that he has a Citizen that he does not wear anymore, and the battery is dead.(First, I thought it was EcoDrive) So I offered to open it up and look at it for him. He brought it in to work and to my surprise it was a AquaLand! I only read about this watch a few years ago. I took it home and there were 3 batteries. I changed them and I tried to Push the reset button several times. The Display work but not the hands. When I gave it back I apologized, I tried. He said well you can keep it. "WOW" I took it a local watch maker, I saw on You tube after, he completed a circuit with his tweezers and got the hands to work. 15US!! It is a unique watch! The seconds hand hits every marker!!!

Thanks for doing this vid. I have an affinity for tool watches and this is pure tool watch. I recently purchased the new Citizen Challenge Diver re-issue in black on rubber strap. Very simple but purposeful in design harking back to the original 52-0110 Challenge Diver. Titanium makes it light weight and functional. For all the complaints on the bezel action, I do not agree. Yes, at first it is a bit grainy, but that may just be the use of titanium for the case and steel for the bezel. Very positive feel in my opinion with no back play. Use it a bit and everything smooths out. I have had plenty of Seikos with worse bezel action than this watch at this price point. I put mine on a time graph right out of the box and it was dead accurate with +3-4 sec per day and 0.0 beat error. Impressive. I cannot say the same for some Seikos I have tested out of the box which were twice the price. Citizen did a good job here.

    • @ID-Guy
      @ID-Guy  ปีที่แล้ว +4

Thank you for sharing all of this brother! It really has my interest piqued. From an all titanium body, to a bullet proof Myota (great, great movements) And dial aesthetics that had me in mind - from date window framing to a large rectangle at the 12 and text so nicely spaced out and balanced. I heard the bezel was a bit rough BUT you're right about the whole "teething" process. Lots of new pieces need a bit of time for them to settle in. Really tempted to experience on of these and thanks again for sharing! 🥃

A great story and dissection of the design IDGuy, and one of the best blooper reels that I recall on the channel, have fun at Long beef cauliflower in the US and don't forget your wrast whitch. I have a lot of respect for Citizen although I do not have any of the company's mechanical offerings. Every Citizen watch that I have is an eco drive and none of them so far have failed or needed a nudge by a watch maker in nigh on 10 years. The only chink in the story is the bracelets that can feel cheap but again none of mine have failed. With the 9 series automatic Myota within I have no concerns at all in this model. I've not purchased a new Citizen watch in many years but if I was looking at a purchase this model would be the top of the list. That brings me to the price that seems planted in the entry Swiss brand options. I hope it turns out to be a successful watch and it should given the great detail to honest design and clear readability. That's it from me old chap. Poodle tip

Strange how little love the community gives to Citizen. As you say, most divers cut their teeth with Citizen (certainly '90s on), not Seiko. I suppose they have majored in quartz tech, which has lead to their dismissal by some. My wife has a Citizen diver from the '90s - still ticking with way less love than my Sub. Both my kids wore a Citizen Eco-Drive through school and on; my daughter wears hers to go free diving and mountain biking - way in excess of its 'city watch' spec: still ticking. Laughable how when Cartier released its solar quartz Must, the community clapped like seals - wow, a solar quartz, steel, non WR watch for £2.5k..! You'd have that in Ti from Citizen for £250... Also, just saying, the Promaster logo is a LOT better than the Prospex one - original, relevant and subtle. Go Citizen!

It’s actually quite a good looking watch. I’d change the Mercedes hour hand though. I know it’s a reissue. But I feel like a broad sword hand would have looked better.
Also a fully marked lumed bezel would be stellar.
There is a blue dial/bezel variant which is also stunning.
Technically it’s not a slouch either. Fully in house. I don’t care about it too much, but it seems to be what everyone wants these days. Hardened titanium case. Well proportioned and fairly slim for an ISO certified automatic diver.

I'd never do an actual dive with my Hamilton Khaki Diver and expect it to be useful in that role.

Great video but one thing that always bothers me about the coverage of this watch is the comparison to Seiko’s 62MAS. While true the hour markers are similar it is worth noting Citizen did it first. This design can be traced back to 1963 in Citizen’s Superdater diver, a full two years before Seiko’s 62MAS. I think it’s pretty remarkable this design stretches that far back as it doesn’t even look vintage today. Most people casual collectors would likely not even realize this is a reissue at all. Let alone one that goes back all the way almost into the 50s.

You are probably right about it coming from a surfer. The velcro nylon bands were all the rage about then and the chap wearing was probably a tradesperson fitting a surf in between appointments. A tool watch in the truest sense of the word.
