Nikhil Banerjee was younger than Ravi Shankar by more than 15 years and his life span was half of Mr. Shankar. Yet in that short a time he took this instrument to a level underachieved by his predecessor - as this beautiful rendition exemplifies.

Two years before Pandit Nikhil Banerjee's death he performed a program with Pandit Zakir Hussain in DSP durgapur. He was accomodated in Durgapur MAMC guest house for his rest. I was at that time 27 years old and was an employee of MAMC. On program day morning I could manage to sit for about one hour with panditji where I talked with him and could watch him in "reyaz". Before leaving the room I made a "pranam'. Most memorable day in my life till now. Year was most probably 1979 or 1980.

Such a devotional raga, when you hear this at midnight - and you meditate on pandit's music you can feel your spirit embracing you, this purest of the pure music filling your ears - this music cannot be explained it has to be experienced, and those who experience the fullest of this music are the ones who reach a greater level.
The music is more precious than diamonds.

Such an Engrossing comment I came across! The difference between Explanation and Experience is mejestically expressed. Only this type of harmony could make a human soul Capable for going far, breaking this mundane phase of earthly wishings. There exists the higher consciousness or glory of Emancipation or Nirvana (according to Buddhist philosophy).

The music is heavenly! When this record first came out and i listened to it again and again, and never felt bored. I used to put this record on my KLH record player and go to bed. The music do filled the air that in 5-10 minutes, i went to sleep. After so many years, when so many of ragas have been recorded by him, i still find his rendering of Malkauns is the best. No other sitarist can come near it. Exception is Pandi Ravishankar's alap jor and jhala only, and that music also transports you to heaven. A dimly lit noiseless room and a little late evening is the best time for both. They are no more but their Malkauns will live for ever!

I think the instrument made for him by Hiren was of a very special relationship. It allows for extensive meend work and retains its tune and even continuity and with such an attractive tone it is almost addictive. It is probably the highest point in Sitar and will take something very special to be surpassed.

Indian classical music is a form of worship to Almighty. There are a few Ragas which automatically brings a feeling of devotion in the minds of Audience/ listeners ,if performed properly with absolute dedication, devotion and maintaining purity of the Raga by the performers either vocal or instrumental. Raga Malkauns is one such Raga of devotion. Pt Nikhil Banerjee was always very serious about his rendition specially in respect of purity of Raga, with absolute dedication and devotion just like worshipping the Almighty. He was always an exceptional performer of sitar playing.

Out of all the most revered sitar gurus in Indian classical music, I am just but a mere student. But even as a student or even as a lay man, anyone who hears this and who hears other sitarists will say that this is the most purest, most heavenly, most traditional, most original, and deep rendition of malkauns. Malkauns is one of those ragas which are very very tough to master, and based on the playing style these few notes can signify different emotions or moods. Some say it can even conjure up the devils spirits if played incorrectly. It is a mystical raga, an intoxicating raga, and no one can play malkauns better than Pandit Nikhil Banerjee.

Dover Lane Music Conference was performed in Dover Lane at that time, and Ravishankar & Ali Akbar Jugalbandi was in progress and Nikhilda (I must say Pandit Nikhil Banerjee, but he allowed us to address him as Nikhilda, as we being the chamchas of Dhyaneshda, second son of Ustad Ali Akbar Khan) was at a loss listening to their rendition and at one point of time said "কত কি যে জানার আছে ওনাদের থেকে, ওস্তাদজি আর পন্ডিতজি হোচ্ছেন ভগবান, কি ভাবে বাজাচ্ছে দেখ, যেন খেলনা". We were awestruck, person like Nikhil Banerjee could utter such thing was beyond our imagination and he was already an exponent of Sitar all over the Globe!
So was our Nikhilda about whom Bidushee Annapurna said that there was no one to her Nikhil!

The fact that some people cannot appreciate nb's music without bring down or badmouthing his guru bhai and another maestro RS , is a great disrespect and disservice to his music n icm in general .

He came in 125th anniversary of B. E. College, Shibpur (Howrah) in WB in 1981, as far as I remember, he played this raga at about midnight. Whole atmosphere was serene !!! He perhaps did not have any other addiction (unlike many other musicians & singers), that is why the almighty was in awe and wanted to listen to him prematurely. Just listen at about 11:00 !!

Makes me very sad that God snatched away one such as this so young in life and at his prime .... What an exposition of Malkauns!

Its truely sad that he is not with us... Bt he will live on... On and on... But God did not snatch him... God made Pt. Nikhil Banerjee His court musician. Now Pt. Banerjee plays the divine raags for God. Pt. Nikhil Banerjee achieved God through his devotions... He achieved the ultimate...

Great to know Vasu. That you too are a Nikhil admirer.
Do listen to his ragashree with Anindo on tabla a masterpiece in subtlety in percussion quite apart from the total capture of the beauty of the rags on the sitar
