É uma pena que pessoas que não são brasileiras jamais conseguiram escutar essa música do jeito certo. São muitos jargões, itens da nossa cultura que ela se torna uma música "comum" pra que não entende. Percebi isso nesse react.

A sweet line that you need to understand the brazilian context. "Gone to the party, ran way from rumors. We hit the drums, they hit the pans"
When president Dilma Rousseff suffered a parliamentary coup. The mediun class (mostly white) who supported the coup (influenced by TV) protested from inside they homes and apartaments by hiting pans.
They whare used by the rich, and even dont had the balls to protest in the streets.
This pathetic type of protest became known as "panelaço"

Some clarifications: "Ponta de lanca" is a reference for another Brazilian artist, Jorge Benjor, and his song "Ponta de lanca africano (Umbabarauma)"; and "ponta de lanca" is a position in soccer, analogous to the wide receiver in American football.

Oh yes, funk has very much been gentrified. You have artists like Anitta and MC Fioti who got crossover hits that get international play, then you have artists like Ludmilla who toned down the content on her lyrics in order to appel to a wider audience going so far as giving songs to different artists to record as they wouldn't fit in her current style, and further down the "realness" scale you have a bunch of MCs who will NEVER see play on the mainstream radio and yet are huge hits within the broader funk culture or just their own neighbourhoods.

Ricon is incredible, he is well respected in the scene. So about funk, yes, there is a version for radio and comercial success and there is what we call proibidão=that is made for the hood essentially, but still popular, just it's not shown on tv or radio and it's very explicit, very raw and sexual lyrics mostly. And even if some of the most successful artists in Brazil come from funk the genre is still demonized and even criminalized because of it's origins.

So, about the "Funk" in Brazil: I believe it's just easier to understand as two different genres on these days:
    1) The first one, is like an old and classic genre which was close to USA Soul-Gospel, I guess, but it's kinda hard to define what it is exactly. Just to give you an example, It's definitelly not wrong to say that "Seu Jorge" or "Tim Maia", artists you already reacted, are good representatives of this "brazilian old and classic funk-soul vibes" type of thing...
    2) The famous one, the modern one, It's hard to define for not-brazilians too, but it's a brazilian genre created with a very unique and characteristic electronic type of beat, and this genre was kind of "criminalized" in Brazil when it born. First, because, funk was born and popularized first in the ghettos and it turned later into something huge with a lot of sexual lyrics, drugs stuff, some even directly correlated with brazilian "criminal organizations", such as PCC (Primeiro Comanda da Capital) and CV (Comando Vermelho). It had always the "parties" (bailes) vibes, with women, dance, money, famous brands, drugs, and stuff like that. It never had the concern into passing a good message, or something like that. It's closer to "trap" on that sense. Anyways, today, Funk is a more "accepted" genre, with some space in the major televisions, for example. "Bumbum Tantan" by MC Fioti has more than 1 billion views on TH-cam. Even this modern funk has some variations, like "Anita" is what we could call "Pop Funk", there's also "conscience funk" with a more responsible message, among others...
Edit: I forgot something: There's a brazilian documentary in Netflix called "AmarElo - Tudo é pra ontem" by Emicida, one of the greatest brazilian modern rappers. It describes our musical history and the influences for our Rap (mainly Samba). I'm pretty sure you would love it.
And finally, here a photo with Mano Brown (Racionais MC's) and some brazilian "new school" rappers, Criolo, Rincon Sapiencia and Emicida.

Modern Brazilian funk as we know went through three stages:
First one is the type described by our friend above, lyrical content mainly speaking on crime subject.
Then you have the "ostentation/boast funk", seen in hits like "Megane" performed by MC Boy do Charmes or "Como É Bom Ser Vida Loka", this, in my point of view, is what truly popularized brazilian funk within the country, as it made even the rich white kids and spoiled children play the song on a daily basis, no longer that "for the slums" only type of thing.
Third is what we call "funk putaria", well, there ain't really no literal translation for that, but it's definitely no different from something that Eazy-E would write about: money and hoes. And it rocks, really. This genre is the most played in parties and all the conservatives bitch about it being explicit.

Man. I'd like to thank you for the way you started this video, supporting people that sometimes struggle with the language. As a privileged Brazilian who had the opportunity to have English classes, it makes me feel good watching a native speaker congratulating the effort of people from my country. Cheers man, your TH-cam channel is just pure gold. And sorry anyway by any unintended mistake :)

i knew it was a matter of time untill you react to Rincon and it's nice to see him remembering you of Kendrick. Ponta de Lança is literally spearhead but is also a position in soccer, the midfielder that scores and creates plays. When he says "ponta de lança, Umbabarauma'' is a reference to Jorge Ben - Ponta de Lança Africano, maybe you would like to check him out too. Big hug from Brasil, keep up with the great videos!

    Amazing react, man!
Rincon is one of the major '10's rappers from Brasil. He uses a lot of slangs and Brazilian famous people references, so you might not catch all the punch lines. He is a famous producer as well, and he uses a lot of African inspiration on his stuff (both beats and lyrics).
About brazilian funk: it's a genre originated on the favela's in the 90's. It started on "bailes de favela", which you seen in that party scene in City of God where Bené gets shot and dies. Some songs from this age: "Rap do Silva", "Rap da Felicidade" and "Rap das Armas". The original themes were about the life in favelas: urban violence, poverty, etc. However, by the start of the 00's, funk starting popularizing in parties out of the favelas and radios. The content of the songs changed, they started to talk more about love, having fun and dancing. Some songs from this age are "Glamourosa", "Só Love", "Ela Só Pensa Em Beijar".
Since '10's, I'd say brazilian funk is the most listened genre in urban Brasil. Our pop starts are 90% funk singers and producers. Nowadays, the genre is mostly about ostentation. Lyrics are REALLY sexual, talk about dancing, drinking & smoking and this type of stuff. Names like Anitta, Kevin O Chris, Kevinho are some names from this age.
There are less funk music that still talk about social issues, which is a job for the rap scene nowadays. There are many many colabs between rap and funk artists, tho.
    peace! ✌️
