She had throat surgery, it changed her tone to be more "dry". The more technical explanation of why her voice is so distinct is because her voice is very present in the low mid range frequencies and the "air" region (the highest frequency region) while she can't produce very loud harmonics in the harsh region of the frequency spectrum, 3-6khz, which gives her that very distinct smooth tone , i hope that's interesting.
