Reading on my Kindle and listening to audiobooks allows me to go through 4-6 books a month, which is about twice as much as I could go through when reading paper books. And some people have vision problems which prevent them from being able to read paper books.

      Mario Krastanov - I highly doubt Colbert read the original in the original tongue. My father, a Tolkien purist and critic of the invented Elvish verbiage for the three LOTR films, did his own translation of all the Elvish dialogue, in addition to directly translating all the Anglo-Saxon of the Rohirrim into the Common Tongue of the Third Age. Case closed, challenge offered.

      @wolfpytlak2786 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      tbf, you can show a guy a Lotr poster and he'll know wich year was printed. If someone knew (that wasn't an editor of the books or Tolkien himself) it was this guy.

    • @Envyi
      @Envyi 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah but even if someone knows which page of a given copy the archway appears, you still need to know which edition they're referring to. It could be page 101 in the asker's copy, and 114 in the answerer's, and both those answers would be correct.

    • @ZodzillaPrime
      @ZodzillaPrime 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      So preface your answer with 'the copy i have at home, which is this edition, it appears on this page' if you knew the answer you'd surely know the other information.

    • @Envyi
      @Envyi 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Well surely if the answer can be prefaced, so can the question. But then this isn't exactly a fair question to ask considering the build up.
      It's still not a lore-based question, or even a printing trivia question. If, say, there were a famous edition with unique illustrations, or a notorious print run that had a hilarious typo, that would at least be something notable for fans of LOTR to possibly know. But it was inferred by everyone watching that the question would be based on the in-universe lore of the world Tolkien created, not something from our world i.e. page numbers. That's what Stephen Colbert is famously a fan of, not publishing minutae. Considering he referenced Colbert's lore-based trivia-offs with James Franco, we were set up for Gosling to bust out a lore question... but then he goes for a cheapshot and asks about real world page numbers of an event that Colbert is -definitely- familiar with in-universe. Ugh.
