Lollapalooza at Portland Meadows, 1993. Completely blew my mind. Zac was telling the crowd in between songs that all the merch was a scam by the promoters and that people should not buy RATM shirts, just write the band's name with a marker on a shirt they already owned. So on-brand for the band and such an incredible performance.

One of the single most cathartic experiences of my life was seeing Prophets of Rage perform this at Riot Fest in 2017 (the musicians from Rage + Chuck D and B Real on vocals). Surrounded by thousands of people all jumping and screaming "Fuck you I won't do what you tell me" was amazing. The entire weekend was electric. There was so much fresh anger and frustration being vented, and such a feeling of community.

Us Ragers have lots of facts.. First MVS are good but to get the truth of what they're saying you need lyric videos.. I remember when they came out Knox in 91/92 been a Rager since.. This was written about the Rodney King police batting and the subsequent acquittal of those cops, which sparked the LA riots and in turn uncovered and exposed the corrupt hiring practices of the LAPD..🤘😎❤️ and I absolutely loved your breakdown.. Next up should be bullet in the head, down rodeo, take the power back, fistful of steel... I mean every songs a banger... One of these most underrated secret MC around.. I'm so glad you did this❤️❤️

I love the live version from The Battle pf Mexico City, because they change up the second verse to be, "Some of those that burn crosses, are the same that hold office." Which has prpbably always been true post-Civil War. but was especially true back then when Strom Thurmond (a known Klansman) and Jesse Helms (a man who made his name opposing the Civil Rights Act) were still alive and kicking.

Metal is all about an emotional outlet. A few bands I'd suggest are, KoRn, Falling In Reverse, I Prevail, Chaoseum, Linkin Park, Five Finger Death Punch, Disturbed, and of course, more Slipknot. These all fall into the nu metal genre, which is a mix of rap, rock, and metal.

How do I find that version?

    • @InchonDM
      @InchonDM 28 วันที่ผ่านมา

@@GobiPup ELO's slightly misremembering it, in that this was on the BBC. For context, the winning song on X Factor in 1995 was so nauseatingly overplayed that the British started a grassroots campaign to get Killing in the Name Of to the top of the charts to force it to go the hell away. It worked, and RATM was invited to perform on the BBC in celebration.
Somebody, and I HAVE to imagine it was somebody who knew what they were doing, asked them to not say "fuck" during the final lines. And Zach didn't!
      For the first three repetitions.
You can find the recording with "killing in the name of UK" on TH-cam. The panic in the BBC sound booth when, having been lulled into the false sense of security after three lines of no swearing, F-bombs suddenly start exploding around them, is _transcendent._

Most Rage songs condemn oppression and injustice.
This song condemns white supremacy and police brutality. The lyrics were "Some of those who work (police) forces are the same who burn crosses" and "Those who died are justified, by wearing a badge (police) they're the chosen whites".
You should watch their live 1993 performance of this song. They absolutely KILL it in their live 1993 performance of this song.
Other Rage songs that also have a good message include:
    - "Know Your Enemy" WITH lyrics (need the lyrics for that one)
    - "The Ghost of Tom Joad" WITH lyrics (need the lyrics for that one)
    - The official music video for "Bulls on Parade" (quite possibly their most famous song of all time)
    - "Renegades of Funk"

It's even worse now in many ways. This song came out prior to the insane militarization of police in the aftermath of 9/11. Now we know for a fact that there are overtly racist gangs operating inside of the LA Sheriff's Dept. There have been revelations of online message boards for police departments, and Immigration officers which contain huge amounts of explicitly fascist, even pro-Nazi posts. Shit, I've watched who knows how many videos now of cops killing unarmed people. Nothing has changed.

As a fan of RATM, I love the lyrics! They are timeless. It has everything to do with the intelligence of Zach (he has a PhD) and Tom's guitar work, but the bass and drums are fantastic. The entire band is a force of nature with the orchestration and the lyrics.
