Tornado in downtown Raleigh, NC

I was watching that in real time and I have to say, I've never been quite that scared knowing that THAT thing was headed straight towards my area of Raleigh. When it finally "arrived" it got so dark and the wind was so strong it sounded like a freight train was right outside my door!

To the folks saying this wasn't a Tornado, it was. What you're seeing here though is the Mesocylonic area spotters/chasers refer to as the "Bear's cage". The actual tornado was indeed in there, however most of that you see is the wrapped rain. This tornado was one of the more devastating ones that hit during the Apr 16 2011 outbreak, and passed about 1.7 miles tot eh NOAA office in Raleigh.

I remember this. I was living and working in Raleigh. Very scary. I heard you could see it from Wake Med. I was off if I remember correctly!

Sad.I just moved bakto Virginia roots, from Ral., after 30+ No Caro, Ral years...Several friends were 1-2 miles from, but missed direct hits, as the multi-funnels slammed Ral..In late 70s, I lived in Stoneybrook Trlr Park, and noticed you can see a half-second black spot on radar. I know the locale Very well,, and am sure that's what got the 3 Mex?/Spanish-Am? children in Stoneybrook..Too close to my heart, for Them and Friends..Kudos to the families and first responders !!.tejas boy is Lzr..

I ams orry for nyour losses down there. I am in NW Indiana and SW Michigan border area. Our weather has gotten weirder and weirder. You are getting what we think we will get in about a month. We are set up for them a little better. Everyone has a basement for the most part and there are excellent sirens in the smallest of towns. We have trained our children what to do. As we were also as children. All public building must have a shelter area of sorts. I think most are flimsy at best. Good luck

I work right next to ray price harley davidson... luckily wasn't in that day but a friend of mine was and he said a lot of crap got destroyed all around there. ....crazy stuff.

I was at Anderson Point Park at this time, and we were at some party under a shelter. All of a sudden, clouds form and it rains. It is heavy rain and a lot of thunder and lightning. Everyone left, and as we were running out of the park and into the parking lot, I lookup to see a spinning funnel cloud. I pretty much flipped out at this point. When we got home, my mom made brownies. After they were done cooking, my mom left them on the cooling rack to cool down, then my dad turns on the news. It is saying that a tornado is heading towards (the town we live in), and we looked out of the window. The winds are so strong, we have to go in the downstairs bathroom and duck down. Luckily, the tornado didn't hit the area in our town, but other parts were damaged. They had to put new traffic lights up in some areas.

A tree in my neighbor's yard fell on their house during this storm... and one of them was so scared the next time it stormed cried because they were so scared... it was crazy

I remember this day, we had just moved to Raleigh, we couldn't unpack because there was a blackout. So I thought it was a storm, Until I finally found it was caused because of a tornado, and just a few weeks back Feb 24th another tornado hit while I was at school, and Hurricane came through just last month. Those are the 3 scary storms I've cake across of 13 years of living lol, hopefully to see more and explore them as the sights at the beach are really pretty :)

i live about 2 hours away from raleigh and we still got alot of the impat rain hail high winds and my family was over while this was happening so we all got downstairs and watched the news it was devastating

Amazing to see how cars continue to move on the city streets during a tornado threat in a large city. Im sure if they were listening to their radio stations, they heard there was a tornado in the city that afternoon. Yet they continue to move along not knowing how big the threat was.

Im in Cary, NC,Outside of Raleigh And the person protecting our house was under Tornado Warning and he didnt know. Luckily, it didnt strike Cary, but it was FUNNY!

LOL @ the meteorologist. I'm from Oklahoma so I know our guys here have a ton of experience with this kind of weather and I don't expect everyone to be held to that standard. It is sort of surprising/funny to me that they are having such trouble describing the tornado.

I'm from Canada... we do have tornados... we don't have too many douche bags though so I'd doubt that person is from Canada :-) I was on tour with my band when this tornado hit and we were driving from Fayetteville to Raleigh heading to downtown where the venue was for our show! We encountered this system TWICE on the drive and it just missed us both times as in by maybe a mile! It was the most terrifying thing I've ever encountered on tour! A lot of destruction that day :(

I don't care if a place bans smoking on their own accord, as a business owner that should be their right just as it should be mine to choose rather I go in there or not.
