You also might want to consider what is called a "fence tool" in rural areas. This is a combination hammer, diagonal wire cutter, wire staple/nail puller. It can pretty much be used to breach fence, pry doors, hammer windows etc. And its one tool.

They are handy but buy a good one. I've had three of the Menard fence pliers in the last three years. If you can find an old one at a garage sale it would probably last.

When I worked at Walmart, we lost power one day. They let us use those crappy little $1 flashlights so we could still work.
I ran out to my car bag, and switched to my headlight. I was a much more efficient worker bee (no, I didn't get promoted for my ingenuity!)

I would say a heavy duty magnet to use in conjunction with the paracord just in case you drop something down a huge hole or you see something you want and can only safely reach the item with the magnet.

    • @brokefangmagepunk3685

And some locks can be unlocked with a strong magnet. Say in shtf you come across a vehicle that you see has a force multiplier between the center seats, well apparently most lock models can be unlocked with nothing but a magnet.
They can also be used to not trip magnetic door alarms, the cheaper kinds that are just 2 pieces attached to door and frame

a good reach grabber like old folks use is good to have for reaching up to get things off a shelf OR like one place I worked at there was a street drain outside the main door to the building and many mornings there was cash [some times $1-5s and several times $20-50s.... ] the building staff normally collected that.

I’d grab solar panels from self powered signs along with the batteries for them.
Batteries from abandoned cars and anything I could get off the gas powered construction warning signs.
I have batteries, inverters and solar panels already but the extra gathered items would be good barter material.

I remember one time when I was a kid. The people down the street had moved out of their house relatively quickly, and they left a refrigerator full of food behind about three months after they had departed the property me and some friends did a little urban exploring I’ve never seen so many cockroaches, and so much black mold. Granted, we didn’t know the refrigerator was full of spoiled and rotting food when we decided to open it out of curiosity.

If you are cutting chainlink fence a set of linemans heavy duty pliers (which will fit in your pocket) will cut much better than bolt cutters.
Also when cutting chainlink fence start at the bottom and cut the same piece of wire all the way up until you have good wide access so you do not get caught on the cut wire going in and out

    • @MoonShadow74
      @MoonShadow74 ปีที่แล้ว

18 inch bolt cutters will cut a wide array of things easier than "heavy duty pliers" and you have the advantage of cutting things pliers won't. Also, you can get them that fold up for easy storage so they are hardly bigger than Lineman's pliers.

  • @MasterK9Trainer
    @MasterK9Trainer ปีที่แล้ว +4

This a lot, but I feel that you guys really do enjoy feedback and you really had me thinking about this subject. Here are the thoughts that came to my mind.
What to carry should be determined by the scenario and your mission goals.
    1) Does anyone live there?
    2) Does anyone come around or pass by?
    3) Do we have enough time unseen to grab our goodies?
    4) How much of the stuff do you want or need at minimum?
    5) How heavy or large are the items you want? (Barrels, plywood sheets, tires, etc.)
    6) How many people do you have that can help to retrieve and transport your finds.
    7) What tools do you have to work with? (Can you get more or just have to make do?)
    8) What are the conditions? Do we need protection from toxins, debris, animal waste, vermin, or radiation. (Gloves, rubber gloves, Laytex gloves, a hat or bandana, disposable covering such as plastic sheeting and tape, shop goggles or facemask, or even a full-blown gas mask)
If we are grabbing a few items from a house or a gas station a couple of people with duffel bags and maybe a cart would be adequate. A cart is always nice to have.
If we find a warehouse full of useful items, we may need more people or we need more time or maybe carts or vehicles or even trailers to get it all. Maybe we just have to loot and scoot and in other cases we can just get inside and do what we need to do.
We want to move easily and quickly to avoid being seen or heard, so we should choose the tools best for the job and not have everyone carry redundant gear or be slowed down because we are encumbered. A thick towel or portion of a moving blanket can help reduce noise and protect us from broken glass. We may even want to cover windows with black trash bags and tape. If you have enough people, you can benefit from a lookout or two.
A lockpicking kit should be our first consideration, as we can be quiet and re-secure the place, but we may not have one, have the knack or time. Crowbars hopefully will get us "in" without too much noise. In addition to the crowbar, a hammer, ball peen, etc., or a hatchet will suffice. Some may have an axe or tomahawk and some of those have hammering capability. They also sell demo tools like the FatMax. It would be "nice" to have one tool that can cut, pry and hammer.
I'd finish with wire cutters, a hacksaw and bolt-cutters for locks and fences, a few hand tools (screwdrivers, ratchet drivers, etc.) since you'll need them anyway and might find them useful. Again, we pick and choose just what we need. A drill can help make speedy holes, drill out screws and bolts and even cut, but they do make some noise unless you have a hand drill. Again, an old towel, a cloth diaper or blanket can help muffle sounds. You can even wrap a hammer and then whack away.
We might want to have chains, locks and hinges to replace what we destroy. And we'd want a flashlight and a headlamp, maybe even a small lantern or glow sticks so we can see. And taping glass with duct tape makes it break quietly and not spread all over the place.

IMHO, for cart options, i would specifically suggest something called a "hiking trolley" to allow you to go hands free. they come as single or sometimes two wheeled for heavier loads, and can strap around your waste to pull loads a little too big and/or heavy for a backpack and allow you to still use your hands. some hunters like to use them for hauling meat, or traversing unstable ground with a heavy load to help prevent the weight from taking you over if you slip on ice, etc. some people even make their own, or convert a bike trailer.

Wranglestar did a short on a low profile plate carrier that you can wear under your normal clothes and its barely visible. Still protected, but, not obvious. No use in making the bad guy's job easy. Why spoil the surprise?

I know that video. I haven't met "Blitz" personally, but we're both Florida guys. He did another video along similar lines and it was also very interesting and thought provoking.
Initially, if there is a panic, we know that the totally clueless, unprepared and just plain stupid people will panic shop and then looting will occur until stores are emptied or they close up and possibly move what is left into back storage rooms or to a warehouse.
Honest people don't like the idea of stealing things, but the reality is that if you feel you have no other choice but to use what you can find because stores are closed then everyone is probably scavenging. And if you don't use it goes to waste and if you don't take it, someone else may grab everything and then make people pay them dearly for some of it.
Nobody wants to be a thief, but if that's the world we are forced to live in then we have to do what we can to survive until we can become more self-sufficient.

    Bio Buisness on the go:
Bring a pee bottle and a doggie poop bag; holding poo can give you cramps and other problems no condusive to your survial. But also it smells people will know someone was there. Also I htink most people fart while doing their buisness so if you can have some cusion or something to enclose the sound that would be good. So do the deed and take it with you. Same thing for pee, bring a bottle or ziplock bag with a little dirt / sand to soften the sound (and collapsable funnel for the gals) cap it and go. also with a solar still the urine has some valuable water if your in a dry environment. (if you have that kinda time to sit still).
    Johnny-5:
If you have some python skills; you can have a few drones with a single base station that can do a lot of duty, like acting as a mesh network. Or if you have foldingable landing gear you can have them perchy somewher and stationary security cameras (or orbiting cameras if it swivels) Add in some image detection to identify targets and call home. Or if you are solo to alert you to threats while breaching. If you can get some black listed phone CPUs like a snapdragon 888 that can be rooted, you can even think about adding in onboard audio processing. or make them a two way radio platform. Or a little bit of a stretch if the world is quiter you could also use the gyro sensor to detect any significant movment in the building by landing the drone on the target and having the gyro make contact with it (an ear to the ground). (DIY is a world of endless possibility, if you have the time and skill/patience to learn.) Obviously you want a drone with follow feature and a speaker so you can be like starlord while dancing trough a building.
Another tidbit, you could also use your drone to scout for eddible flora, if you are using image reccognition you could have it survey an area and identify possible harvests. ( do a fly by and have the image software crunch the recording later would be better than loitering ) That could add an extra pair of foraging eyes to your team.
    Lighting:
A well fitting billed hat, and a light with the clip reveres. you can clip multipule lights to your bill in varying directions.
Orbital Grip Clips it is what it sounds like. Its got an orbital socket with a clamp to hold your light, and a clip at the other end to hold your light in place. We used them for claymation shorts to move the lights from shot to shot quickly. DIY a good magnet to the bottom of the clip and a securing loop for zipties on the oppisite clip panel. The clip should have a grippy texture or make shift sleaves. If you don't have anything to clip to use some rope and push pins to create a haning point if the walls/ceilings fixtures permit. You should always have extra lights on you (keychain lights are great). Look at mobile phone photography for great lighting solutions on the go.
    Techno Stupidiity:
If you have the time and inclination you can setup a pi network to triangulat a local GPS grid. setup the pi with a 3D printed case to resist weather, get fance with a solar pack. If you have a stock you can expend that networking in a creeping fasion to navigate or relocate areas of intersest. (this is very signal noisey and would be like a lighthouse for anyone with know how to find you.) but it's an idea for grid down digital navigation. A easier~ method might be to have a long range clicker out of a diy radio or some other transmitter. That you can plant at an area of interest and have it chirp (call home) with a signle strength measure.

I forgot to add, If you hold your pee in (esspecialy in cold weather), your body will sacrifice your core heat to keep your urine warm. So get it out as soon as possible, and keep the bottle near your core to recoop some of those lost warmth caleries.

I have a question for you. I don't think I have ever heard anyone mention this before. When out scavenging thru unoccupied buildings/ houses, when you are done scavenging at a location, leaving some kind of mark on the front of the building as you leave so that you will know next time that you have already been there ? Maybe carry a pencil or pen or maybe even a crayon with you to leave your mark with. What is your opinion of this ?

    • @MoonShadow74
      @MoonShadow74 ปีที่แล้ว +2

The notebook takes care of that problem. Leaving a mark on the door or wall only lets others know there may still be something in there that you may want to come back and scavenge again. Also lets others know they have competition and you may not want others to know you exist. Hence, the ever present notebook to detail where you were and what may be left and no one the wiser. Always return the scene to as near as possible as you found it. 3 months into an apocalypse will be a very dangerous time with humans being the biggest threat.

    • @Wastelandman7000

I wouldn't put it on the building if I left one at all. I'd put it discretely on one of the places I used to observe the building. By experience, fuel additives are not needed in airtight systems. What degrades fuel is oxygen and evaporation. I stored a vehicle for five years with a full tank of unleaded gasoline. The fuel pump is designed to close the fuel line with no power. The only thing I did was to ensure my fuel cap was airtight (emission standards require it). It started up with no issues. So, if your fuel containers are airtight, just store them in the shade and you will not have degradation. (Other fuels such as diesel have different properties)

I recommend that you go try to do this, and make a video of you trying to do it. I think you will be surprised to learn just how difficult it is to siphon gas from any vehicle that isn't 30 years old. Especially with that big fat hose on your gas tapper (I have one, too).
I'm not trying to call you out on your own channel, but..... it's nearly impossible to siphon gas from most modern vehicles. If anyone believes otherwise, I'd love to see videos of someone proving me wrong.

I got it that they are energy efficient and lightweight, but when you need more light its not available. Given modern flashlights i prefer a higher lumen flashlight as most will go to lower levels of lighting. I also go with a matching headlamp, that can be my backup. Both can use the same rechargeable battery so im not having to carry around or scavenge for lots of spares. I generally keep a two pack of spares with me, a 21700 and an 18650 with an adapter for the 21700. Yes, they are somewhat heavier but given the beatings they've taken ill stick with them. These same batteries can then be recharged from my battery pack when needed.
