I love the characters, the world, the lore and the general tone of this game very much. There's a lot of great ideas here that I hope they take and build it out into a more expansive game where your actions have greater impact on the world. Lots of what worked well for Wasteland 3 would be great for this game's world.
I thought the same, this game always makes me think of a smaller scale Wasteland 3. I feel it would be amazing to see Wasteland or Mutant: Year Zero do an awesome combo sequel that is the perfect mix of the two.
I played MYZ like a month or 2 after Wasteland 2 and thought the same thing. MYZ world building was just top notch they took all the great things from the board game
i'm very very late to MYZ party (got it cheaply though), one more thing about it I found unique: the game not only allows but in fact actively suggests to players (via notes) to explore areas where even stragglers can easily wipe the whole party in the early game
I loved the game. The lore and world was so fascinating and got me looking up the RPG book and learning that as well. I played and beat this game in 1 very long day lol. I restarted the next day and went a new approach and had equal amounts of fun. The only gripe I had was the base games story ending was a bummer and anti-climatic. Really hope we get more dlc in the future, I honestly don't know what their doing with the game if anything anymore?
Great review again. I don’t mind linear story’s in games and the battle system seems fun. Again I don’t mind killling everything fast and efficiently. I’ll pick this up
Totally agreed with your review. Got it 2 yrs ago and absolutely love every minute of the combat regardless of how repetitive it felt. However i found the story a bit lacking and the boss fights sat on the disappointing side. Im hopefully awaiting a part 2 where they fleshed things out a bit more because the way this game ended give me a bit of a blue balls. Also $40 is a hell no.....as i live in the Caribbean, $40 × 10 is a definite nah. I followed the sale path.
Good one Mortim. I've started the game several times and something always comes up and I am pulled away from the PC for several days or more. I am taking two weeks off for Xmas, I may just spend a day and grind this one out. I really liked having a duck as a character. I *really* wanted to call him Daffy!
The game is good and Mortismal is one of the rare video creator to give it justice. Thanks, Mortismal. I would only add one think : if you intent to make play the roleplaying game as a player character, be warned because the video game is quite a bit spoilery. Mutant Year Zero is TRPG where exploration and unraveling mysteries is key. The video game creator did make some effort to lessen the spoilery contents (lot's of elements are a bit mixed and slightly changed for example) but not all. So, if you are game mastering the game and you know that some of your players did finish the video game, you might want to change some elements of the canon in order to keep them surprised.
I feel like it's the best of it's kind, even if it doesn't really fit a specific type. None of the other games similar to it I've tried have come close
The combat is virtually identical to X-Com 2. I played this game a while back when it first came out. I'm a little familiar with the tabletop version too.
Thanks for another informative review! I'd be very interested in a game with this setting and art direction, but story focused, like Planescape or Disco Elysium. I think it would be very interesting. I can do without combat. By the way, have you played Commandos like games, like Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun, or Partisans 1941?
I think a bit more customization and a stronger story would have catapulted this game up my list of games like this. It has more of a ‘commandos’ feel then an xcom feel. The world building and art direction are top notch tho. I find myself drawn to games like this. I just started Miasma Chronicles and really like it so far. They seem to have kept the importance on stealth gameplay, which I think is awesome. It’s def more ‘sci-fi’ then MYZ and the art direction isn’t quite as strong imo but it’s great too
I first played Miasma Chronicles and enjoyed it a lot. It was my first tactical RPG. I started this one recently, on Normal, and I have more difficultly taking out baddies without alarming a horde of them because my three stalkers can't get one far enough away to finish them off. I've gone through other areas and killed everyone, and I'm at 15, and the next level area is like 21. It's frustrating. It was different with Miasma because you can throw bottles to lure them. I'm not seeing that option here.
Hey mortym I've watched all of your reviews and I want to say they are really good. But the thing is you basically just explain the game and you don't give your opinion over many things. For example you just explain character creation but did they did a good job with character creation ? are weapon upgrades a good addition to the game or are they just boring ? until the last 2 minutes of your video, I don't know what you liked and disliked and what could they do to make it better. Anyway I love your videos keep up the good work
Hi mate very specific question here. I cant find any resources on this game that isn't 2-4 years old. The slinger has no range benefits. It has Identical range (in combat) as my crossbow. The % drop offs are the exact same square. Dux: Eagle Eye + Snazzy Visor Slinger: Green Eye My accuracy drops to 75% at 11 squares from the target with a stat range of 31 like... the heck man?
One of the things that most bothered me about this game, is the phantom ending. Feels like the end was rushed, that they ran out of time or something. Such a bitter taste for a story that hooked me up so damn nicely.
As a swede (Mutant is a swedish ttrpg origianly) the art direction at times was realy funny and/or nostalgic. I liked the game alot. But it realy was a limited game. Not a full AAA with all that entails. But yeah. I like stealth games. I like RPGs. So a stealth RPG was alot of fun. As always RNG can screw you over but what else is new. I like that you can see the chance of succes tho. If it says 100% it is 100%. Over all? A weak 4 out of 5. It starts great but lacks a bit of variety. I got the game for free on Epic tho so my bang per buck was realy high ;)
Very, VERY, good review. Honestly, at this point in my life I had lost hope in reviews being anything other than a simple POV. I mean, sure, that is what they have become but to discover a writer/broadcaster who understands the difference is straight up... well... hope-inducing. Subbed.
Hope this franchise thrives. With larger budget, bigger maps to free roam in, more story and choices, then this game would be awesome. Now it's just great.
@@ryandavid1277 Yeah, Miasma. Looks fantastic! While not Mutatant franchise, not fare off, and guess they are more free developing their own IP. .. Just hope maps/game are larger and game gives more than the tight puzzle combat mechanics.
l just beat this game today and l find puppet helped me beat it on normal, and l only figured out the cheese strat until spear of heaven onwards. Also dux's childlike innonce and his little giggle upon killing enemies is so cute im gonna die, even if the voice actor sounds different tone wise line to line. So farrow-dux-magnus was perfect. Also got it free from epic games. Took 21 hours to finish.
i recommend playing secret world. as a single player game, even though its an mmo. its from the same devs and has great rpg qualities. i bought myz just because of that.
Not difficult? I'm playing on hard and I had to sneak around all higher level maps collecting every weapon and armor piece etc before I could progress. You don't really stand a chance unless you do that
I havent played this game so I cant say for sure, but having played the tabletop RPG År Noll (and the two addons where you played as robots or as animalmutants) and comparing it to what is said in this video... I pick the tabletop. The very idea of playing premade characters in a game that heavily relies on character creation seems like a huge mistake. And in the tabletop you get maps of actual, real swedish cities to roam around in. I, a native swede, recognized the areas my team were in from real life. We even walked around in the apocalyptic version of the neighbourhood in which we were actually playing the game. The freedom of roaming anywhere on the map as you chose fit was another strong part of the gameplay, but it seems that too is severely limited in the videogame. Upon reviewing this game I am sad to see that it will probably not live up to the tabletop version.
I’m glad I watched this because I almost bought it thinking it was going to be different. I was hoping for something that isn’t as combat-focused, has more emphasis on world exploration, less linear, and has no real-time elements when enemies are present. Basically, I want more of a tabletop emulation, and it’s tough finding them on PS4.
I got about 8 hours in.. was having fun - it was a good looking but limited tactical game. However Microsoft managed to break Game Pass so hard it broke the entire save system for a number of games... It wasn't good enough to restart from scratch...
I really wish I liked this game. It was incredibly frustrating gameplay-wise and lacked so many quality of life features. What I wanted it to be ended up being Wasteland 3.
It is definetly not worth 35 euro. Really lackluster in my eyes,10 bucks sure. But 20+ is to much, hell 15 is even to much in my eyes. Extremely overrated.
Look, I know I'm only two minutes in, but you just ran through the overview of the game's world without giving the slightest hint why the character screen is showing a pig and a duck. There was a plague, so now pigs walk upright and shoot guns? I don't think that's how plagues work.
I love the characters, the world, the lore and the general tone of this game very much. There's a lot of great ideas here that I hope they take and build it out into a more expansive game where your actions have greater impact on the world. One of these days I’ll finish Kingmaker and get around to this lol

Thank you for giving this game your all. It seemed to get hand-waved and forgotten
I was so excited to see this free on epic the other day.

They're working on a new project called miasma chronicles that is being released this year, it looks solid
I grew up around the forest where the game starts, which is pretty awesome
I stumbled upon Miasma Chronicles and fell in love. Mutant was extremely fun as well
Great review again.

As usual review is short, but informative while the pace at which you devour games is mortifying
Loved this game. The world felt so alive. Great game and controls are great
I think that this game is fantastic.I love the visual ,the music and the gameplay.

Looking forward to playing this at some point, I don't mind the fact that it's on the shorter side.
I have completed the game, but still want to play, how can I respawn enemy guys ?

New here, did you mention what platform you played this on? I'm guessing PC since you mentioned Steam.
Love this game. Finished it on hard. Only kinda bad thing is that weapons and gear could be more diverse. There is a continuation of the game.
This makes me want to play the TTRPG.
I was trying to keep up with you and I only decided to buy it yesterday ..

The creator(s) of this game story had to have some influence from the old TSR rpg Gamma World. Too close just to be coincidence.
I wish it ran better on switch
Here because Epic is giving away this game for free
I really wish I liked this game. It was incredibly frustrating gameplay-wise and lacked so many quality of life features. What I wanted it to be ended up being Wasteland 3.
I finished this game and killing all the enemies with the stealth approach all the time was sooooo boring 😰
Thanks for this review. I was thinking of buying this game but after watching this I'll pass.
Solid AA game.
Agree 100% tried to like it, but the combat was just so boring.
bad thing is too much combat with only 1 way to do combat effectively it fun till it become too much and start become repetitive
Ten bucks is a fair price. Not a full price or priority purchase for me though.

Literally can't explain it without spoiling the story
It does sound interesting, unfortunately I just have zero interest in a game where I have to play a premade character
