@@JunkWaxHero already am! Since week one!
The hockey card community has overall been disgusted by the price spike in Johnny Gaudreau cards since his tragic death alongside his brother. Rising prices on James Earl Jones memorabilia seems less shocking or appalling given the fact he lived a full life till 93.
Agreed!
The star card debate can be placed at the feet of one company-psa. They quit grading them and people started the not a rookie card nonsense. Now they are grading them again, now they are his rookie again.
NO! Nothing worth ripping. Have had this discussion with multiple sellers. Normally by this time I’ve spent almost 50k on product. This year I’m under 10k. It’s sad. I have, however, picked up a TON of vintage. I’ve got enough for around 30 sets I think. Even 70s basketball and football. Wrapping up another 69 baseball, 2x 71s, 3x 72s, and then who knows where I’ll go from there. Lots of choices. Picked up 30,000 vintage cards in Georgia last night. Briefly went thru it and was dumbfounded. Prob 10x 73-74 basketball sets alone. I was on the phone driving back and told a friend it’s not “Winter is coming”…it’s “Vintage is coming” 😂😂
If I had that coin I'd buy vintage also
Mike, could you please do a video on why you like Semi-rigids so much? I couldn't stand them when I was originally collecting cards back in the 90s, and I still dislike them now. Any time I use one, I feel like I'm chipping the card I'm trying to put in it. I'm genuinely interested in knowing what you and other collectors see in them. There must be something I'm missing since they've stuck around all these years.
Yeah you’re chipping the card because you’re using a bad product! I use semi rigids for grading and for mailing low value cards.
I used to feel the same way, but I find myself using them more and more in my own PC. If you're having issues with semi-rigids, feel free to reach out to me through our website.
@@JunkWaxHero Probably! I don’t seek them out, but sometimes they just come to me, 😂
My issue with them is they never fit into my card boxes like regular top loaders did
@@richardbianco9674 That's an excellent point, and I share that frustration. Believe it or not, that is one of the issues The Pennysleever is working on addressing. I hope you'll join our mailing list, so you can hear when we've got the box you need.
I see this as another example of Wilson making this about him. Why would he comment if he was not part of the sale? The easy answer is that he wants the hobby to be about him. Negatives about him get attacked and positives get supported.
I ordered my semi rigids and they arrived! Love helping out small businesses.
@@mikethibault31 nice!!
Thanks for the kind support, and we hope you'll come back because of the quality and the value!
Thanks for the video! People buy cards off Craigslist? That's wild. Any chance Fanatics didn't go with Bobby Witt, Jr. as the box cover boy because he can still sign for Panini too? I don't think raising James Earl Jones auto prices are despicable. Since he is now deceased, they are a limited resource. Heck, you have Joe Montana and Mark Hamill raising their prices for signatures on particular items while they are still with us.
Another great Clearing the Bases, Mike!
It's always refreshing to see honest thoughts being broadcast, which are backed up with research, and are without an agenda. Unfortunately, too many people in the hobby (perhaps any hobby) become more restrained when they grow - as they are paid by sponsors, or write for publications - and more lazy when their time is scarce. Maintaining your integrity, your freedom to criticise fairly, and being able to back up your thoughts/criticisms with research will serve you in good stead as you progress.
Keep up the great work, Mike! You deserve everything good that comes your way. 👍
Thanks John. That means a lot.
The Star Michael Jordan card is not a true rookie card, because it was not distributed in packs and was only distributed in team bags by dealers and hobby shops. You could buy them through the mail from adds in magazines.
Any press at all for Geoff Wilson is good press to him, he just wants to be relevant.
Definitely no good product to rip, therefore we need breakers to break open all the products so that singles are available.
Great comment.
Hi Mike. I would rather purchase a vintage card than a hobby box any day of the week.
@@jimfalkler9361 yes! Smart man
Geoff… sigh.
I am old enough to realize that DB’s who fleece Noobs isn’t going away… Still irks me to watch self aggrandizing BS and unethical behavior being spread, and even celebrated by the people who don’t seem to understand.
PT Barnum stuff…😢
All these "influencers" are bad for the hobby. They are just a bunch of high school drama queens who seriously need to grow up. I pay zero attention to them, what they do or have to say, and I don't get why anyone else does.
23:43 So Fleer was just printing entire sheets worth of Bill Ripken error cards?
Ha this didn’t even occur to me!
Hey Mike! Well covered. I hope all is great with you.
@@dk_kardboard thanks Doug! Same to you
As quick as the breakers burst on the scene they will eventually bust, its a dirty business (gambling addiction) & kids should be nowhere near it. A kid cant walk into a store & buy a pack of cards no more, somehow that needs to be corrected! That Mays card I am with you on that, for 2 grand, my kinda price for that kinda card
Jordan's Star card should continue to be an XRC because it was not available to the general public and FWIU sold in team set bags. IMO an RC should be non exclusive. It's Michael Jordan and more money can be realized if the definition is altered. Would we really be having this much drama if the player involved was someone else and the money was not so great? Changing definitions - which the hobby considers a convenience - destroys stability in a market.
Regarding the Geoff Wilson Star Jordan - it's hard to get away with much anymore. The internet can reach a lot of viewers but can also be revealing with details.
I'm wondering if we have gotten to the point where PSA cards from the past will get an * at some point. Maybe they need considered a grade or two less than they appear. If a card doesn't have the PSA silver sticker then it may deserve an *. That's where we are headed IMO. It brings up an interesting point though. How does PSA's insurance cover cards they have over-graded? And old PSA 4 would now be a 1. But PSA has previously guaranteed their prior grade? An * would create a major legal backlash. But that appears to be where we are headed. Would an insurance company cover an old PSA 4 that would now get a PSA 1? I think they would only cover the value of a 1 in that scenario. But that's just a guess.
PSA’s guarantee does cover over-graded cards but I don’t know how it applies to really old slabs where it’s only overgraded because their standards have changed.
@@JunkWaxHero I think it would be the coverage at the time of the grade. Unless they dissolve their corporation and start a new one (which happens at times). I don't think they can go back on their guarantee. But I also suspect there is some language about how a claim is paid out. I suspect the PSA guarantee is underwritten by an insurance company. It would probably have to be underwritten to put that much potential liability on a company that size.
@@JunkWaxHero final thought - I think we'll see PSA in a major class action lawsuit over the prior grades. But it'll be settled in a class action manner with some coupon/ redemption for future grading to all the plaintiffs. The money will go to the lawyers. 90% (or more) of the potential lawsuits will be extinguished early with this strategy IMO.
Hi JWH (Mike): I really enjoy watching your videos as a warm up to my NFL Sunday. Always informative and food for thought. Have a nice Sunday! - Heather in the Sunshine State.
Thanks Heather!
Another great weekly recap.
Looking forward to your video about the Cobb. It is extremely frustrating eBay is letting that (other fakes) continue to sell.
I’m pretty sure when someone does a spoof of your channel all the cards behind them will be upside down.
Haha yes
Something's only worth what someone will pay for it. If people that have insane money to spend on the Star card then I'm ok with that. It's not our job to do the historical research for people if they are not willing to do it themselves. If it's a 100k or million dollar card, that's ok, it's definitely not a card I care about so this doesn't affect me one bit.
I don’t feel sorry for the wealthy people who buy up big cards
The price explosion 💥 on the MJ STAR RC has even affected the Topps Reprint version! Haven’t seen one sell for less than $300 over the past couple of months 😱💰
Wow!
As a financial asset that trades in secondary market, there is going to be arbitrage and the adjusted pricing of a just deceased celebrity card, like Jones, is not opportunistic just as the repricing of oil futures went up right after the start of the Gaza/Isreali or the Ukraine/Russia wars. If the current demands increases upon the celebrity’s death, then why shouldn’t the current holder realize the increase instead of the buyer of it at the lower price and who arbitrages at the higher-demand price.
I think we've disagreed in the past, but I still believe that breakers are good for those of who buy strictly singles since they get more cards into the market for us to buy at a fraction of what people are paying for the sealed products. Would it be good if hobby boxes were more affordable? Sure, but I wouldn't be buying them at half the price.
I totally get your point, but without breakers I think there would just be less product and people buying them would be ripping them and selling them. But you may be right.
Thanks Mike, have a great day
Thanks, you too!
Into vintage like u Mike. That Mays was a good looking psa 1. I've seen many many 1's looking worse than that
Exactly
I recently watched a video by Dan the card guy about people using a cat scan to see what’s inside sealed cases of expensive products like Fkawless. Is this what we’re doing now. I didn’t know if you’ve already spoke of thuu it s on previous videos but I thought it’s ridiculous that people are going that far to make a buck and deceive people. I don’t post often but been watching before your 1k. Congrats on your continued success.
@@sportsguy28227 thank you. Yes, I’ve covered it briefly. Dan does a great job.
I think how card companies cater to breakers is bad for the hobby. With every release Topps, Panini, etc get you all pumped up about the big hits that you can find in this product release "Chase after this Auto rookie card of 1 of 1 hit", that in some cases is a 6 figure card (Or more) and on release day, 1 of the bigger breakers out there pulls the card, or multi so called 1 of 1 hits. Then at the end of day, from all of the breakers out there, 80% of the big chase cards are have already been pulled. Which now means the retail and hobby boxes that just hit the market are over priced and don't have none of the big name hits in them. Breakers don't control what is in the boxes/cases they are getting, but the card companies do. We're left with random insert cards that's in every pack along with the base that for the most part, is completely worthless.
Yeah and I think you hit the nail on the head there that it’s not breakers’ fault
These guys (whom some would call the heavy hitters of the hobby)all conspire for the pump and dump. The 55 Clemente example that was written about a year or so ago that highlighted and exposed the whole thing was a clear example. They buy all the Clemente RCs, manipulate the price to ridiculous highs, and then sell quickly leaving everyone else who buys into it with cards they waaay overpaid for and now cannot sell. That’s the broad stroke version but they are all crooks, kind of like those who do that with Wall Street. I wouldn’t be surprised if Nancy pelosi was involved….
😂😂Are you kidding me? Do you realize the tons of Clemente cards in existence? I can assure you that nobody "cornered" that market.
@@vintagecollector5340 it was well documented as to the group that bought them all then inflated the prices. IDGAF if you agree or not I was just highlighting the article I read
@@muricancars797 I don't care if Nancy Pelosi herself was involved...I'm telling you it's impossible to corner that market. This isn't a matter of anyone's opinion, it's a fact. Card manufacturers printed cards in the millions. You shouldn't believe everything you read. Even if it were true, it's the buyers fault for falling for it.
@@vintagecollector5340 oh there’s millions of 55 Clemente’s? I want some of what you’re on please.
@@muricancars797 I can assure you there's a ton of them. Card manufacturers didn't go light on the printing press.
I wonder what amount of $ PSA got in the pay off for them to start grading the star cards? 40 years it's been Jordan's XRC but now PSA grades them it's his rookie card? Lol this hobby is crooked. Thanks for the video!
Good Morning Mike, another Great Video, I have a Serena Williams PSA 10 in my PC,but No Michael Jordan Star cards Real or Fake,Billy Ripken was a little Off Centered PSA 10?,Good Day Sir

Bernie Madoff = Geoff Wilson
I get at LEAST 15 if not 20 "opportunities" to buy these Jordans a week. In this area, the green one is very common. They still haven't figured out the blemish on the original cards 😂😂😅...these things are always PRISTINE and under 30$ raw. They "Dont want to deal with the hassle of grading and selling it" is always the excuse.
Suspicious
@@JunkWaxHero very. Especially considering the printing mark, if you are aware of it, is always on the real deal. NONE of the green fakes have it. The red versions pop up from time to time, mixed into lots that have, ya know, just "Been sitting in a box in the closet" 😂😆
The only thing I hate about the hobby is that scammers. I can deal with about anything else.
The Sherlock Holmes level of investigation applied to Wilson’s star card sale is weird. Sometimes we assume all content creators are 100% authentic but instead a good portion are aspiring entertainers. Quite often in entertainment content is edited, exaggerated & fabricated. His content more than anyone else’s has a Hollywood feel. You might not like it, but it is what it is. We all appreciate the internet sleuthing but the truth in this case changes nothing.
I like Geoff. He's pretty harmless and he's good for the hobby but he's very much a used car salesman.
@@antwill3680 I don’t know that he’s good for the hobby, but I’m also not sure that he’s bad for it. But you’re right about him being a used car salesman!
@@JunkWaxHero I guess the "Only" reason I say he's good for the hobby is that he actually promotes the hobby. He publicly invests in the hobby in a way that makes novices think about it as viable. He also fosters an energy (real or not) that kids should have a focus in the hobby. He puts eyes on card shows and so far, he shows that you can actually run a card shop and it not be limited to a small, dusty side street location with limited visibility. Would I buy a car with 200,000 miles on it from him? Hell no. Not even a car with 1000 miles on it. lol
