    Q and A questions:
    1:13:40 - What is, in your opinion, the best action scene ever?!
    1:20:42 - Have you ever had a strong reaction from watching a movie, some examples would be a movie making you feel sick or a movie making you feel really anxious or stressed?
    1:24:19 - What's your favorite video game?
    1:33:02 - Is there any objective, i.e can a film be objectively good/bad value to film or is it all inherently subjective? People respond to different aspects of film-making differently and see meaning and purpose in different choices made by the filmmakers that others don't. So I believe is entirely subjective.

I didn't know it could be possible to express and show such strong emotions and imagery of an everyday life in the city like that in film. I would strongly recommend you guys watch "Y tu mama tambien" by Alfonso Cuaron. Gael Garcia Bernal is in it together with Diego Luna, they compliment eachother so well in this film. Anyway, glad you guys are doing this, keep it up homies!

    I get that there are some problems with the Last Jedi, and I get some of it, but I don’t see how it can be rated worse than the prequels. I don’t think it hates the previous movies, I think the whole point was subverting expectations and going against what everybody thought was going to happen. I feel like most people are looking at the Last Jedi as the end or the latest movie, forgetting that it’s only the second of three movies- there is still one movie to go. I understand the plot holes, but Star Wars has always had plot holes, but part of the fun (at least for me) is thinking about explanations in universe for why things happened, and who knows, they’ll probably address some of these plot holes in episode 9. I feel like you can’t really judge tlj until it’s sequel comes out because it could change everything. But I mean that’s just how I see it.

    • @MrZackavelli
      @MrZackavelli 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The prequels are miles and miles above those awful sequels. TLJ was probably the best of them, but they're an absolute bastardization of all of George's work.

  • @DarthLore00

    I don't get Ralph's point about the force being something very subtle in the original trilogy, what's subtle about Darth Sidious shooting lightning from his fingers?

    • @jiminyjustin
      @jiminyjustin 6 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      The Emperor was built up to be the most powerful guy in the universe, and hadn't simply reached level 50 force abilities. Because of that, there was still a bit of mysticism surrounding the force's intricacies. That, and he really only used the lightning to forward the plot.

      @Geralt of Trivia Holdo saved the resistance? Rey was the one who did that.Had she not find them, they all would've died. Poe was a commander when he got demoted so his new rank would be a captain. Captains still need to know the plan. Also, him refusing order helped took out the dreadnought. Perhaps you are in the wrong.

    Because I have literally nothing better to do with my time, I thought I'd share some thoughts on The Last Jedi and some counter-arguments.
    1) I don't understand the "nothing is accomplished" argument. Ralph says the different between TLJ and ESB is that Empire had "stakes." But let's look at the two films. In Empire, The Empire demolishes the Rebels in battle but the Rebellion mostly gets out okay and live to fight another day. In fact, the whole Rebel VS Empire thing is pushed aside after the first act. Luke learns from force powers, loses to Vader, loses his hand and discovers he's his father. Okay. Leia and Han fall in love and Han gets frozen. In TLJ, the Resistance is literally reduced to a handful of people. Poe's actions cost untold lives. Finn and Rose failing only makes things worse, since DJ reveals the escape pods plan and that leads to even more deaths after Poe's initial suicide bombing at the start. If that's not consequences I don't know what is. Poe, Finn and Rose unintentionally get nearly the entire Resistance killed. Rey failing to turn Ren only results in him killing Snoke and thus, leaving this unstable kid Vader-wannabe as the new Supreme Leader and the rule of the galaxy. That too, the First Order are basically the new Empire now since the Resistance is reduced to nothing. The last few Rebels escape but otherwise, The First Order wins. They've won the galaxy. Luke dies and is off the board completely, but he also re-inspires the galaxy with his final heroic act. Additionally, it's time for a new Jedi Order to rise from the ground up again to avoid repeating the prior Jedi downfalls. Characters have arcs. Luke bitter with his legacy finally moving on from his past and accepting his status as a legend. Rey accepting that her parents were no one and not to linger in the past. Ren deciding to "burn" everything down, unaware of his own hypocrisy. Becoming more like the Emperor rather than Vader as he wanted to be. Finn starts off only wanting to fight for Rey but finally decides to fight for the Resistance in the end. And Poe learning to become a better leader and that there's more to victory than just pure fire power. The entire galaxy is affected by what happens in this movie since the First Order win in the end and are now the dominant power. Seriously, I don't get this argument at all .If it applies to this movie then it really applies to Empire too.
    2) Yeah...I still don't think Rey is a Mary-Sue. That implies she has no character flaws or never makes a mistake. But....she's not perfect in every way. She got angry with Finn for holding her hand in TFA, even though he ended up saving her life. Stubbornness for the win? She almost crashes the Falcon upon take off. The first time she goes to fire a blaster she screws up because of the safety because she ignored Han's earlier advice that it was more complicated then point and shoot. She does almost nothing to help destroy Starkiller (she opens a door) and when first comforting Ren, he knocks her out and Finn has to fight for her. She's on the blackfoot the entire fight and Ren isn't trying to kill her, "You need a teacher. I can show you the ways of the force." In TLJ, she utterly fails to hold off the dark side and naively thinks when Luke says, "reach out" to literally reach out. She's being manipulated by Snoke the whole film with the mind-connection between her and Ren and it turns out Luke was right all along about Ren being beyond saving. She was also powerless before Snoke and would have died if Ren hadn't saved her. She also failed in her mission to bring Luke back into the fight (Yoda did that for her). Heck, she couldn't even talk to Luke at first (Chewbacca helped her finally confront him) and R2 was the one that finally convinced him to train Rey a bit. Her lifting the rocks is the first major contribution she's made herself to the First Order. Defeating Ren in a lightsaber duel means nothing since he survived. And bringing BB8 to the Resistance in TFA was a shared contribution with Finn. For a perfect character, she fails at nearly all her goals in TLJ (get Luke to come back, get Luke to train her and converting Kylo Ren). Luke failing at the force is....I don't fully agree with that point. At times, yes. But then again, he uses the force to pull off an impossible shot at the end of the original film. He loses to Vader in Empire and in-between films becomes a badass Jedi, (even though he only returns to Yoda in ROTJ so who trained him.....?). Luke is also on Dagobah for maybe a few days (that's how the movie presents it anyway) and he goes from farm boy to being able to flip around and use a lightsaber. But Yoda didn't teach Luke no combat or lightsaber training. So how did Luke get so good with his weapon. In fact, how did Luke know to build a new lightsaber for ROTJ? Yoda never taught him that either? A lot of the time in the OT, Luke similarly is good because the "script says so." Which I never had a problem with, it's a movie about space wizards. The rules were flimsy from the get-go.
    3) According to the prequels, slaves have bombs in their necks so......how were they supposed to release the slaves? And where would they go? The animals can go off and potentially live in the wild. But the kids? Were they supposed to bring them back to the Resistance when they were in the middle of a dangerous escape mission? Eh........Also, they released the animals to help them escape the security. It was a by-product of them escaping. Not their main goal.
    4) Luke being a force projection makes sense with everything the movie said. Luke was disillusioned by his own legacy and the whole idea was that 'Legendary' Luke Skywalker never existed. Him being a hologram was him getting to be the invincible hero everyone thought he was just once to inspire the galaxy. If Luke actually showed up, he would have been killed when all the walkers fired on him. The movie kept telling us that Luke couldn't be the hero we needed him to be, so him showing up at the end and being super-powerful would have been counterintuitive. It wouldn't make sense with the film's themes. Luke proved to be stronger as a symbol than as a man.
    I think that's it. Still a very interesting discussion. You have Alex who liked it, Adam who was indifferent on it and Ralph who leans to the negative side of it. Not very often we have such a variety of opinions on one topic. It makes this episode very unique and interesting. Although I was a bit disappointed the visual elements of the film weren't discussed. Oh well. For anyone who somehow managed to read this far, good job - 10 points to Gryffindor. (Coz I bet no-one has every used that joke before).

    • @christopherrapczynski204

      trogdoar149 yup. I wonder if school grading scales are why, people see 50% as failure, 0-50 may as well be one unit. The Room is a 1/10, inherently by visuals and acting alone, tlj would have to at least be a 3, but it's really pretty middle ground. This is usually how it works, movies that make it to theaters have the budget to atleast be somewhat competent. It's rare for a movie like the snowman to make it to theaters, where it really fails in every way. I love to hate alien covenant but it's still not the worst movie ever, not even close.

    But doesn't Last Jedi feature an entire subplot about how Rey's naviety gets her into trouble? She goes to Kylo because she stupidly thinks she's strong enough and knows him well enough to turn him on her own. In the end she inadvertently lets herself get manipulated by Kylo and ends up leaving disappointed.

      Except what is the consequence for her failure? That Kylo is evil? That was already happening and may not be reversible. She doesn't suffer any consequences for her failure in the long run.
      None of the main characters in this film do. Nameless or minor Resistance members die on or off screen, but the main characters we follow and invest in don't have anything lasting to think about or change from. For a movie about failure, they sure do get away cleanly without lasting consequences.

    • @woah5333
      @woah5333 6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      But then she is fine after splitting up with kylo anyway. You can't even say she was lost because she found her place in rebellion when reunioning with finn and leia.
      That's why she is not straight up boring tho because the first half of it is interesting. I'd say the throne room scene was amazing.

    • @mload45
      @mload45 6 ปีที่แล้ว +45

      Characters making mistakes is essentially fruitless unless the character is actually punished by the plot for screwing up. all 'her' mistake did was lead to unmistakably good things for the rebels, and she just 'happened' to be wrong about Kylo, but it doesn't matter since everything went well anyway

    The problem with changing the way the Force works is that it raises a bunch of questions which can't be answered except by saying the writers didn't think about it. When it's established that Yoda can summon lightning as a Force ghost, we have to wonder why he never just showed up in Snoke's office and zapped him before the First Order blew up all of those planets. The Force was originally written the way it was for a reason, and when you change it, it leads to plot holes.

    The Last Jedi Spoilers:
    Isn’t the whole thing about this movie “hating the previous movies” or destroying things built up kind of tie into the narrative theme of destruction of the past and paving your own way into the future. This is evident in Rei’s obsession with wanting to know about her parents and heritage. She’s told by Kylo about her parents and that they were nothing. Kylo, as a result, told her that it doesn’t matter anyway and to abandon the past. This is also evident in Luke’s struggle with his failure as a Jedi. He struggles to come to terms with his failures and believes that he can fall back on the ancient Jedi teachings. The answer to this in the film was a firm no as well. Because Yoda tells Luke that falling back on the old teachings won’t help him. Essentially telling him to abandon tradition and the practices of old in order to pave his own way into the future. I’m not saying it excuses everything about the film. But it’s a cool thought, I think.

So seeing a movie that portrays an outbreak in a rather real way was so cool! I know it makes a lot of my friends paranoid, but I just was excited the entire time and could relate to scientists’ characters so much!
