- A nurse is accused of performing illegal sterilizations on troubled teens without their knowledge, which resulted in the death of one of her patients.
Season 16, Episode 06, Birthright,
When an abusive young mother and murder suspect suddenly dies in her prison cell, an autopsy tells Detectives Fontana (Dennis Farina) and Green (Jesse L. Martin) that the woman has died from an I.U.D. containing benecrine -- an illegal drug that sterilizes its users -- given by a nurse practitioner (guest star Stephanie Roth Haberle) with a social agenda. As A.D.A.s McCoy (Sam Waterston) and Borgia (Annie Parisse) consider filing second-degree manslaughter charges, they meet a former A.D.A. -- Paul Robinette (Richard Brooks) -- who is now defending the nurse and thinks he has a good case. S. Epatha Merkerson and Fred Dalton Thompson also star.

"Hey, you all right?" 😢 That kid actor's great, just a sweet little boy trying to help.
I was hoping it would be a case of the boy finding someone at just the right time to save a life
He also handled seeing all that blood a lot better than I would've at his age.
The black lady testifying at the end deserves a guest actor Emmy. My God I am crying.
Yeah. Really good performance. First time I saw it and she yelled "Shut your mouth!" at Robinette, I admittedly laughed.
No worries, me too !❤
I can’t listen to this without physically feeling ill. The fact that this woman was forcefully sterilizing women she considered “unfit” or “troubled” makes me feel ill. This scares me.
It is scary. Especially one of them was turning her life around and the nurse she trusted took away her ability to be a mother. All the reason why eugenics is terrible
hearing a mother planning to have another kid to recieve money after poring boiling water on her previous child makes me way more sick that one should be sterilized for sure idc if she wants it or not absolutly disgusting
I learnt that when Indian girls would come for an abortion on the reservation, they too were sterilised without their knowledge or consent. I saw a video where black men in the 1930/40's, who had syphillis, in a Southern state were left untreated, but told they had been, so the doctors could research the disease. World's messed up.
I was sterilized against my will by a doctor that felt women in the working world shouldn't have children.
I felt no sympathy for Tracy; she really was just a rotten, selfish human being. But my heart does break for the other victims who weren’t even given a chance to prove themselves.
I loved this episode, not just for it's insane plot but it was the rare time we saw the "black side" of Van Buren come out, when she was questioning Tracy. I wish we saw more of that.
Cause the show was predominantly written by YT men - bet this was Van Buren’s adlibs
Give me a break. 🙄 It is a TV show. No everything has to be about race ya know.
Michael, what a strange and bizarre comment to make - and it’s even more concerning that people liked your comment, signifying they agreed with your ridiculous rhetoric and micro aggression. The character on the show - Anita Van Buren - spoke to her sternly and assertively, understandably, because she harmed her daughter. It had nothing to do with having a “black side”. Black people don’t have a “side” or a mask that they can take/turn on and off - as if it’s a light switch. Black people are multifaceted individuals and to reduce a character as embodying her “black side” when she demonstrates authority, is insane and incredibly insensitive.
@@sabrina.natalie I love your response, killer with integrity and brains!
Weird comment 🤦♂️
None of the Law& Order shows can beat the original one. S Epatha is AWESOME… as an actor and especially as a person! 🤩 GREAT EPISODE!!!
I hope they continue their investigation into what happened.
Um…you know it’s not real right?
Agreed. That was an odd place to end the clip
First nations in Canada were suffering with force sterilization
I just got that same IUD 3 weeks ago after I had my baby. This has me scared now 😮
High blood pressure is your genuine concern. But you may want to perform your own research. Discover who makes it, their testing result [clinical trials], complications, any complaints from patients, and whether you have a history of heart disease, hypertension, and cancer in your family.
I think the complication was from sickle cell anemia. If you don't have that, then you're probably good. Congratulations 🎉
Are u sure it wasn't Mirena? I bled everyday 4years 8months that I had in Mirena. My life was a living hell. The iud turned to the side into my uterus. I could feel it scraping me nobody believed me. Until they had to perform surgery to get it out. Now I just take the pill yasmin straight without a break
they used a standard copper IUD (usually branded as paragard) for a prop. it's extremely unlikely you got one laced with benecrine.
@@charleslennon1 and I literally struggle with high blood pressure pretty bad 🤦🏾♀️
Y’all need to post a lot more cause I watched all your videos in just one night…. Need more asap
Sad and tragic case. So many moving parts that could be fixed if people took themselves seriously.
8:32 I mean yeah a jury can be horrified but it aint going to work if you file the wrong charge......cant prove an intent to kill (Murder) when there wasnt an intent to kill
So the right charge would be, what? Manslaughter?
Depraved indifference doesn't require intent to kill
@@marksmith3947 gross negligence.
In the court system there’s different levels to murder. The judge said to charge her with murder NOT that the nurse had an intent to kill. This is legal language and based in logic so, murder is just vague it’s up to the court to decide what degree of murder the nurse will be charged with. 1st degree murder means there was an intent to harm/kill with premeditation ( a plan ) in this case the nurse is charged with 2nd degree murder meaning she had the intent to harm/kill but not with premeditation. I haven’t watched the full episode but I’m guessing the main argument for this would be eugenics, the discussion between the mom and nurse, the fact that the nurse knew of the girls blood disease and still did the procedure knowing it would harm her. That is essentially the intent to harm/kill but she didn’t plan do so in the first place. Edit: before anyone replies with “erm but” legal language is based in logic so it’s not really about what you’re arguing it’s about how you’re arguing it. Which is why there’s different levels to murder and also why the nurse was charged because their main piece was her subscribing to eugenics and knowing fully well of the blood disease
@@i_crave_death4660 while acting as a physician, she willfully and/or negligently did not perform due diligence regarding the patient's Hx, blood chemistry, genetic risk factors, follow-up(s) post insertion/procedure, nor consent. You do realize this is a re-telling of aspects of the Tuskegee experiments, the euthanasia mindset of the early 20th century, and Nazi sterilization? Was there malice involved? No. Incompetence, tinged with a touch of racism? Yes. Not bigotry, racism.
Someone convicted of vehicular MS due to a DWU did not wish to cause harm but, due to poor judgment, killed someone due to their actions, 'controlling' a motor vehicle. There is no difference, in my opinion.
That black girl who died was 16?????
Stress ages people, and Doylistly, they probably chose an actress who was a bit older (currently, I can't find Adepero Oduye's age on either IMDb or Wikipedia), as well as using makeup carefully (we don't tend to think about how good the make-up artists on cop shows need to be, because we don't tend to notice as much when they're doing anything other than 'corpse' or 'injuries').
The actress was probably at least 18 -- saves a great deal of headaches if they don't have to follow laws for working minors.
I have actually heard people say women who are addicts should be sterilised. I completely get the tragedies of babies born to using addicts and abusive parents. But the answer cannot be stripping away fertility against women’s will. Society would never do the same to a man.
I always feel for the woman in this episode who got clean, began a career found a husband and was shortly looking to start a family, which she never thought she would be able to do, only to have it ripped away from her.
"society would never do the same to men" what are you talking about? That routinely happend to prison inmates of both sexs untill the 1970s
Was anyone found guilty?
SPOILERS
Yes. The nurse who sterilized Tracy was found guilty of 2nd degree manslaughter.
@@emilyholasek63The authorities found even more victims of forced sterilization and Robinette will not be her lawyer anymore when hearing what McCoy told him what she has been doing 👿👿👿👿
5:58 "why risk using an illegal drug when she can offer a legal procedure to anyone who wants it." The writer of that line did NO research into sterilization on woman. No doctor ot medical center would agree to allow a woman that young with only one kid to be sterilized. Hell, its a fight for woman over 35 who have kids and husbands permission (yes that is required in some places).
Confidentiality survives the patient, if I recall.
It does but to be fair she was already a terrible nurse so
The workers taking the babies away from the homes. We, as the parents, go down to the state departments or call the city or federal representatives letting it be known judges, polices, law enforcements, and their instigators are trying to stop us from working, being housed, and think we going to screw our enemies. The city, state, and fedrsl government and their followers of every drama do not report anything not even the lockouts that the state general clearly stated was a crime. These stories are real. We need real representatives. We should be the ones receiving compensation for being honest about what programs truly need to be funded. Most of the programs has not helped most of us yet and got plenty of people paid damages. We want the ones withholding our compensation, hurt, and lives on hold for years. No excuses. Thsnks for sharing.
Obviously the kids in this were being abused…the workers didn’t take them just because. Stop being a loser looking for handouts and blaming everyone else for your life decisions.
This clip is oddly named. Illegal sterilizations are already tragic.
the consequences of not sterilizing girls like tracy is also tragic. my husband's half-sister has had 7 kids by 4 different guys all before age 25. in & out of rehab, CPS has taken all of the kids, she just keeps popping 'em out. how many second and third and fourth chances should someone get to keep creating and ruining lives? why is it acceptable to let someone have children they don't want but not to prevent them from having children they want but aren't fit to care for?
Also it’s an American show but the title is written in UK English
@@dietotakuso this is eugenics actually
@@dietotakuI think the point here should be that it should only be up to the couple to decide whether or not they want children - once you get doctors or the government involved, sure, they might technically prevent ill children being born, but corruption is rife enough. Where would it stop? Who’s to say they would want to sterilize not just people in poor situations, but the disabled or the sick? What if they had to the right to terminate the pregnancies of couples because the baby would be sick? It’s a slippery slope, and whether you like it or not, extremely illegal. All we can do is support.
And to think so many people justify this and want to make it compulsory... gross.
Can someone explain the iud with drugs part? Were those drugs banned in the States? I do understand the side effects part
if she was sterilizing these women against their will i’m pretty sure she might’ve been willing to get them from somewhere else
There are some IUD's with hormones added. Think of the NuvaRing, but it goes into the uterus and is a t-shaped device. However, all IUD's are risky.
Not a single scene with Robinette? C'mon now....
This is one episode that should be shown to women. Who hurt their kids and to women you have kids just for the benefit or even to trap ppl kids should never be hurt in my eyes simple bc they are kids they have done no wrong frfr
Love this video that black girl who died was 16??? Was anyone found guilty, this is one of my favorite
Episode season please
Season16, esp 6. It’s in the note section 😊
Okay, you guys are constantly showing videos of L&O and SVU when there's like seven other shows in this franchise to show clips from, so can we please expand the horizon here? I want to see some Criminal Intent, Trial By Jury, Los Angeles, True Crime, UK, Organized Crime, and the Toronto version of CI up in this thing too!
Dr. Goodwin wyd here
This is one of my favorite episodes 😁😁😁😁
I wonder about this type of IUD. Once removed, will the person's fertility return after a while?
How long will someone be infertile if they had this IUD?
Sterilized implies it is permanent

Wow. And people back in school gave me a hard time with how I speak. 🙄
I had a revelation about abortion and eugenics in general. When ever humanity tried to interfere with nature or anything natural (childbirth in this case), it has always ended badly for humans.
I patently disagree - if you have a child with someone pretty, you've just participated in eugenics.
Eugenics is literally just the fittest reproducing and the nonfit not.
@drakozozhaeternus2840 You assume it's just too have a pretty child?
DNA can do funny things when it wants to,so there's no guarantee of anything
@drakozozhaeternus2840 You have a very narrow view of eugenics.
The ability to preform abortions has saved countless women’s lives during medical emergencies. The key to it is choice

It’s sad that Tracey died…but she was an unfit mother and definitely didn’t need other children. Wish she would’ve made the choice before someone made it for her.
