I'm going to give my two cent here. First of all, the name Relic Ruin wasn't a official name, fans has named it and been calling it for years. Second, some has say that the levels has bits of graphics other zones, the wacky workbench past secret room, the background of stardust speedway past, all revolving around the Greek ruin theme like Marble zone. The D.A. Garden music (the JP version), some say that it might have been for R2 music, possibly for a Past or Good Future as it sounded more peaceful. Hope this clears up
Isn't Quartz Quadrant basically Marble zone? It has Caterkillers, the moving surface was re used in mania's lava reef which also takes ideas from marble, the boss tries to drop things on you idk
I'd guess the D.A. Garden's JP theme was the Present version, rather than the Past or Good Future version due to 1:33 into it sounding like it would probably be used in a Bad Future theme.
Rainbow Ruins zone. That's what i think it was. First, it fits the level naming scheme: someone clearly had a thing for alliteration, and this fits into that perfectly. Plus, it fits better with the concept art, with the rainbows all over the place. However, we have no clue as to what the letters used would be. So it's probably wrong.
While it does kinda fit with the same naming trend as the official rounds, it could've easily been called something like Colorful Canyon or Troubled Temple

I really like the "music" for the level, but I have a hard time believing it's real (which it probably isn't, as you mentioned). For one, the "Past" music for every level in CD, unlike the other Times, were sequenced music, like on the Genesis. The one played doesn't sound like it could be feasibly played as sequenced music. Plus, all of them have a very "USA soundtrack feel to it," and I doubt the need to make a track for a scrapped level would have even been necessary by the time work on the USA soundtrack began.
6:11 So wait, you mean to tell me that the same game that contains the level "Wacky Workbench Zone" had quality standards for the level design? Furthermore, I'm expected to believe that "R2" didn't meet said standards? The best guess as to why it was cut is due to rushed development. This has been an issue with Sonic games since the very beginning. It's for this reason why Sonic 2 is missing its desert level, why Sonic 3 was cut into 2 games, why Sonic Adventure ended up scrapping the more ambitious stages for more streamlined ones and why Sonic 06 was released as a buggy mess.
This game already constantly fascinates me with everything it had and everything it didn't. Now I'm finding out about ANOTHER unused stage (the other being Desert Dazzle). After this video is done, I'm gonna look more into this
Actually, Desert Dazzle was made by Christian Whitehead for the 2011 remake, it wasn't initially planned for the original game. However, it WAS based off of an unused level from Sonic 2 called Dust Hill Zone.
Considering the Sonic fanbase found not just the _beta_ version of Sonic 2, but it's *_alpha_* one, as well as beta builds of Sonic 3 showing that 3 and Knuckles were going to be just one game and Crackers as proof-of-concept for Chaotix, I'd say it's just matter of time until they find an early build of Sonic CD with R2 in it.

@@gionjiibrahim9774 i think the 510 has the rest of the stages but idk. I don't remember any prototype that has anything between more than the first 2 levels and all of them but idk lol
Where did the name "Desert Dazzle" come from? I know there was unused content in CD used for Mirage Saloon in Mania from a level known as "Desert Dazzle" which was cut supposedly because the western theme didn't seem to make sense to most of the Japanese audience.
It came from the person that made it, Christian Whitehead. He wanted it to be in the remake but it was scrapped because he ignored the multiple regional soundtracks the original had
Wouldn't trust Jalex too much. While he's a rather cool person, he was a fraud sometimes in the past. Also he loves to invent Zone names, which he also does for his stage mods.
Little more info has been found, but with the release of December 92 prototype, at least it is more confirmed to be real due to the time attack selection menu (Unfortunately, it only has Palmtree panic in its coding) Also, Palmtree panic was originally Salad Plain.
A technical question:. Did the sega cd give the megdrive more graphics ram to play with? I probably knew the answer to this all of those years ago when I owned both machines, but thats a long time ago.
The Tracks used are from a song called Take it and theres like 10 different remixes of it, jalex probably used a few of them and called kr *OfFiciAl sOuNdtRaCK*
Judging from the Sprite work for R2's boss, you seemed to gloss over the yellow spring on the back of it. Would have this been a boss where you chase it, with the spring acting as something to push Sonic back?
Wow, I've always wondered about that animated segment in Sonic CD with the badnik that isn't even in the game, thanks for clearing up this mystery for me. And I love that level's music, it really does sounds like 90s club music. :D
For the music part, it's fake, the real version of the song is in the sonic cd soundtracks on streaming services, it's called little big planet and it's the present version of R2. As confirmed by one of the devs. Also for the reason why it was cut out it was probably because of not enough storage on the cd.
The R2 level music, while it is amazingly funky, is actually fake. The original song is "Take It" by Alex Lee. It was also used in the Sonic 1 ROM hack _Sonic The Next Level_, where the song was recreated using the MegaDrive/Genesis soundchip. (I love those alternate time remixes of the song though - I've never heard those ones before!)
The music in this video that was said to be for R2 is just a bunch of remixed versions of Take It! by Alex Lee. No way that would have been in the original game.
Huh, I've never heard of this topic before... or you for that matter! But I like your presentation and now I'm super interested in this and whether or not anyone will pick up on it later. Nice job! I'm gonna check out a few more videos and consider subscribing. :)
I think the Cut zone in CD was Dust Hill/Desert Dazzle (or at least had it's graphics). Those badniks do look like they'd exist in a desert zone. And that robotnik boss looks like it would drive along the sands. A desert zone with ruins sounds interesting. I'm guessing those Desert Dazzle screenshots once belonged to the Past of R2. Further evidence of this desert zone are extra areas on the DA Garden world map. And the background on Wacky Workbench Past (a canyon).
Dessert Dazzle was an idea created by Christian Whitehead for the 2011 remake based off of Sonic 2's cancelled Dust Hill Zone. It has nothing to do with R2, unless Mr. Whitehead had planned on using its scrapped Badniks in Dessert Dazzle.
And by the way, in the 2011 remake Desert dazzle was going to be a replacement for R2 Sally desert dazzle scrapped because they wanted to make the game original but now it came to sonic mania as mirage saloon
Actually, the Jalex777 R2 themes are all fake, as not only do they "use" parts of Take It by Alex Lee, but most of said tracks are just compressed versions of different official remixes of the song. If I remember correctly, the Mighty version is used for the Present mix, the OPM Mix is used for the Past mix and the Good Future mix, and the Mr. Oz vs Klepto-Maniacs version is used for the Bad Future mix.
Yeah, I know, I said they were fake, literally said they were from Alex Lee LOL. They're just a part of the commonly believed history of R2, because a lot of people associate it w the name Relic Ruins

Seeing as they zones all use the same letter for the start of the names, Palmtree Panic, Wacky Workbench ect... if it is a ruin zone and the concept shows rainbow waterfalls the 1st name that comes to mind is Rainbow Ruins
Those music tracks were actually used in a hack called _Sonic VR_ by MarkyJester, who compressed them to run on a Genesis. This was _way_ before 2016, so those tracks are definitely not “new discoveries.”
I’ve heard the past and present themes before in a rom hack called Sonic the next level. don’t know if that helps proves if the songs are fake or not though I’d thought it would be good to mention.
Alright after some quick research I found two things first the song for the act th-cam.com/video/CdL8fJH2mic/w-d-xo.html, and second thanks to a comment on the video states that the song is called “Take it” by Alan Lee and was made in 1990 so thus the song is proven to be fake zone music.
"nah that rom hack used it afterwards" ...despite the fact that you uploaded the songs in 2016, while the ROM Hack was made in 2015. Maybe I'm misunderstanding something here? Your wording is a little ambiguous...

4:37 sounds far too advanced for a Past theme. All of CD's Past themes used the Genesis soundchip (Or something along those lines, I'm not entirely sure) instead of the CD-quality music of other tracks to give them a more "retro" feel. They couldn't be easily altered either, which is why the US soundtrack doesn't have any Past themes to call its own.
My idea for what the boss of R2 could of been You race eggman and eggman places the spikes that you jump over or it will hit you. Eggman does a little boot that shoots little fire from the eggbike's back (yes I'm calling it eggbike) dont touch the fire or you may get hit. If you run into eggman or eggman drives into you. You will get hit. He takes 8 hits to defeat. The back spring on eggmans back will push you back when trying to defeat him. Yeah I know my idea isnt really great and it sounds easy but the bosses in sonic CD arent good anyway
i think if i make a sonic creepypasta ill base it around a unique set of levels inspired by the more obscure lost zones like snowbank mountain from sa2 and relic ruins staying away from the more well known ones like genocide city and desert dazzle/dust hill
Since all past tracks in the game use PCM samples instead of redbook audio, the supposed past version of Relic Ruins seems way too high quality when compared to the rest of the past tracks.
I freaked out when I heard you play "Take It" by Alex Lee at 4:54. That track's been on my playlist for over a decade and I always thought the way the voices are edited sounded a bit like Stardust Speedway. Could it be the Sonic CD soundtrack actually is related to these tracks?
And by the way, the DA garden was dubious Depth present track and the techno power b mix was confirmed to be the bad future track for R2 and the good future track sonic stream was also confirmed to be the good future track
Present music of round 2 is little Planet (d.a garden) music the bad future can be Heard in techno power mix (from Sonic remix album) and good future track is Sonic Stream from Sonic remix album
The r2 thing is actually going to a desert the same one that was cut from sonic 2 so the CD remake was a desert themed zone and Christian white head wanted to add in that missing zone but Sega didn't want them to and what you see in sonic mania is the cut desert stage from sonic 2 and cd
No, Desert Dazzle was entirely created by Christian Whitehead specifically to fill the R2 slot in the 2011 remake and was inspired by the scrapped Dusty Hill Zone from Sonic 2
Desert Dazzle is something entirely thought up by Christian Whitehead when he was working on the 2011 version of Sonic CD. He wanted to add an extra zone, but SEGA told him to keep the game the same as the original version. IIRC he also wanted to add a zone called Final Fever as well, and he even designed a brand new final boss for the game. But SEGA said no. When Christian Whitehead was finally allowed to make brand new zones for Sonic Mania, he expanded on his ideas for Desert Dazzle and Final Fever and turned them into the fully-fledged Mirage Saloon and Egg Reverie zones.
Yeah. There are 3 zones if anyone didn’t know that weren’t released: R2 Zone Desert Dazzle Zone and Final Fever Zone, the once planned final boss zone...
Actually you can play it in the mobile remake. It's a secret you can find by falling into a specific pit in one of the stages (the one with vines in a cave I forget it's name). That's actually how I found out about it. The state isn't called Relic Funds though (but again I don't remember it's name).
Yeah, you're thinking of Mystic Cave from Sonic 2. That led to another scrapped area called "Hidden Palace"--not the one from Sonic & Knuckles although the 3&K one might've been inspired by it
there is also new zone comeing soon 1 desert dazzle and a new final boss FINAL FEVER but sega ended up forgeting that plan and did not put in the sonic cd i was so mad that desert dazzle and final fever was not add here a good ending can remind sega to make then rember but for now it not in the game
What is a better are you sure this will start the Uggs sound called DD it Unused but I have pleasant before in the dead bed you of Salt Lake city since it does give you an option to play the bonus levels and that was the only unused bonus level so I can most likely find but it's been replaced with the zone that you just recognized with I think but there's soda different so this could be a dude but I really do not know

Also he loves to invent Zone names, which he also does for his stage mods.
wow ok
Little more info has been found, but with the release of December 92 prototype, at least it is more confirmed to be real due to the time attack selection menu (Unfortunately, it only has Palmtree panic in its coding) Also, Palmtree panic was originally Salad Plain.
OH wow thanks for the shoutout!
Lol, no problem, but- were you subscribed or did you just find this lol
tbh i stumbled onto this. but ill sub :P
He gave you a shout out Jalex...you better sub. XD
Ah yes, *Little Big Planet* nothing wrong there.
Jalex's music is actually a remix of Alex Lee - Take It
The R2 level music, while it is amazingly funky, is actually fake.
I always wondered why the cinematic showed that ruined area with enemies that never appeared in the game!
Desert dazzle Is a level that Christian Whitehead wanted to add to the remake of Sonic CD to be a replacement of the original R2
Not only that, but it was based on Sonic 2's level, not any unused level in CD.
Dessert Dazzle was an idea created by Christian Whitehead for the 2011 remake based off of Sonic 2's cancelled Dust Hill Zone. It has nothing to do with R2, unless Mr. Whitehead had planned on using its scrapped Badniks in Dessert Dazzle.
dude desert dazzle was supposed to be a new zone for the 2011 remake of sonic cd
And by the way, in the 2011 remake Desert dazzle was going to be a replacement for R2 Sally desert dazzle scrapped because they wanted to make the game original but now it came to sonic mania as mirage saloon
Hey do you have a link for the bad future version of the song at 5:13? It's actually pretty rude!

@@tallestflash Well here you go the unused JP R2 Bad Future Track or it unused track for another zone like the original R9 which is likely the desert area for little planet map

I haven't watched the full vid yet, but I wanna ask, is it normal that I have the entire level of R2? I have it on my tablet. I just got to the level.
Why we won’t be able to play this level?we are able to play a even finished hidden palace zone in sonic 2 and it was also a cut level that didn’t make it to the final release. So why not the same with R2 in one future?
Your editing is fantastic
R2 can depend on which version,
Original: relic ruins/ not marble zone
2011/origins ver: desert dazzle/ not dust hill zone.
desert dazzle was a level planned for the 2011 remake but got scrapped
@@crazyexpresso I know, most likely was planned to be the second zone in the game. Due to the coding. Or thats what I think DD was gonna be at.
This was _way_ before 2016, so those tracks are definitely not “new discoveries.”
is it robotic ruins perhaps?
Those rainbows could be rainbow waterfalls.
I’ve heard the past and present themes before in a rom hack called Sonic the next level. don’t know if that helps proves if the songs are fake or not though I’d thought it would be good to mention.
nah that rom hack used it afterwards
Alright after some quick research I found two things first the song for the act th-cam.com/video/CdL8fJH2mic/w-d-xo.html, and second thanks to a comment on the video states that the song is called “Take it” by Alan Lee and was made in 1990 so thus the song is proven to be fake zone music.
yep that was clarified
"nah that rom hack used it afterwards"
...despite the fact that you uploaded the songs in 2016, while the ROM Hack was made in 2015. Maybe I'm misunderstanding something here? Your wording is a little ambiguous...
Check out my latest episode of Hiddenblocks here :) th-cam.com/video/cpudSBPxrzE/w-d-xo.html
Wow, you still remember this vid? I forgot about you, bud.
@@mattok101digitaltamer9 Late response but yes! I update this video's comment whenever I come back because it's still bringing lots of viewers to the channel xD (as in for yesterday's new video too!)
What's the background thumbnail from? It looks like marble zone but blue and updated more.
lisnovski.deviantart.com/art/What-if-Marble-Zone-in-Sonic-Mania-703610812 It's a mock-up of a mania version of the stage by a really cool artist named Lisnovski. Check out more of his stuff in the link :)
Thanks!
I forgot this and also I was confused when it skipped 2-1 in the stage select
I’m gonna try to unlock D.A. garden maybe it is relic ruins
I want to see this level return 😁 cool video 👍
The songs can't be real because the "past" tracks use the Sega Genesis's sound chip, not CD quality audio like the "present" and both "future" tracks.
Someone needs to egt in touch with some people who worked on CD and ask them if the song sounds familiar or something.
I think Sonic CD is the best Sonic game, but this video is VERY interesting! Subscribed and liked.
*marblegardenzone*
2:50 where did taxman even get this?
I love the intro my guy
How do I make a 3d Sprite like in the intro I've been trying to do that forever
4:37 sounds far too advanced for a Past theme. All of CD's Past themes used the Genesis soundchip (Or something along those lines, I'm not entirely sure) instead of the CD-quality music of other tracks to give them a more "retro" feel. They couldn't be easily altered either, which is why the US soundtrack doesn't have any Past themes to call its own.
GuyWithThePie not the Genesis chip, all PCM/MIDI
Also, it would be just decompressed.
GuyWithThePie the CD had its own soundchip and they probably used it to save space on the disc, plus it could just be a concept music.
Yeah it's fake, it's just a remix of a song called Take It by Alex Lee.
My idea for what the boss of R2 could of been
You race eggman and eggman places the spikes that you jump over or it will hit you.
Funny how you say that marble garden is one of your least favorite classic sonic levels yet you mistakened marble zone as marble garden in this video.
i think if i make a sonic creepypasta ill base it around a unique set of levels inspired by the more obscure lost zones like snowbank mountain from sa2 and relic ruins staying away from the more well known ones like genocide city and desert dazzle/dust hill
Uhh... The ACTUAL music of the stage was reused in the DA garden I think
In my opinion
Relic Ruins Zone is gonna be a mix of Marble Zone from Sonic 1 & Aquatic Ruins Zone from Sonic 2
For Short
It gonna be Aquatic Ruins Zone with Marble Zone Level Design (Sorry...)
Funny that Round 2 has been semi-confirmed to be based off of Marble Zone thanks to the recent release of new level concept art in Sonic Origins.
@@johney-duh-one "new level concept art in Sonic Origins" seriously? Can i get a link or a screenshot?
@@lam7207 Sure thing.
info.sonicretro.org/images/5/5b/SonicCD_MCD_Development_LittlePlanet.png
Since all past tracks in the game use PCM samples instead of redbook audio, the supposed past version of Relic Ruins seems way too high quality when compared to the rest of the past tracks.
So there's no actual level that we can make the game load over another stage in the game and play it?
It flat out wasn't relic ruins. It was something similar, but not that.
I freaked out when I heard you play "Take It" by Alex Lee at 4:54. That track's been on my playlist for over a decade and I always thought the way the voices are edited sounded a bit like Stardust Speedway. Could it be the Sonic CD soundtrack actually is related to these tracks?
They aren't related at all
Love your fucking 30 second intro next time I'm hoping it can be like 2 damn minutes!
that lost level might show up in a future sonic game
If every CD level is a "remake" of one from sonic 1 what is wacky work bench and quarts quadrant?
Perhaps those rounds were of Spring Yard and Labyrinth zones?
No final zone and bonus stage *joke*
someone prolly said this akready but marbelzone in sanek1 is listed in the files as zone 3 just saying
Let's hope it gets recreated in the future Sonic Mania updates.
And by the way, the DA garden was dubious Depth present track and the techno power b mix was confirmed to be the bad future track for R2 and the good future track sonic stream was also confirmed to be the good future track
Why is this unused I'm going to cry
Fun Fact : the Real name of R2 was revealed
And it's Dubious Depths
I thought the cut zone was Desert Dazzle? Which the mania team used as inspiration for mirage saloon.
Ill take your word for it, thanks! Love Christian Whitehead and the Mania team. Im hyped for Mighty and Ray and whatever is in the future. :D
It's not marble garden ugh this video is both weird and good
Yeah. There are 3 zones if anyone didn’t know that weren’t released:
R2 Zone
Desert Dazzle Zone and
Final Fever Zone, the once planned final boss zone...
desert dazzle and final fever were levels planned for the 2011 remake but got scrapped
6:02 music of sonic mania in background.
chemical plant zone 2
Even though that music is fake, it is good music, especially the "bad future"
Actually you can play it in the mobile remake. It's a secret you can find by falling into a specific pit in one of the stages (the one with vines in a cave I forget it's name). That's actually how I found out about it. The state isn't called Relic Funds though (but again I don't remember it's name).
Pretty sure youre thinking of a stage from Sonic 2
Yeah, you're thinking of Mystic Cave from Sonic 2. That led to another scrapped area called "Hidden Palace"--not the one from Sonic & Knuckles although the 3&K one might've been inspired by it
there is also new zone comeing soon 1 desert dazzle and a new final boss FINAL FEVER but sega ended up forgeting that plan and did not put in the sonic cd i was so mad that desert dazzle and final fever was not add here a good ending can remind sega to make then rember but for now it not in the game
Jump to 0:35 to skip the intro. You're welcome.
Can you link that music?
What is a better are you sure this will start the Uggs sound called DD it Unused but I have pleasant before in the dead bed you of Salt Lake city since it does give you an option to play the bonus levels and that was the only unused bonus level so I can most likely find but it's been replaced with the zone that you just recognized with I think but there's soda different so this could be a dude but I really do not know
