I’m a bass player and am trying to learn guitar and this helped a lot since on bass you play with your finger flat because it mutes all the other notes
OMG when I finally got it I SCREAMED I had been trying for MONTHS to be able to play frets right and hearing the correct sound made me so happy 😆 ur vid helped me a lot and now I’m going to be carrying a sharpie around so when I play I mark my “real” finger tips👌🏽
@Clamart Celon run through scales very slowly and only press down enough to barely make a clean note, over and over. slowly. land almost on the fret and be concious of how hard your pressing and where your fingers are moving. your pinky is curling to give your other finger strength because your fretting too hard, and now you have to train your pinky to not curl. i do my scales with a barre chord (index finger across all 6 strings) and the other fingers run the scales. work up to that point and you will see quick results
I totally agree in certain playing with your finger tips but I also recommend playing with being ABLE TO bar all strings with one finger too. Super important for chord structure😎😎
Thanks. This playing guitar id proving to be harder than I thought. I have no frame of reference right now so I feel like I am learning blindly, if that makes sense. I always appreciate your videos, thank you.

QUESTION? TO LOOK OR NOT TO LOOK. Erich I have asked for helpful ways to keep time while changing chords and you have me good advice on one of your life sessions. I am improving but I need to ask this. If I play and look at my fretting hand as I change chords I get clean crisp sounds but I still have trouble keeping time, now I have found out that if I just keep my on the music sheet and just feel the chord change I can keep time much better but I will not get as clean of a sound. Is it alright to quit looking at my hand and develop a feel for the chords and play a little sloppy or should I stick with the band watching and play sweet sounds but struggle with keeping time? I know with practice, which I do every day, that I will get better keeping up and watching the chord change but it sure is fun just letting it happen, keeping time, and hoping that in time I will get the right sound every time. Practice, practice, PRACTICE!!

Great tip...been playing about a year and can see that my callouses extend a little south of the finger tip sweet spot...now to find where I left that marker.

Hi Erich, I heard Joe Satriani say this same thing in an interview /style lesson. Your lesson is fundamentally needed by many, you are only the second person I have ever heard emphasize this important technique.. I have been using this idea about 2 years now. It works. My problem.... pinky on my fretting hand wants to jut outward leaving me using the outside of the pinky on long stretches. Not sure if I have a weak pinkey or its an naturally unnatural problem. Ever seen this issue before? Is there fix? Great lessons, really enjoy all your videos.

You can be like me play bass and then complain I can’t fit all my fingers. My hands are embarrassingly small. It’s all perspective and relative to your frustrations.
I put my finger on the top string and i would get a good note but the string below it would be muted because of my finger and im really struggling on how to fix it. Could someone explain to me what im doing wrong please?
Erich,, I can't believe that I have never heard this before. Makes perfect sense. I have not done that. No wonder I have made a lot of suckie sounds. Keep doing what you do my friend..
When you press down on the string, with the tip of your finger of course, should the string touch the wood? I've seen different answers to this. Some say you should only put enough pressure so that the string hits the fret. Others say the pressure should be just enough for the string to hit the wood.
no you don't need to put enough pressure to touch the wood. in fact, sometimes if you fret it that hard it can cause the string to bend up in pitch slightly. you technically just need enough pressure to let the note ring out clearly. at least from my experience/knowledge!
Hi. I am a senior and years ago l played rhythm guitar quite well however now fingers are very tender plus my strength isn’t what it once was. Is there anything l can do to help me so we’re l can jam with some friends. Thank you
Great video. Please can you clarify 'tips of fingers' - I am a beginner struggling with fretting and based on your comment about the hardest part of finger hitting the string it suggests the nail itself is best. When I try with my nail I can get it to work but I googled and found another couple of teachers saying no do not use the nail. I don't understand which is right as seems logical if you are pushing on metal to use the hardest part ie enamel rather than skin. Please can you / someone advise?
Hi, so I don't really have finger tips, I have a long nail bed, witch juts out above my finer tips, no matter how low I cut nails, my finger tips are below my nailbed. Help! I am willing to share a photo
Serious question How do you mute the E with your thumb, or play a power A while only using your fingertips? BC many songs require muting with your fingers, and I personally cannot play in those scenarios only using my fingertips. It’s easy to use my fingertips picking, but I am definitely hitting a wall with what you are suggesting in the scenarios i mentioned
Erich, I'm a beginner (6 month), trying to get my thumb to stay in same position, and struggling with my pinky. I like easy riffs where I don't have to reach so far.
The thing I don’t get is I see the fingertip supposed to touch the string above to mute then sometimes see that not being done with players .any advice ?
Pros can “cheat“, a little bit. But until you learn the proper way, first, you won’t know when you can do that. Check out the fretting video in my gift to you: www.yourguitarsage.com/30
Thank you!!! I have ALWAYS felt as if my hands were too small. I’ve been playing guitar for about 20 years but still feel like a struggling newbie. I even tried primarily playing rhythm because I didn’t think I could do any of those cool solos... I basically have taught myself and I KNOW I have developed horrible habits when playing. I’ve been watching your videos and have learned SO much!! I have to do what Yoda says and “unlearn what you have learned” to be able to become better. Your videos are awesomely amazing!! I truly appreciate your time and knowledge. Thank you again!!!
Any tips on my pinky looking like an inverted L while playing (doesn’t curl kinds locks and unlocks) and my elbow keep hitting my ribs as i go to higher frets. I couldnt find videos on it. Maybe I’m holding my guitar wrong. But I’ve nailed the parallel finger thing, pretty much i guess. (i can play major & minor pentatonic scales on about 80bpm, but i feel uncomfortable as i go to higher frets)
I find myself wrapping my thumb around and over the fret board to keep the neck ‘still’ while I’m practicing, so I’m having trouble keeping those fingers curved properly. Any tips?
Yes, parse down what you are doing so that you can focus on being mindful of your fingers curling. You will build neural paths that will make it to where you won’t have to do it consciously. I talk about this in my chords video that you can find Here in my gift to you: www.yourguitarsage.com/30
@@yourguitarsage is it also better form to set tips behind fret wherever possible? Less effort area, lighter pressing to achieve note associated with that fret?
using the tips sounds SO much better but it feels so awkward my wrist is killing me? dropping my shoulder helps, but it still feels like my hand is twisted sideways :(
My fingers keep locking out on my third and fourth finger. My knuckle like collapsed and my finger is stuck straight except the tip. I’m able to play with it but I don’t think it’s right?
my fingertips can barely touch the strings since my fingernail can't be trimmed shorter. I do not want myself to stop learning because of physical limitation. So what can I do right now :(
I have an issue with my pinky where the joints are extremely stiff, and can only bend to about 4 different positions before it snaps in place. Any ideas on how I can work around this?
My fingers hurt badly. My hands are very small and it hurts my wrist to bend it so my small fingers can reach the frets but i still cant reach the frets. What do i do?
I keep muting out the string completely I think Im placing my finger wrong or maybe in pressing too hard, I don't know. Does anyone have any advice? :(
Hi Erich. I have been following you for quite a long time now. It first started with my love for music. I was in the hospital and I had surgery that the anesthesiologist screwed up on and left my left leg paralyzed. I had the idea that I thought I should learn to play the guitar. While suffering with chronic pain for years I always turned to music as my escape. After being paralyzed I started watching videos and came across your channel. I really liked the way that you were teaching your students to learn. I was amazed at how enthusiastic you are to help others learn to play the guitar. Now that I can't get around very well I have continued to watch your videos and live streams because I found out that I could learn a lot without even having a guitar. Now that you are giving away the Epiphone PR-150 guitars and your Unstoppable Guitar System I would be elated if I was chosen as one of the lucky winners. I would love to be able to learn to play the guitar with your help. I can't afford to buy a guitar so if you choose me as one of the Winners I would be extremely grateful to you. You could change my life for the better as I would have something to focus on that I really want to do. The fact that both my parents have passed away recently doesn't help me either. I feel lost and would like to invest my time into learning to play the guitar. I believe it would help fill the emptiness in my life because I would have the chance to learn the songs that were favourites to my parents as well as myself. I realize I would not learn to play the guitar over night but I would not give up. The Epiphone PR-150 Guitar and your Unstoppable Guitar System would give me the tools needed for me to accomplish my DREAM. PLEASE HELP MY ERICH.
Much "smooshier"... scientific term.... Just on that I gave you a like 🙂, I am an "older" (euphamistic term for old, ancient and decrepit) very very VERY basic beginner.... and my first struggle is the fretting hand being very disinclinde to do what it is told to do. So I will follow a couple of videos and see if an old dog can be taught new tricks.
Thank you, Dennis. I appreciate that. Start here, my friend. This will guide you through the first 30 or so vids that every guitar player should watch for free and in order. www.yourguitarsage.com/30
i just got my guitar in the mail yesterday and i’m very discouraged i feel like my hands are pretty big, but they don’t seem to be big enough for the fretboard i tried doing the spider exercise and my fingers barely reach the frets and it’s overall extremely uncomfortable 😔😔
"Humble yourself" is simple but a great tip. Thank you ♥

My fingers hurt badly. My hands are very small and it hurts my wrist to bend it so my small fingers can reach the frets but i still cant reach the frets. What do i do?

Do we have to press too hard
I have often wondered already if there was some thing to put on my finger tips to help play
I keep muting out the string completely I think Im placing my finger wrong or maybe in pressing too hard, I don't know. Does anyone have any advice? :(
Yes, it’s simple but not simply explained. Check out the fretting video in this free course that I am giving you: www.yourguitarsage.com/30
I’m just starting to play the guitar and I know nothing, every time I use my finger tip on the fret it jus mutes the string
Dont press too hard and dont press directly on metal
How can you mute with the fretting hand if you play with your finger tips?
How i do it is i relieve the pressure on the strings so that my finger tips are just resting on the strings.I hope you found that helpful 😊

Nice wish I had a new guitar, im a beginner.
Get an old busted one with some flavor.
My biggest problem , sometimes my 4th finger fall between 2 string , I will practice that
Playing B is my biggest struggle.
I have been trying for hours whenever I put pressure on the fret the string ends up making no sound and just having me being disappointing once again
Are you putting pressure on the fret or behind it? Never press directly on the metal. You should be pressing down directly behind the fret.
i just got my guitar in the mail yesterday and i’m very discouraged
i feel like my hands are pretty big, but they don’t seem to be big enough for the fretboard
i tried doing the spider exercise and my fingers barely reach the frets and it’s overall extremely uncomfortable 😔😔
Ashley, I promise you can do this. But here is a link for free access to some vids that FOR SURE will help.

YourGuitarSage thank you so much!
How are you doing with the guitar now?
I just started and I feel the same! I feel like my hands are too big!
