Once Upon a Time in the West (Italian: C'era una volta il West) is a 1967 - 1968 produced epic Spaghetti Western film co-written and directed by Sergio Leone. It starred Henry Fonda, as the villain, Charles Bronson as his arch nemesis, Claudia Cardinale as a newly widowed homesteader, and Jason Robards as a beloved, supportive benevolent bandit.
The screenplay was written by Sergio Donati and Sergio Leone, from a story by Dario Argento, Bernardo Bertolucci and Leone. From it's inception Leone brilliantly aspired to create the ultimate composite western film that captured inspiring scenes and elements embedded within the most acclaimed western Hollywood produced classics such as High Noon, Shane, Red River etc.
Interestingly the scenes were shot using dramatic departures in camera angles, zoom, focus pulling and mechanized camera motion (reportedly employing crane mounted multiple camera and microphone arrays) that helped Leone achieve what he described as continuous visual motion choreography. Leone was well known for his steep learning curve with regard to sound effects (for instance his unique Winchester gun fire "twang") as well as his dominant sound track driven action sequence crescendos very noticeable in his Clint Eastwood trilogies. He noted he was totally frustrated with Foley editing and persistently erroneous synchronization errors present within his film frame layback posting and for "Once Upon A time" he pushed the envelope of Italian production techniques aspiring to demand as much real time sound capture during scenes without extensive need for looping and Foley drop ins. His first step toward achieving "choreographed synchronous visual motion Sympatico" for scenes was to enlist the input of colleague (and life long friend and scoring composer) Ennio Morricone and from the inception of his work used pre existing score fragments and individual thematic score characterizations for each of his four leading actors. From the start of rehearsals (and into the actual filming) actor movements, action sequences, and scenic transitions were filmed using two track audio dummy tracks to insure film soundtrack and dialog aggregate perfection. Many have noted that this was in a sense Leone's evolution toward (in a sense) the music video approach to cinematography. It's original European release underwent several revisions, with the widescreen cinematography undertaken (as a labor of love) by Tonino Delli Colli, and the breathtaking acclaimed film score composed, arranged and conducted and ultimately supervised by Ennio Morricone. The American release was truncated (shortened in running time), and initially not well received for almost 20 years due to it's departure from Leone's previous spaghetti western techniques. There is no question that this work still continues to gain in notoriety, critical acclaim, and popularity. Restored, re released and embellished repeatedly Leone's Once Upon A Time In Th West occupies notoriety as one of the top five westerns of all time, and is still climbing
This upload (with the exception of the operatic original intro
featuring the original score performed by Morricone's wife Edda dell'Orso, delivering soprano "wordless vocals" herein features a more dominant frontal soprano performance recorded from an actual live recording of Patricia Janeckova rendered and remixed from her youth Czech competition in 2012. Watch here: v=kOy6M_X2MO8
The most famous passage in this film is of course the main theme for orchestra and the wordless solo soprano of Edda dell'Orso, a device Morricone used on numerous occasions but surely never to quite this effect. Its most brilliant use in the film is when Jill first arrives at the train station and discovers that her new husband and his children are not there to meet her - the camera follows her through the door to the station, then pulls back, moves up and the moment it reveals what is beyond the station - the busy town - the music swells to its biggest proportions. It's as stunning a use of music in film as you could find. This offering pays tribute both to this film masterpiece, in both it's original form and exquisitely interpreted by Patricia Janeckova decades later.

Ms. Janeckova's live performance (from March 30, 2012) of "Vtedy na západe" is faded into this presentation at the 1:11 time signature demarcation and can be noted by a live audience applause response to her stage introduction. The original sound track introduction which precedes Ms.Janeckova's performance features the world renowned original artist from the film score performed by Ms Edda dell'Orso. Orchestral accompaniment samples from Ennio Morricone's sound track were added sparingly to the live performance on sequenced recreated accompaniment for purposes of ambient effect and acoustic continuity from the original score to this masterful recreation performed decades later by this young artist.

    Correction to the description:
Edda Dell'Orso was never married to Ennio Morricone, but they collaborated on the music for many film projects, including this 1968 tune, "Jill's Theme" in "Once Upon a Time in the West".
Many years later, Maria Travia Morricone (Ennio's actual wife) and Audrey Nohra Stainton wrote the lyrics for "Your Love", which was sung by Dulce Pontes for her 2003 "Focus" album with Ennio.
