    I'm Danish and honestly, the idea that Scandinavian women wear this kind of glowy, hazy and elfish makeup is a myth... at least when it comes to younger women. we normally just wear like mascara, cat eyeliner and dark eyebrows. That's about it. We as a people are just as average, unflattering and uncreative with makeup as any other nation, lol.

      Yes, it’s as boring a stereotype as the one that all French women wear red lipstick, almost no other makeup, have Bardot bangs and wear floral dresses, wicker baskets and platform espadrilles. Been to France countless times, including Paris and you see all sorts of French women, slim, curvy, full face makeup, no makeup, sport wear etc.

      honestly, it's not even scandinavian, it's K-beauty, it started in east Asia so... yeah, I mean most ppl just put mascara and call it a day but this specific style it's and always will be "k-style"

    • @seasonalien125
      @seasonalien125 4 ปีที่แล้ว +74

      @@Sol-gq1pu wow, I don't think you can claim that. It's not like no women around the world (or even in Scandinavia) do makeup like this aside from Korean women. I wear similar makeup, for one, and I'm not inspired by k-trends. This is a pretty basic style of makeup, anyone can and has come up with it on their own.

    I see so many people talking about how they can’t do this makeup because their skin is bad. That makes me so sad. People always sell this type of makeup as all natural beauty, but they’re working on the assumption that a person shouldn’t have acne or dark circles, even though acne and dark circles are completely natural (especially hormonal acne on teens or people who menstruate.) I’m not trying to insult the person who made this video, I’m just saying that it’s not “natural beauty” if it doesn’t also embrace acne or discoloration or any other natural things that people have on their skin.

      Hello! I think you may be misunderstanding what I’m saying. I’m not trying to say that the makeup tutorial should include more or less makeup; I’m not even talking only about this makeup tutorial. I’m saying that natural beauty or natural makeup is often conflated with a type of beauty in which someone is effortlessly flawless, and those are two different things. I don’t think anyone, Sissel included, is intentionally trying to conflate these two ideas of beauty. To be effortlessly flawless is to be someone who already has no blemishes and does very little to themselves to achieve their perfectly clear skin. It’s being ideally beautiful without effort. I think this is very different from natural beauty, which should include the acceptance of natural blemishes that come despite skincare. I think the conflation of the two is the reason why so many people feel put off by makeup tutorials like this. (Again, through no fault of Sissel.) People are often made to feel that natural beauty means being effortlessly flawless, when in reality it means embracing all their blemishes while highlighting their favorite features.

      Dark circles make a you look sick and tired and no one likes acne.

    • @everettlopez9127
      @everettlopez9127 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      s h a m i I do get dark circles when I’m sick and tired, but I also know a lot of people who have more pigmentation under their eyes naturally. I know that acne can be shitty to have because it hurts and people get bullied for it, but most teenagers and a lot of adults cannot totally avoid it no matter how hard they try. As a teen, I had acne that I tried so hard to control and I dumped a bunch of money into skin care products when in reality the best thing for me was to wait until I was out of my teens, then it went away. I know a lot of people with cystic acne who took medication that made their painful cysts go away, and that was great for them! But then they struggled to accept the way they looked with acne scars, which are costly and time consuming to make go away. I think natural beauty should teach people that their acne or scars or dark under eyes don’t make them ugly. Things that aren’t conventionally considered attractive don’t necessarily have to be things we cover up, because they are natural parts of us.

      Emilie Everett apart from genetic stuff on skin as blemishes, discolorations or vitiligo, etc are natural... acne or bad blemishes is a sign that your skin is not healthy so instead of covering them up (it actually is worse), so you should focus on curing them first and wear just a bit of makeup or nothing. Also ho can she make a video of vitiligo (for eg.) If she doesn't have it? There are plenty of vids on that.... also you can take the less is more lesson no?

    • @latenightcake5881
      @latenightcake5881 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The point is to have good skin, aka take good care of it , spend alot of time on it etc, if you do that you dont need to wear makeup or very much, yeah some people have acne but if those people spent the money they spend on stupid shit on a dermatologist and good skin products they would have better skin. Terrible acne is not a natural thing, its caused by poor skin care . Yes its hereditary but it's also preventable.

    As a Finn who prefers minimal makeup it's weird to see many teens prefer the "instagram" makeup with 1 kg of foundation and stuff on face. Not saying it's wrong to do so but almost 99% of them have too dark foundation and it makes their skin look so dry, patchy and most of all, it makes them look like 10 years older than they are... Which might be why teens choose to go for that style of makeup often?

    • @WillowBunz
      @WillowBunz 4 ปีที่แล้ว +40

      This Finn agrees. I think people only feel compelled to buy and apply so much because the makeup industry has convinced them they should wear more to be their standard of beautiful, perfect, and accepted. They put out these shiny colored products and say it will make you look prettier and younger when it's really just a mask made of toxic minerals and chemicals that do the opposite. They do this to sell an image, more products, and ultimately make money. I think most women would rather skip all that nonsense, use a clean moisturizer, hide a blemish or two, and just be seen as lovely the way they are. Because there are so many more worthwhile things in life to spend our time on.

      In my late teens, I think we want more makeup partly because of the beauty marketing but also because they want to look older. I personally have always preferred a minimalistic look. I think a fresh face is the way to enhance, not cover.

      Foundation isn't the worst. For me, it's when they reshape their lips to be fuller, or to hide the cupids bow... I like people who have lips like that naturally, but it's very obvious when they are painted, and they don't look good.

    i love seeing this so much because i've been jumping on board with this sort of look lately. It's been a journey. I love makeup and want to pursue it as a job, but i found that I was putting so much on everyday. I started to realize i should give my skin a break, but even then, i could never leave the house without a bit of concealer, eyebrows filled in to the max, mascara, and eyeliner. I have come to appreciate the natural beauty that all women have, including myself. I feel a lot better about my face these days, and don't feel the need to cover it up or change it anymore.

  • @whyhihigh

    i feel like the ultimate goal, imo, for beauty trends is less to no foundation. also just being happy in your own skin, even if you have acne.
    just like Sissel says: “embrace your natural looks”.
    maybe focusing on eyes, eyebrows or lips is just all someone should do.
    it doesn’t change the person, only making certain parts of the face more brought out - put in focus.
    i think - and this is gonna sound _super_ cliché - that my mum is absolutely stunning. she doesnt have thick eyebroes or big cat eyes, but she just makes everything kinda pop - you know?
    darkening the eyebrows, sometimes something on the eyelids but other than that just mascara. that’s really all someone “needs”, and by that, no one _needs_ it either. but ofc, you should have fun! just don’t feel the need to wear a mask to feel pretty everyday. if you feel that, then something’s obviously not right, and it’s probably something mentally that needs to be fixed, _or helped :>_
    please add on if there’s anything you think is beautiful, but minimal, too!

    Like other comments mentionned it, I think this trend is more generally european. Like in France, it's been a while since the trend is wearing light to no makeup at all. We even have an expression for people putting too much make up, it's "pot de peinture" which means "can of paint" and it's not a compliment here. Even if I think people should do whatever they want with their face =).

      Nobody “needs” makeup. Aging is natural and a blessing. People should be more happy to show off their age. Strange how some cultures actually chose to focus on wrinkles as a good thing and a sign of wisdom etc . But in modern era, people are afraid to have grey hair and aging skin. People are so superficial now , it’s upsetting. Oh well... people gonna people.

    i’m finnish (so technically nordic since we’re not scandinavian) and i prefer natural makeup over heavy (instagram) make up! i like to keep my lipsticks closer to my own lip color and i only wear light brown/nude/dark pink-ish eyeshadows when i use it! i have oily skin around my t-zone tho so i like to have a more matte look on my face but that’s just my personal preference on *my* skin!

    As a Finnish person I prefer minimal makeup. You are right about jewelry. While I use eyebrow pencil, mascara and nose highlight and sometimes concealer under eyes, I never leave without a necklace. Something about necklaces really makes you beautiful. I also pick earrings if I wear my hair up or when my ears will show up.

    I'm scandinavian and I love to wear colored eyeshadow and lipstick. I like to work with a natural base, then I add a little bit of pink eyeshadow and just a tiny bit of red lipstick that I blend out. Then I make a really fine wing with eyeliner. I'm really pale and have long, red hair so I think that kinda look makes me look angelic. Nude colors doesn't work for me xD

    I’m a girl from Sweden and I really wish that the Swedish beauty standards where like the rest of Scandinavia. In Sweden the Instagram full look is in treend and I really don’t like that all the time I personally like the soft look. So i was a little bit confused when you talked like all women in Scandinavia like this look, I really like it but I know that the majority in Sweden doesn’t like it but at least is good that the rest of Scandinavia like this look it’s so beautiful

      I'm also from Sweden and I think that the natural trend is actually more trendy between Swedish (or Scandinavian) instagrammers and people in the ages of 25 and up. Being 24 and a teacher, I see a lot of students wearing layers of makeup due to the "trend". I also think it has a lot to do with the fact that they're beginners to makeup so they turn to mua's on instagram and youtube to learn and these mua's tend to advertise that layered look. I will add that since social media is in our daily lives, students and young adults tend to focus more and more on their looks, which many times leads to covering insecurities up due to achieving the "desired look". I, myself, love the natural makeup trend! So I really hope it'll trend world-wide and more on social media!

    Beautiful tutorial! This looks SO much prettier than pounds upon pounds of foundation. I love it when women embrace their natural beauty! Work what God gave you! And if your skins a mess, as so many commenters are saying, work on getting it to a healthier state, from the inside out, don’t smother it with makeup and then complain about your natural skin looking awful. Sorry, not trying to be harsh or hate, but come on ladies! We all have beautiful attributes! Let’s stop wearing masks of makeup and let our natural beauty shine!

      You get skin cancer if you’re staying out in direct sunlight for a prolonged period of time very often. You need to go outside often for the sunlight to get vitamin D. I’d even argue that the reason there’s an increase in people diagnosed with depression might even be because most people dont spend enough time in the sun. A symptom of low vitamin D levels is depression

    I don't think is just Scandinavian, in Italy and also France I think, Spain too, if you wear a lot of make up is strange and not common, usually people tend to tell you "why are you wearing so much make up? You look a lot better without it" we have a strong concept of natural beauty and that's what an Italian girl would try to achieve

    Most european women wear minimal makeup on a daily basis. The younger girls (about the age of 15-25) often wear heavy makeup when they go out and some even on a daily basis, but most girls don't wear a lot of makeup or even none at all when they go to school. And when a woman has kids, most of the time they don't wear a lot of makeup anyways because they have no time to put in a lot of effort every morning

      I think the whole natural makeup trend that's happening is more about enhancing your natural features. I don't think natural makeup means using little to no makeup, that's just some people's preference. You can create a natural makeup look using a whole lot of products if that's what you prefer or if that's what you need (not everyone has perfect skin 😂).

      It's a way of speaking, if a girl want to be really natural she can't shave any part of her body, or trim her eyebrows, or dye her hair, lighten it, iron it or curl it. And fillers or any aesthetic treatment is forbiden too. That is natural (at least the real one) but society hates the real natural look, so..... Yes, it's a hypocrisy, I know 👯🙍 The problem is that beauty standars says, for example, that women are prettier and femenine (meaning: more woman) with noticeable eyelashes, that it's a trait of femeneity. But for a blonde or readhead person or even with light brown hair it's quite unlikely that eyelashes can be noticeable as that beauty standar says. If we don't follow those "rules" (beauty standars) society call us unclean, dungy, woman that doesn't care abut herself, neglected, etc. That's why being really natural is almost impossible.
