Term cypherpunk:
Let's deconstruct the term cypherpunk itself. The word "cypher" means code, and "punk" refers to a counterculture attitude that thrived in the seventies.
The cypherpunk movement:
The cypherpunk movement united tech rebels, hackers, and activists interested in cryptography and individual freedom.
“A Cypherpunk’s Manifesto”
In the early nineties, Eric Hudges wrote a book called "A Cypherpunk's Manifesto," which stated, "Privacy is necessary for an open society in the electronic age."
Cypherpunk and privacy
As the World Wide Web grew exponentially, people became concerned about corporations and governments using their power to violate their privacy.
Brainy cypherpunks started developing security technologies based on encryption for individual use and secure communication over the internet.
Why cypherpunk matters today?
Cypherpunks developed things such as anonymous remailers, public key cryptography, and digital currencies even before bitcoin was a thing. Hats off to the geeks for laying a foundation for cybersecurity as we know it today.
