My German refugee relatives taught me that a sense of humor, if you can find it, can be a vital survival skill. Opa loved Hogan's Heroes...Oma hated it
Having a sense of humor in the classroom, one filled with teenagers throughout the day, was a wonderful an oddly "disciplinary tool," because they saw the teacher being silly, and there's nothing like a good laugh from your audience to create a positive learning environment in the end.
Hogan is an easy choice for favorite, but that's only because he was the mastermind and headliner. The other characters were so enjoyable and entertaining to watch. Each character had an important part to play it seemed in every episode. It was a very nice balance, and you got to look forward to watching each character. This show had a very large ensemble hence the length of this video. All the actors/actresses were very good. Amazingly their characters were well developed despite the plethora of characters. The storyline and antics were funny, entertaining, and dramatic, too. The show was great. In many ways more enjoyable to watch than other great shows of its era. The theme song was great, too. Now on to see the re-runs again!
There is a continuity error in many episodes, in some episodes there is a sink by the door where they use the faucet as a parascope and other episodes there are a set of lockers in the same location.
How come you guys can never get the actors names right? It’s Werner Klemperer not Klempner. Also it’s Robert Clary. Not Clay remember, you should never be afraid to use google
Agreed. It makes it hard to accept some of the details I did not know, because I don't know what the narrator may have gotten wrong in _those_ details. At 26:08, the narrator's going on about "Clay" (Clary) but showing Larry Hovis as Carter. Also, some inserted clips of the actors have a massive decrease in volume level.
One weird thing is it was said correctly early in this video, then at around 16 min, was spoken wrong as Klempner. I could be wrong but I think this is an AI voice and it read from a script where it was spelled right the first time, then spelled wrong another time.
About Leonid Kinskey: I never have believed that account of his leaving after the pilot because he was too virtuous for the subject matter. I think that, in the middle of the Cold War and 3 years after the Cuban Missle Crisis, American audiences were not interested in seeing a Russian portrayed as an ally.
I heard it a bit differently: he thought that knowing that the Russians were segregated from all the other allies and were put in separate camps (when not outright killed) and no one would believe a Russian mixed in freely with the others.
Excellent documentary. I'm 67 and all I can remember is going to friends house or doing something for someone either in the late afternoon or early eveing and Hogan's Heros would always be playing.. By coincidence, many of my friends fathers flew bombing missions over Germany and were big fans of HH. One was a ball turret gunner and had on his desk three altimeters mounted from the three B17s they had to scrap cause they were so damaged. He told us several stories from missions he barely survived... Some were so funny my rib cage would be sore the next day... `His name was Wayne Schofield.
In Carol Ford's book "Bob Crane..The Definitive Biography" show said that Cynthia Lynn (11:43) found out years later in 1978 that Bob Crane was doing "Beginner's Luck" in Scottsdale, Arizona and tried to call him a few days before his murder. She left a message at the theatre where the play was held for him to call back "Fraulein Helga" in hopes they could rekindle their relationship (she had been divorced recently and knew Crane was also about to divorce). However, she never heard back from him and was devastated when she found out he had been murdered. She said for years afterward she had recurrent nightmares that he was crying out to her for help.
I've been to Sgt Carter's House In Tarzana when I was a kid. His daughter was a play Mate of mine. I remember him leaving in his VW Bug Convertible. My only claim to fame.
Werner also played a German inspector/police part in a Perry Mason episode. One thing about Larry Hovis...he almost always wore gloves. He was not married in the show but he was married in real life and refused to remove his wedding ring for the show. They covered it with gloves most of the time. However, it can be seen quite often.
It's always fun to read a viewer's contribution(s) to (at least) a portion of the biographical backstory of the subject of the video. On occasion, I watched Perry Mason episodes with my mother on our 21", B&W RCA console TV, complete with the "rabbit ears" on top of the set, which would help draw in the "Signal" for the three TV stations during that time: ABC, CBS, & NBC--in "Living Color!" (I am referring to the period in my life here when I lived in Columbus 9, Ohio.) So I am aware of that show and its many wonderful qualities. Now you have peaked my curiosity, and I would love to see Werner in the role that you have mentioned. Thank you for sharing that. ~ (As an aside: Prior to the passing of Raymond Burr, he and his husband owned and lived on a (grape) vineyard estate, which I believe was located northwest of Healdsburg, here in Sonoma County, California, a 1+ hr. drive north of San Francisco. Unfortunately for me, I did not learn about their winery (et al.) until after his passing, or I would have loved to have at least met him, providing he was occasionally present at his winery.)
@@FactsVerse I actually have a few favorites. Season 3 episode 16 Carter turns traitor. Season 3 episode 19 Hogan go home. Season 4 episode 11 Bad day in Berlin.
In 2014, I had the honor of being seated at a table next to Robert Clary’s at a restaurant in Phoenix, Arizona. I introduced myself and mentioned that I watched reruns of Hogan’s Heros with my father when I was younger. Shortly after, Robert and his party left the restaurant and said goodbye to me. A few minutes later, Robert came back into the restaurant, sat down next to me, and signed his book. He gave me a pat on the shoulder and said it was an honor for him to meet his fans.
Russian spy…”Oh, Hogan darling”. Or “I know nothing, nothing!”. Any time I pick up a cooler, I always think of “30 days in the cooler!” I have been brainwashed. My wife is right along with me on the Hogan references….and here I am at 67 thinking what a nice impact it had on me. My dad’s side of the family also fled Germany and only 4 made it. The last survivor was my dad who died last year at 94. He fled at 9 years old. Never would talk about it. No German accent. More New York.
When this show was previewed on my small city TV station the station-manager who was a Canadian WW II veteran sourly commented "World War Two just gets funnier every year".
I always thought it was funny with the outdoor shots. The big dirt berm / hill outside the fence, can also be seen on episodes of Andy Griffith Show, because the Mayberry set was next to it. Barney flying down the dirt road in the squad car with that hill right beside the road.
Andy Griffith show, Gomer Pyle, and a few other shows were filmed next to each other. Even Star Trek used the Andy Griffith show set in one of their episodes. At the time the area was nicknamed the Back Forty. If you watched closely, you can see the sets of others shows in the background.
Al Ruddy was a guest at one of my film seminars at university and related the story change as well as selling the idea to CBS. Management at CBS had changed hands which was a nightmare for anyone to face a new, uninterested management team since his initial dealing was with the previous management. As Al began to tell the story, he could tell it wasn't going well, then decided to tell the story using the characters different voices, still no response, he continued, then a few chucles began, leading eventually to laughter, and finally getting a commitment for the series. Al was originally at the Rand Corp., think tank, in Santa Monica, before making a change to writing as well as his feature works with The Godfather trilogy among others.
At 30:02 they show how brilliant Carter is by saying he made chlorine gas out of "pneumonia" and bleach. I bet no one else has ever been able to do that, either before or since!
we all loved the show despite inconsistencies (or maybe because of them) Carter was my favorite and he was subject to the most variations; from bumbling idiot to chemical genius to master impersonator and a 'believable' delight in all roles..
Not quite the way i rememember Hogan's Hero's. Some inacuracies and pitifull naration, however; all the ww2 veterans 30:54 i knew loved the show. One veteran said and i quote, he said "sig heil, in case we lose !" BTW, Howard Caine who played "Major Hochstetter", was an accomplished banjo player. From 1970 until his death in 1993, he won trophies at 29 prominent banjo and fiddle contests for both "Best Traditional Banjo" and "Traditional Singing".
From watching other videos about the history of the Desilu Studios, if I remember correctly, "Hogan's Heroes" was filmed on Desilu Studios' 40-acres backlot. And if you saw a wide screenshot that takes you "out and across" the compound, past a guard tower, to a high berm, I believe that over that long, high, earthen boundary one would see a "typical" housing tract (of pre-WWII homes) in a neighborhood in Culver City, California, a place where "regular 'ol people" went about their everyday activities. What an interesting contrast between the "Make-Believe World of Hogan's Heroes" and the "Real World" just a few footsteps beyond that high berm! (I believe it was Lucille Ball, the owner of Desilu Studios with her husband, Desi, who gave the "Green Light" to allow production of the "Hogan's Heroes" show on their studio lot.)
Some errors in this with regard to actor names. Robert Clary is referred to as Clay. And worst of all Werner Klemperer is referred to as Klempner. Very careless.
So many missed mention of the actors, post Hogan's Heros roles. Example, Richard Dawson was the first host of the popular game show Family Feud and a regular panelist on Match Game. Also, "cock roach" is derogatory slang for the French.
Schultz carrying a Model 96 Krag instead of a Mauser was always strange. The Krag sticks out like a sore thumb with it's side loading receiver (easily seen in many shots of Schultz holding his rifle). I know this observation isn't anything new
Some of my favorite things of the show were the tree stump that had the passageway to the tunnels and the most comical Periscope that came out of the water barrel
Did u know that Bob Crane kept putting photos of Francine York on the bunk bed walls because he had a crush on her? She was my fb friend may she rest in Peace.
Even as a kid I thought it was an insult to anyone who suffered captivity under the nazis, I new many WW2 vets. Something important that seems to have been forgotten, Kempler played Eichman in a Israeli made biopic that was released at the same time as the trial, He played the role refused any money,
Man, I'd like to see a reboot of the series, but sticking to the spirit of the original series, not making it "woke" like "Hold on, we can't have Hogan kissing all the women like in the original" or stuff like that. It would ruin a reboot, if people would do it without this original laissez-faire style.
I am under the impression that the show did no take themselves seriously . the whole show is a joke. so the using the same actor for different rolls, referring to things things were done as hidden jokes (easter eggs) for those who paid attention to such things.
Second to Hogan, my favorite character was "Major Hochstetter" and how seriously his character took himself! Funniest episode was when Col. Clink and General Burkhalter walked into the camp jail and found Lebeau dancing with Major Hochstetter as Lebeau was teaching him how to dance. That scene still cracks me up laughing!!
As a kid and the son of a WWII vet, I never understood how it could be considered "comical" to show a POW Camp. Nor did my Dad. In POW camps it was pretty tough going, what was funny about that? I have a friend, his Dad was a flyer and his Dad was a POW in Poland (or it's Polish territory after the war) I think is where he was.I KNOW that it wasn't as bad as the POWs in Japanese controlled camps were, but it gets pretty cold in Europe, and they had little food. Plus, the guards played games with the Red Cross packages that were often the only food that they had, especially towards the end. It seems to me that perhaps twenty years after any war, there is this rather strange nostalgia. But is terrible. It's beyond my comprehension and frame of reference that some of the actors had families murdered in the death camps, and wear the enemy uniform and be inna comedy. Even less so when you see relative names in the archives. By the name, it simply says for the fate: "Went East."
Shultz playing ignorant to the hero's activities was indirectly explained in the episode War Takes a Holiday. He owned Germany's largest toy factory, taken away from him to be used for the war. Not being part of the Nazi Party, it is assumed he received little to no compensation.
I, as a German, love the original version the most. The version truly is too silly, and I therefore don't really like it. I guess many of the original jokes and dialogues would get lost in translation. A German stalag where even Germans within themselves speak English. To me, that itself is funny. But also the obvious fake locations, the cooler, for instance, doesn't look German at all. Also, many of the houses and facades truly are American. ❤😂
I remember one of the actors playing a "german soldier" was asked why he'd take the role as a Jewish actor, he said something like "the best way to fight fascism is to mock it".
Colonel Blackadder as Camp Commandant. But you'd need to fit in Sir Tony Robinson as Pvt. Baldrick somewhere. Baldrick would make a great Schultz. Nobody cares about Baldricks comments or ideas so he can know everything and it just be dismissed.
A good documentary ruined by a total lack of professionalism. Not bothering to get the cast’s names right is bush league at best and you should be ashamed of the result.
I can't believe his killer hasn't been found. Either the police were the Keystone cops in that town, or they were covering it up. Doesn't that guy seemed the perfect candidate to murder him? He had business with him that were not going to produce nothing but beans. If a person is counting on a business deal bad enough, couldn't he have killed him? Then, there's the blood in the car and this guy is found innocent? The detectives conducting the investigation must've been highly incompetent. He was the only guy with the perfect motive. He was probably killed in another place and the body brought to the flat. That would've explained the no struggle in the flat account. Too bad. This was one of my favorite shows. All of them were great actors. That's what made the show a hit, plus; the timing was perfect.
So many problems with this video regarding getting the details correct. Others have mentioned pronunciation errors, so I'll just mention that Burkhalter, Klink, and Schultz were NOT Nazis, they were Luftwaffe.
WTF! This video lost all credibility after mispronouncing and misspelling Werner Klemperer's name multiple times. Please allow someone who is familiar with the show do the narrating. It is obvious that the current narrator is reading from a script and has never watched the show.
There was only ibe episode tge featured thr gang with instruments. They were trying to cause an avalanche to block the Germans by playing loudly. Uf I remember correctly, ut didn't work but something else caused it instead
Love Hogans Heroes but my God if your gonna do a factual video like this learn to pronounce the names right and also misspelling names like Klemperer is horrible
It always remarked me how they had this endless supply of Nazi uniforms, particularly officer uniforms. Either they had somebody on the inside, making them for them or there was a lot of naked, my Nazi officers.😮

Fun stuff, thanks for sharing! Which episode of the show appealed to you the most?
Bob Crane - looked a lot like my dad.
Bet you're fun at parties 🙄
Good video. But I wouldn't say I was speechless. 😊
Sgt. Shultz (John Banner)
Wasn't that blonde on Hogans Heroes one of Bob Cranes conquests in real life? I might be wrong.
Sigrid Valdis played Helga for 5 out of 6 seasons yes they did get married
He married her
Shultz playing ignorant to the hero's activities was indirectly explained in the episode War Takes a Holiday.
He owned Germany's largest toy factory, taken away from him to be used for the war.
Not being part of the Nazi Party, it is assumed he received little to no compensation.
I know Nothing 😂🎸💯🇺🇸
I always thought Hogan's Heroes was based on the Film "The Password is Courage".
I've always loved this VERY FUNNY 👍😃😀👏❣️❣️❣️❣️
We're happy to know that you're a fan of Hogan's Heroes. Which episode is the most memorable for you?
I once heard that the road outside the camp with the
hill and the telephone poles are the same ones seen in the Andy Griffith Show...
Interesting, thanks for sharing this info! What other types of video would you like to see?
If this show was made today there would be a backlash from the Jewish and German community.
I remember one of the actors playing a "german soldier" was asked why he'd take the role as a Jewish actor, he said something like "the best way to fight fascism is to mock it".
Schultz was the best...always love him.
One of our favorites too, you've got fine taste! Who comes in at second place?
@@FactsVerse Hochstter believe it or not....
I want to see a 2 hour feature with Ryan Reynolds as Hogan, Rowan Atkinson as Klink and Jack Black as Schultz.
@@JohannSauer81 he is Lebeau
No. Don't ruin a good thing.
Don't forget don messic voice of dr Benton quest and ranger Smith in at least half a dozen eps.
A good documentary ruined by a total lack of professionalism. Not bothering to get the cast’s names right is bush league at best and you should be ashamed of the result.
Thanks for the constructive feedback. We'll do better next time 💗
Was just going to write a response alluding to this exact point. Thank you for mentioning this obvious and totally careless attitude on their part. 👍
Werner Klemperer was the most noticeable.
Lightin' up people...
Probably AI
I remember seeing an old film that had the same premises Hogan's Heroes
What did the Jewish and polish people think of it
It was on TV in West Germany in 1986
I thought it was based on The Great Escape. The tunnels had similar names.
Costarring those California telephone poles.
Comedy equals tragedy plus time. Many claim this as their own, however nobody really knows who said it first.
Does anyone know where the blueprint map of the camp which was behind Klinks desk ended up?
3:51 Airing in Germany 1992, albeit with numerous crazy changes
Your mis-pronunciations of some of the actors names lessened the entertainment value of the video. That's why I gave it a thumbs-down.
Isn’t it an AI voice?
I liked Carter
Free on prime…hogans hero’s
Ugh, that actor was not the voice of Fred Flintstone - he was the voice of Fred's Boss, Mr. Slate.
Thanks for the info! What other types of video would you like to see?
i always assumed the us government made this show on purpose to jester-ify de-fang their previous enemies and their legendaryness
The impossible timelines of Hogan getting across to London by air /submarine between night count and morning rollcall.

So many problems with this video regarding getting the details correct. Others have mentioned pronunciation errors, so I'll just mention that Burkhalter, Klink, and Schultz were NOT Nazis, they were Luftwaffe.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts! What other types of video would you like to see on our channel?
WTF! This video lost all credibility after mispronouncing and misspelling Werner Klemperer's name multiple times.
Please allow someone who is familiar with the show do the narrating. It is obvious that the current narrator is reading from a script and has never watched the show.
I wish they would have stayed with the Original opening Scene in the Pilot it was more dramatic
There was only ibe episode tge featured thr gang with instruments. They were trying to cause an avalanche to block the Germans by playing loudly. Uf I remember correctly, ut didn't work but something else caused it instead
We weren't allowed to watch it. My father fought in WW 2. He Said show made too light of the war
Interesting, thanks for sharing your life story. What other types of video would you like to see?
I like House MD
And Doc Martin (grumpy doctor)
Played by Martin Clunes. He is not as mean as Dr House
Why don't people leave other people alone.
It was Werner Klemperer not Klempner
The Prisoners weren't inept. There were shows not in winter
Rerun YT videos should be in B&W
Thanks for watching! We're glad to know that you love our video. What other types of video would you like to see on Facts Verse?
Love Hogans Heroes but my God if your gonna do a factual video like this learn to pronounce the names right and also misspelling names like Klemperer is horrible
along with not being able to hear Robert Clary's stunning words b/c of the bad audio.
It always remarked me how they had this endless supply of Nazi uniforms, particularly officer uniforms. Either they had somebody on the inside, making them for them or there was a lot of naked, my Nazi officers.😮
