'You left my top up on a pole’ | Frustrations from San Diego residents as trash cans are destroyed

- CBS 8 viewers in the City of San Diego continue to share their frustrations and their pictures of their trash cans destroyed by city garbage trucks.
“Every time they touch this garbage can, they do something,” said Sandra Castillo, who lives in Clairemont. The lid on her black bin went missing on trash day.
“I’m looking all over for this top, a day-and-a-half I’m looking for this top,” said Castillo.
The next day when she and her husband were still searching for the missing lid, they found it in a peculiar place.
“He’s like, ‘Look up.’ I’ll be darned if the top wasn’t all the way up on that pole,” said Castillo, who then called the City of San Diego’s Environmental Services.
“I said, ‘You left my top up on a pole. Can you come get it down?’ And he said, ‘No, you need to get it down yourself.’ I said, ‘I’m in my sixties, I’m not going to climb a telephone pole,’” said Castillo.
Fortunately, she flagged down a passing SDG&E truck, and got her lid down from the utility pole. She attached it back on the trash can with zip ties, but it fell right into the truck on the next trash day, so she asked the City for a replacement lid, but was told her garbage can was too old and that she’d have to pay for an entirely new one along with a delivery charge.

The city damaged this property, they are liable for replacement. The city workers are lying that it is the owner's responsibility. The trash service really should be sued for destruction of property.
YES! Collective...
the legal problem with that is that the bins are considered city property, not private property.
Government typically makes themselves immune from all liability, even though they forcibly extort money from us for these "services".
@@NavDDG54If that is the case, then they cannot claim you must buy it to replace.
@@dtoad48 you aren't buying it, you're reimbursing the city for damage to their property under your care
In rural Oklahoma, our trash contractor called us one afternoon to say his driver noticed our lid was cracking. Within a week, he was out to put a new lid on free of charge. So glad we live in a place where people still care about each other.
, yup ! , so many places turning into "screw over your neighbors" mentality
Same here in Utah
Wow, I hope you do not pay the exorbitant taxes and utility charges like those living in San Diego CA to deserve such stellar public services.

@@csmlouis LMAO. 🤑 YES, WE do; along with Exceptional Military. Nowhere NYC or Houston 🤪🇺🇸🤑
Those azzholes broke my black trash can, and the city made me pay $95 for a new one!!!! THEY BROKE IT, THEY SHOULD PAY FOR IT!!!
They use the robot claw trucks to cheap out on paying sanitation crews, only they cheap out on training them how to use them too. And on cheaper cans that break.
If you were an illegal immigrant the city would have a new can on your doorstep next trash day.
They clearly cheap out on the robot claws too
*Report them to the Supervisor in the Social Services Dept. of "The Housing Commission" in your City. They must refund the damaged trash cans, 'cause they're the ones that use them&abuse them, iresponsibly throwing them all over the place! Also, have them do an Anti-Dope Test😮

I'm still trying to figure out how that trash can lid ended up in a telephone pole. That's an amazing feat right there.
it probably flung up when the truck was maneuvering the trash into the truck .
Partially her fault I'd guess. She probably had her bin too close to the pole. When it lifted up it snagged on a climbing rung on the pole. People complain about the trash collectors being lazy and apathetic but home owners are as well. Place them properly and stuff like that would happen a lot less.
the machines flip the cans up, if the lid is loose it'll end up in the foyer or yes even the roof of the house across the street. I've found lids in the yard that way too. Once even a massive pile of beer bottles, recycling stuff goes in the recycling bin, put it in the trash bin and without a bag and that truck slings it... we all suffer
she had someone do it so she could force a new one out of the woke ass city, and do not blame her.
I see things fly all over all the time in my truck 🤣
“No, you need to get it down yourself” 😂 city employees get paid good and still not wanting to do their job right. I don’t even know to laugh or get mad now 😂
City employees don't make that much.
@@OregonCrow They may not make as much but atleast they have great benefits for example affordable living compare to other people that have to work 2 jobs to make ends meet.
Yea they also went to school and worked hard for their position. Working 2 jobs and still not making ends meet is cry baby bullshit. If you still aren't getting by while working 2 fulltime jobs, you suck at life and need help.@@Guest2022_
@@OregonCrowNot an excuse for doing a bad job. If they are unhappy with their pay they should take it up with the management, not out on the customers.
@@psibug565 Easy for those who don't work those kind of jobs to say.
These should be free of charge, only charge for services. Over time it will degrades, though from appearance those bins do look cheaply made.
They are 😢
yea you want it all for free. lol
Well, they should be included in the fees for garbage collection for a reasonable lifespan (that they contractually hold their manufacturer responsible for maintaining) since they won’t collect the garbage from anything but these bins that they sell you. But if you just make them “free”, people like @OregonCrow up there would just destroy them to mock the city services and complain about how they’re wasting your tax dollars.
@@OregonCrow he never said he wanted it all free everyone pays monthly for trash pickup if you own a house the trash can replacement should be free if its broken
@@OregonCrow You from Whoregonianville...piss off.
Growing up we had 6 big metal trash cans. Made the worst noise draging those 100 pound cans up and down the driveway. The metal lids were always flattened by the mailman. Good times. 😂
Then the cardboard ones 😅
They’re doing this where I live in Az…come to find out it was intentional, they were wanting to replace bins for smaller ones …which residents obviously don’t want.
They barely hold enough to make it to trash day as it is
Stop pissing off the garbage man, I guess!
I was just going to say this isn't accidental it's intentional.
The trash guy picked up the trash bin with his machine & smashed the trash on top of my car hood breaking my headlight. The damage was over $2000.
😱
Sue the city. They'll fire him after that.
Uh, our county in Georgia uses the same collection system. You know what, they have not destroyed the containers nor acted in the same manner. They own the trash bins, we don't.
Same system used all over the state with same good results. Thank you for, once again, making my state look good. These are all operator caused problems. VOTE then have your freshly elected folks fire the company doing this, there are many who will do a good job and remember you are the customer not a victim.
👍🏼
Not the drivers fault at all. They have the grip turned up way to high on those trucks. They also used cheaper plastic.
I'm amazed this could happen in the same city that pays $1 million dollars annually to clean feces off the street. With all the trash littering the sidewalks of San Diego anyway, it seems like they would just forego the bins and just throw their garbage into the alley.
Wow. San Diego can't even handle trash collection?
Wth did he had to do for that lid to end up wayyy up there 😂😂
@@YeeHaww scared by a crackhead?!?! I don't know, but that's not where a lid goes! 🤣🤣🤣
liberal cities can't handle much of anything, except being corrupt.
P.S. The City of San Diego needs to replace some of these old bins!!!
The RESIDENTS of San Diego need to replace their local GOVERNMENT
You know here in Austin, Texas. When yours gets old, they'll bring you a new one... And you don't have to pay
same here in Georgia...
Same across America
Quit bragging
It must be a CA thing when it comes to "doing the right thing" in the trash world.
Yeah but ur property taxes are way higher son..and those bugs 😅
That guy with the older trash bin is pretty lucky; the trash bins available nowadays have an (optimistic) 10-year lifespan. We replaced our black/household trash bin a couple of years ago--the fee was 60 or 70 dollars, plus the delivery fee (maybe $15 or $20? You can avoid the delivery fee if you're willing to drive down to Environmental Services and pick it up yourself). Fortunately, our trash guys are pretty careful, though those metal "grasping arms" on trucks will sometimes gouge our bins.
My city brings a new one out the same week free of charge
Why should you have to pay for the trash can? Your taxes pay for trash service. The cans ARE FOR the trash collectors convenience not yours. If they didn’t provide the cans the trash company would have to pay a guy to ride on the back of truck to P/U the trash collection you’re already paid for in your taxes.
Ours are free, including delivery where I reside
😮 Those freaking FEES, explains it ALL! The trashy irresponsible employees are probably getting a commission. So they bang them & abuse them, as shown on the Video 😵
I'm up in Riverside county, just had 2 bins replaced for free with no delivery charge, what the hell is going on in San Diego?
San Diego does not bill for trash services and because it doesn’t charge, it must keep a revenue stream incoming so charging customers for new containers is justified to ESD. They will soon start billing though with the promise of free new trash bins and delivery for free.
@philvie,
San Diego City management has turned "America's Finest City" into a poster child for a Third World County.
Fed up with the nonsense!!!
Out here in the "slums" of Spring Valley, we have a choice of waste pickup companies. I chose EDCO. They will replace a damaged bin at no charge within a week of getting a call.
Oh, look what they did to poor Ernie, he'll never be the same.
That's what happens when you have jobs for life where you're not accountable. Add to that these operators don't give a sh*t about the quality of their work.
@@whackamole4909 No. I'm talking about the aholes that work in sanitation - for the city or contracted. This no-care attitude has been happening forever - regardless of who the mayor is. I remember this same sh*t happening since the 1980s.

No…this is the reality of the American consumer. This is just one aspect of many in which consumers have no control of their consumer lives.
I see them do this all the time!!!!! And I know they hear it!!!
😍
The same exact thing happened to my dad. The lid was stuck on a rung.
He called the city and got some half baked answer explaining why they won't come get it down.
It was up there for a few months until SDGE saw it.
I'm surprised not one mention of the ballot measure we passed that headlined, "free trash bin replacement".
It was the carefully crafted words that ultimately succeeded in getting us to pay double for our trash service under the guise of us not really paying,
and for doing so, you will get free replacement trash cans just for asking. The new billing has not yet started but are they holding out on free replacements?
That's when you phone your city councilor, at home, at 11PM, and tell them to get their azz over there and get the lid down off the pole
WTH is wrong with people?
BEE NURSE . Always been a problem.
haha these guys work hard but damn city workers DGAF.. government workers and city workers are absolutely unbelievable.
These gentleman do what their bosses tell them, same as everyone, and their job is trash pickup. You want more out of them then tell their bosses
@@twinkslammer I am sure their bosses already tell them not to damage property
Found a loop-hole in my local regulations.. they said my can was too old, but I showed them that I only had the house since 2019.. and the regulations are how long the customer had the trashcan, not how old the can is.
Didn’t know SD was this ratchet. Always wanted to visit but thanks for saving me the trip.
So thankful for our awesome trash service workers in our area (obviously not San Diego). They jump out and handle the cans by hand. One time a guy sat one down too hard and made the wheel a little wobbly and they came back by later to replace it. Never knew how good I had it.
let me guess now they will come after her for code violations unless they buy a new one .
I live in Las Cruces, New Mexico. If our bins get damaged we call the city and they bring out a replacement, no charge.
Jeez.. I thought we had it bad up North with the snowplows taking out our garbage cans (and mailboxes) but this is next level o.o how are they not held responsible?
This is what happens when governments give businesses monopolies.
No. This is what happens when a nation fosters a culture of “if you don’t hold me accountable, I’ll do whatever vile, reprehensible thing I can think of to you and anyone else for as long as I can get away with it or pay anyone to look the other way.”
@@babybirdhome
Because of government granted monopolies.
Winter Garden, FL here. When my exact same trash can had a cracked lid they brought me a new one for free and there was no delivery charge. I pay around $49 a month for water and trash pickup. California looks SOOOOO lovely! Almost forgot, we have automated pickup too and they never break the bins. That driver was doing that on purpose. Working for you? You didn't fix anything!
New York, Chicago, and California. Well run, happy citizens, care free living, great public services.
You didn’t SOLVE anything or get any answers!! What was the point of this story?
It let's people know how bad government can be. Might start a movement to make San Diego government take resonsibility for their actions.
Why do you have to pay separately for the bin? I’m a waste management customer the bin is owned by waste management and when it breaks they come out and deliver a new one.
that is how it is done in Macon-Bibb, Georgia. Guess SD can't figure that one out...
What happened to those poor people is complete "trash".
I am crying tears of laughter. This report hit my funny bone. I'm laughing, hysterical. Not sure why it struck me so funny. Haven't laughed like this in years. Thanks you CBS 8 San Diego.
Stand outside and watch in person a few times they will catch on and start treating your bin better
Yup. This stuff happens all the time. Always broken!
Where I live, the garbage service owns the cans, which are made of super heavy-duty plastic and easily last more than 15 years. But when you have problems with it, you just let them know and they’ll bring you a new one, no questions or hassles.
Just ain’t right..
Need to bring Michael Turko out of retirement
That’s weird I have Burrtec and when my lid even gets a crack on it I just call and they bring a new one for free
not surprising really, for a country where the military is more important then infrastructure & healthcare & education together 🤷♂
When are we (California taxpayers) going to say enough?! This state takes... takes... takes--it's time we hold them all accountable.
*Advice from a Certified Real Estate Property Manager: Report them to the Supervisor in the Social Services Dept. of "The Housing Commission" in your City. They must refund the damaged trash cans, 'cause they're the ones that use them&abuse them, iresponsibly throwing them all over the place! (Take *discrete videos.) Also, ask the H.C. Supervisor to order an Anti-Dope Test to these employees, it could be the problem...😮
*Can you imagine the trash collectors in PA, Seattle WA, or Skid Row in Los Angeles... *Free Show 😂...
since they have gone to these robot arms and a single bin for trash, our town has never been dirtier. Trash flies all over, most famlies can't fit all the trasin one bin so they now dump trash at parks and rivers and shopping plazas. What a mess.
That's what dirty immigrants do, who are used to living in squalor, in their home country.
Her trash can lid is charging..
The Cty.Of S.D.'s trash svc. employees need to be more respectful to the citizens that pay their check s. The trash pickers abuse & mistreat trash cans. Otherwise, they need to be given a "Pink Slip." Seniors are on a *Strict Retirement Budget* and not responsible for their irresponsibilities. An immediate investigation is needed to determine if the "Trashy Employees" are on DRUGS 🤬
WOW. Just, WOW.
Los Angeles Sanitation is a joke... I place bulky large items that people discard illegally by my town home complex, and because it's not exactly on the curb side, they refuse to pick up... I have to email them with threats telling them I would let the mayor and other city officials know, and then they'd appear. Plus they wouldn't pick up other extra bins as well. The employees of sanitation don't even get out of their vehicles in this city... becoming lazy smh 🙄😒
The trash company replaces ours whenever they wear out. Someone drove into mine once. It wasn't even broken, just dented. the next week I had a new one. When the city changed trash services, they brought us new cans with the trash company logo on them. and told us they won't empty anything except those cans
they destroy it and you get to pay for it WTF
Working for you and Claremont that’s what the newscaster said at the end but you didn’t do anything you didn’t get any results you just reported a story, so how is that working for you? As you stated it didn’t work for those residents because they got no results
Does anyone believe the trash truck driver is responsible for her lid being up on the pole?
"The bin is too old, you have to pay for a new one" Makes me wonder if they make the same excuse for the bin being too new.
“Workin’for you” what exactly is CBS 8 doing to solve these issues? I think he meant, reporting on the situation. 🙏💪🌍🌎🌏❤️🇺🇸🖖
I am glad in Los Angeles the bins are rented out by the city, so it's replaced free of charge.
Try wrapping the can with packing tape. I kept my lid together with packing tape. There is also a youtuber that show how to mend plastic with Styrofoam and crazy glue. It works, fixed some stuff already.
I’m in Bakersfield and I remember last year when my mom had hers accidentally dropped into the garage truck itself. It was replaced few days later at no charge.
Would not happen if people would follow the instructions on placing their trash/recycling bin. There must be 3 feet clearance on both sides for the truck to effectively pick it up. Only about 10% of my neighbors follow the directions.
I gotta get it down from the top of the pole myself?? Ok, where's my chainsaw...
The garbage truck drivers around my house are absolute animals😢
Trash bins have not been and never will be free. In Australia, councils will include a fee for collection of the trash bin on the rates notice issued to the property owner on record. Replacing a bin is done only when the company handling the bins receives a report from the owner that their bin is broken in some way and needs a replacement. I'm not sure if the American authorities do things in a similar manner, but I'm pretty sure they would have a fee shown somewhere if you have a rates notice issued to you.
Here in Sydney Australia the bin belongs to either the Council, or the Council's contracted waste collector. So if your bin is damaged, you report it to the council, (email or phone call), then you make sure the bin is empty, leave it out on the curb, (I turn mine upside down and tap a note to the side), and the bin will be repaired or replaced. It may take a few days but it will be done. At no direct cost.
If that's the least of your worries in that city your blessed
Lady, so well said. Including about the roads. Trucks won't be helping that.
This is just upsetting how people can be so selfish on their jobs. Those workers should have been fired for their negligence.
That container is indeed too old. They no longer make those carts. The customer should've replaced it long ago. Then this wouldn't have happened
Egs are. Broken to
That is just deplorable! The City should just be embarrassed! Although, I doubt they would be!
I find it so strange that someone from the trash service would put the lid on that pole
I WANT JUSTICE!
We need to take this to the Supreme Court.
We have similar issues, only our city does replace them if I call. I don't worry about stink because I compost. All food scraps (except bones and eggshells) go into my compost pile. I also have a compost drum. The drum works better but won't hold bigger yard trimmings.
Home Depot sells those cans. Probably a better quality one than SD garbage provided.
!
Why does Riverside county take care of their residents better than San Diego county? 😂😂😂
Thank God I live in Texas. Our trash service is awesome. They put our cans right back where they are supposed to go , they are on time, and it is cheap as well.
What’s going on all over Southern California the trash companies are lacking a lot lately.
company should pay for the damages it did to the cans, not the customers. the lid of my can is half destroyed, in part because of how people dont care about you or me anymore.
I like the screwdriver hack to fix the lid.
Ahhhhhh revenue stream!!! I bet that the garbage collectors are incentivized to “gently handle” the cans like in the video. And just like the city said, the owners will have to pay if they need replacement cans, made with deficiently cheap plastics, until those cans get destroyed by the collectors….and the cycle of life is complete kids!! Hakuna matata everyone!! 💥👊😆💥😘🤌
Can they all file a class action lawsuit for this?
Everyone needs to take time off and get together to file a class action lawsuit!
They should name the blue recycler "Bert".
Having 3 bins is just dumb... We use to have one and were forced to have 3 now instead of one truck showing up 3 trucks show up making all kinds of noise starting at 6am..
Im hollering i live in Arkansas now and when i live in California the bins where absolutely horrible 😂😂 its cheaper just to load up the trash and take it to the dump😂
Not just San Diego I’m up in Northern California and the trash company here has broken 3 of my bins and I’ve had to pay for get them replaced
Glad i got the good sence to leave Ca after graduating high school....
“Working for you”… all you did was report a story. Where is the interview with the waste management company, footage of you asking city council why they are allowing this to happen, speaking with the mayor and getting a response on what plans the mayor’s office is considering to remedy the issue? Most news “action” or “investigation” teams would be out following the trucks, documenting damage and confronting the workers doing so on location as it happens. “Working for you”… what a joke!
Good comment!
Our local media is a joke.
it’s a lot tougher to fight the government over these kinds of things than it is if a were a company.
but at end of the day .. people are people.
In my city if we have a damaged lid or container theyll cone out within a week and replace it FREE OF CHARGE. Youll see these work trucks w recycle and regular bins as well as like 20 lids all in stacks once a week to be replaced. I cannot believe being a homeowner and have to deal w this and i couldn't do anything about it
The duct tape! Lol 😂
As soon as you hear "Buy a new can and Pay for a Delivery Fee" you know why this is happening.
Burrtec (San Bernardino County) actively notes and replaces damaged cans. random collection days you will roll the can out for collection and roll back up a new can.
(1:41) Kyle Brandon over at Kensington is The Real Hank Hill
My can was recently replaced. The city I live in replaces them after a time because they do fall apart. It's part of the trash services. Now if you break it before that time you'll have to pay but the cans in this report are clearly old and that's why they are falling apart. Years of being outside in the sun will do that. The city should be replacing them.
Why should they pay for a new can when the garbage people will completely break the new ones too. It’s obvious this breakage was done on purpose and the workers should be held accountable and punished for it. And the fact they put her lid up there on purpose and wouldn’t get it down is infuriating…..all that participate in these actions should lose their jobs…and all those who ordered it done should lose theirs too.
Eddco is better, we don't have are trash cans trashed or thrown on the lines😛
Yup, out here outside of the city in County land... EDCO is the best.
I used to live in the backcountry and use EDCO. Paying about half that now but I always thought EDCO’s service and people were very good.
They destroyed one of our recycling bins, took it away, and we haven't seen it since. (Nor Cal)
The sound of a trash can on wheels is San Diego's official song.
Doesn’t it say right on the cart that is city/county property? Usually you only pay a fee for an extra cart the initial cart delivered for service is assigned to the property address and is the garbage company’s responsibility. Been a mechanic at garbage companies since 1990 and the only reason those carts are damaged is either mechanical or driver error!
Who cans do these legally belong to? The City supplied them to the household, so the household owners own them.
