gotta say, i watched chilleds perspective, i watched galms perspective and for some reason, your perspective seems to be a lot more relaxing and nice i had a thought that it would be nice if you tuned down the unhappy voices of the less fortunate and/or maybe replace them with some soothing music, i understand that it would not be that good of a video by itself, but it would be a hilarious side by side perspective with the rest of the crew :D
Tom is really good at this game, since he never stopped playing since the standard version came out on Wii U. He's also just plain lucky with items during these recording sessions. He does face tough competition when he streams with fans: they tend to have some people on Tom's level in every race, and his luck doesn't always carry over
He and I have roughly the same lines on the courses, and I've triple-starred everything and generally have I commanding lead against Hard COMs unless RNG _really_ fucks me and the stars align for all the random bullshit to hit me in a calculated manner. I also have all the TT Nin ghosts beaten - including the BS Mario Circuit and Ribbon Road ones on 200cc - and I got my start from seeing Tom's earlier MK8 vids (mainly for getting the idea for drifting before even getting the game), and it evolved from there as I played myself. I'd say that he's definitely good. Even his older vids where he wasn't as good helped me to get the hang and get really good. Playing on Frantic and/or Baby Park is a huge hinderance for me because Frantic is a detriment to people who frontrun and Baby Park is a no-skill RNG hell. If I play with Bananas only or no items, the lead gap between 1st and 2nd can be about half a lap. That depends on how you view Hard COMs. but that gives you an idea. COMs are easier in a multiplayer room for some reason, but you often see Tom super far ahead of them. He's pretty good at frontrunning, where the racers behind him keep getting further behind because they're stuck in fuckville. I see this happen a lot myself, but it takes skill and good item use/management to frontrun. Since they're in Frantic, I can say that getting defensive items in 1st isn't uncommon. It's 100% guaranteed when you grab a double item box, because double Coins don't happen in Frantic. If I have a Coin item, I won't use it right away even if I need coins. I'll save it until I touch another item box so that it forces a non Coin item to appear when I'm in 1st. I also like having a Coin as my active item so it's Boo bait. I've had so many Boos steal my active item that I hate having a Horn in the active slot. I'll farm item boxes until I get a Horn in the back slot so I have pretty guaranteed insurance from a Blue Shell (aside from Lightning or needing to defend from Triple Red Shells). A Mushroom also works for a Blue Shell, but then it comes down to "Do I use my Mushroom for this shortcut and guarantee a small time save, or hold onto it - risking it being stolen by a Boo or Lightning'd away - for the chance to save even more time by dodging a Blue Shell if it comes or to regain my acceleration after getting hit by any other item so I can try to farm for more defensive items and maybe a Horn?". If I have 2 items - 1 being a Coin - and a defensive item is my active item, I'll often use it before hitting a single item box for the chance of a better defensive item. Since I already have a Coin item, it forces a defensive item anyway, and this also moves the Coin to my active item slot and my defensive item to the back, so it can't get stolen by a Boo. Though, I've had a Boo steal my defense literally 3 frames before I got hit by a Red Shell, so even doing your best to save your defenses for when absolutely necessary doesn't always work. So there is a bit of luck that goes into it, but also a lot of skill in management. Tom doesn't always have the best/most optimal item management, but he does for the most part, and that coupled with his racing ability is why he has a commanding lead in 1st place finishes compared to the rest of the Derp Crew. I've been fucked by Coin items a few times after having to play a lot of defense (there's been a few races I still somehow finished 1st after being hit by a Blue Shell THREE times, either from crap item draws of having to blow my Horn on other stuff), but still Tom's items aren't too far from the norm of what Frantic gives you.
