How lucky you are to have heard her in person. She is without question one of the unsung hereos of the piano and, to my ear, the Beethoven interpreter - in the Appassionata, 12 and 32 nobody else comes close.
I remember walking from a recital of Magda Tagliaferro at the Wigmore Hall, London with the pianist Shura Cherkassky. Mr Cherkassky asked me after we had crossed Oxford Street who I ranked as a great Beethoven player. I took a while to answer, and said "Elly Ney." He said "Now you're talking!" Quite a compliment...
I was fortunate to hear Magda Tagliaferro in her last NYC recital. I don't recall the year. I recall that flaming red hair, dress split up the side, and spike heeled shoes. She was amazing. Christopher Reeve sat behind me, but left at the intermission.
Such an honest, unpretentious way of making music; adorable! That's what our world needs at our time!
What a great pianist is Elly Ney!!!! Even at 82 years old her performance is stunning. ❤❤❤

I've never heard it played better and I doubt it has ever been played with more meaning.
