Riding a bike like that to work every day in New York City Traffic,Albeit a 1930's 45 flathead Definatelely will cure a person of looking at the shifter. The non Constant mesh transmission will only shift at certain rpm's and The brakes are slightly better than dragging your feet when applied too often, and obviously downshifting is not easy unless you have a ton of experience riding and develop an intuitive relationship with the machine, both as a rider and a mechanic. Old motorcycles are capable of going over 70 mph, but all the fork bushings better be lubricated well and often and wheels trued and balanced perfectly, bearings end played properly or your bug faced enjoyment will be interrupted by moments of sheer terror! A testament to the manufacturer that no brake parts broke facing immediately stopped traffic at 50 feet or the lack of a coronary infarction when one neglects to lube the Rocker bushings and springs and experience a first "springer death wobble " at 71 MPH. It is a blast to ride an old Harley, but not for the faint of heart, and it helps if you are an experienced lane splitter to avoid the afore mentioned 50 foot stopped dead Traffic , and diagnose and fix certain things that only experience can teach! Never tailgate a cab! if he stops short and you are upset, it is ok to catch up with him at highway speed and open the back door(always unlocked) and toss your lit cigar on his back seat. all these stupid no smoking regulations trigger these foreign cabbie guys nowadays! Rest assured your ancient Harley is way more agile than a pissed off cabbie, and although he may try to run you into a guard rail on a large bridge, the loss of his mirror, several dents, and a small fire in the back of his cab only adds to the Mystique and enjoyment as you split the air like a rocket, lane splitting like a pro! Ghosts of Board track racers cheer your way home! A cold beer and a reflection on how much more pleasant the trip home was than the trip to work was! True To Heart I love Riding these old Machines! Cheers! Peace! .
