Undoubtedly one of the greatest pianists of all time. Her clarity and tempi are just breathtakingly exquisite. Whoever remastered this 70+ year old recording deserves a prize.
Sitting in silence, closing your eyes, and listening to classical music can bring a sense of relaxation and depth. It's a fantastic way to escape the hustle and bustle of life and enjoy serenity.

I would remind some of the more senseless commentators that this is a reference audio document. It doesn't claim to be the definitive performance of Bach on piano. Marcelle Meyer is of the very best interpreters, for which I thank CMRR. This upload is a stellar addition to an already impressive catalogue (by CMRR) of beauty remastered for us all to enjoy.
Never heard of her til now yet glenn gould is a household name in any bach fans home. She's truer to bach in my opinion. She has sensitivity and you can hear the beauty of the piano itself. Gould imposed himself on bach and the piano. And sensitivity was almost completely absent. The monotony of his playing has often driven me to turn him off. Yet he is so celebrated. Bachs music in my opinion should have a sweet charm aswell as a towering monumentality. And no reason for these two qualities to be at odds with eachother.
Listening to this recording, there is no doubt that Marcelle Meyer truly respects and loves Bach. Here she is one with Bach. The sound is surprisingly modern.
When I heard her Partita No. 3, I was astonished. It contains all the emotion that Bach would have projected into this often underrated work (something directly related to the character of the piece itself). In most cases, it is something that most pianists, famous or not, foolishly overlook. Her playing is both melancholy and virtuous. She seems to occupy a major place in French Bach playing, along with Yvonne Lefebure.
Marcelle Meyer trained with Debussy on how to play her Preludes after meeting him when she made the debut performance of the Satie Parade in 1917. Meyer became Erik Satie's favorite pianist and debuted Francis Poulenc Sonata for four hands with the composer. She debuted several of her other works and recorded with him. In the early 1920s she played for Darius Milhaud and Stravinsky
Retrouvailles, merci.
@@afritimm Exactly George. You're on the right road I believe. All this comparison is seriously draining. Each one of us is unique and as real as anyone else. All wanting to love and be loved. All good things!
@@waterkingdavid Exactly!!! My favorite is when someone posts a compliment about an opera or any other performance and someone else then feels the need to point out how some other recording is actually better. Yeah, whatevs... I think that's missing out on one of the major joys of classical music.... each recording should be enjoyed for its unique virtues.
She plays Bach in a way I’ve never quite heard before. The Inventions are so very fluidly and elegantly pedaled. And, re the above comments speaking of Gould, who used very little pedal in Bach (ditto Angela Hewitt): well, I worship his (and her) take(s) on Bach-who doesn’t?-yet this is diametrically opposed to these approaches and works equally well-and sounds so very different. Gorgeous. Thanks for posting. I am a successful, professional pop musician; but I have put it aside in my late middle age, and have taken up playing classical piano, and am studying counterpoint and classical composition. I’m so grateful to finally understand-and love-Bach. And for musicians like me, to hear a master like Meyer play these “student” pieces is an enormous boon to all who are in my position.
Most beautiful excellency of perfection. The dynamics, the left hand , the rhythms, the prodigious speed, the expressions, the musicality. The interpretation, the question and answer, the tones, overtones, the richness. The colors, mastery of pedals. MYSTERIOUS!
Unglaublich !
I would add to my earlier comment to simply say that these recordings require repeated listening to fully apprehend. The beauty and subtlety of Marcelle Meyer's interpretation yields only with attention. The remastering is wonderful.
Absolutely wonderful, and I love these recordings without any reservations, even with their often surprisingly brisk tempi. Ms. Marcelle Meyer is to me a true revelation. Thank you for remastering and posting this.
The world treated me bad to not inform me about this genius before today! Anyone who performs Bach this flamboyant today will be laughed at, but it is done with so much spirit and good taste! It sparks joy. Thanks for uploading these refreshments.
It's not flamboyant in the least. Perhaps you should study historical performance practice in the context of university studies, to better inform your choice of inflammatory commentary.
"Anyone who performs Bach like this will laughed at"... Are you serious? I think you have no idea about current day trends re interpretations of Bach (or Handel or any other Baroque) keyboard works played on the piano. Do you think the reaction at Julliard of a 20 year old plating like this would be castigate him/her or praise them? Of course you miss the main point which is that there are precious few pianists who have played Bach so gorgeously in the last 75 years.
@@costanzomusicworld Thank you for being so provoked, Dennis. You have only one chance to prove your sarcasm and the right to advise what people are supposed to study if, for some rare case, you might see it. In short words - show your records. And please don't thank me for the bright idea!! he he )))
Would just like to add that the recording sounds were very different early-mid 20th century--don't have the technical background to explain, but the sound and ambience is unique to the period. Since that is 'my' period it brings back so many memories and these recordings of Marcelle Meyer's playing are just jewels. Thanks once again to Classical Music for all you give us.
Well said. Indeed I find sometimes an old record with scratches from long back can evoke emotions that far surpass near perfect present recordings on occasion.
2.202.23 On Dec.25, 2022, I was among 5 tenants burned out of an old house. I lost almost everything from smoke and water. That night the ground was covered in ice and snow..as the firemen sprayed the house, water froze within minutes. We stood watching to see if we could return inside...me with my cat and another tenant with her Weimaraner. I was homeless until 3 weeks ago. A fireman brought out my laptop where I listen to Marcelle Meyer play on this extraordinary recording that keeps me grounded and not crying. Meyer and Andras Schiff are keeping me alive.....
I would advise any student of piano to aspire to Meyer’s exquisite interpretation. She is thorough and artistic and not mechanical like many contemporary pianists.
I apologize, my comment was not recorded completely in previous comment. I was stating that Marcelle Meyer had been a great Bach piano interpreter and that this recording was nothing less than historic. Thanks.
Marcelle Meyer has achieved excellent interpretations of Bach, I've greatly enjoyed listening to her exquisite voicing, pedalling, singing tone and infusion of emotion into these timeless Bach classics,
Very grateful thanks to Classical Music/ /Reference Recording for this superb collection. A much underrated musician who should be better known. I wish I could have played the inventions with half the sparkle and energy that Meyer brings to them.
Thank you. She's one of my favorite interpret of Bach. Just lovely... Hm. No, I lie, apart of those tiny bijoux by Lipatti and maybe Sokolov, she is the ultimate, by far the most favorite pianist of mine.
I must share with anyone on here the incredible joy the inventions brought me one summer day: Debussy said of Bach's music, its simply 'never boring' and I might add mostly outrageously beautiful.... This music complemented and almost narrated my existence, or at least my experience lasting around 1 hour. The context is me in a picturesque fisherman-village cove-within-a-cove, where I used to go as a child but hadn't visited in 6 years. On the last day, after catching up with the people there, I set out to see the sun get swallowed by the sea from a viewpoint atop the small peninsula, that projects from the mainland like a fat piece of clay pulled from a larger chunk: the village houses (or mine at least) face this mountainous peninsula / with its remains of a 1500s Venetian castle. Rocky and lush, imposing and quiet, I escaped there for some contemplation as I had never done in my youth. As I was listening to the inventions, ascending the tree tunneled path, I resonated most with the desolation of the slower and more melancholic ones. The canopy blocked out the sun's declining rays, and the village was cast in shadow. Therefore, in addition to my fatigue from climbing the steep road, I suffered (just a little bit). I became a vessel, a living receptacle of the feelings the composer had imbued into those 'exercises'. But what comes up, must go down!. After turning off all music and meditating with the sunset, my mind was incredibly clear. Not that the ascending melancholy muddled me... on the contrary all thoughts had disappeared into a quivering, sweet melancholy of the sort that I imagine can only be known to humans (24:30). On this slight aside, therefore, I always retort to anyone claiming this music is 'divine'. Instead, despite its musical perfection, it is all too human in its content. But soon after that, much like what inventions like 5 or 6 do to me now, I felt a sort of sunlight cutting swathes within me and compelling me to do something. After clearing the jagged rocks and reaching a more palatable path, I met a couple worried about being on the mountain at night with the cold (talk about 'the wilderness') and did my best to direct them to the path. Immediately, urged by the music in the most inexplicable way (we 'listen' to music with our muscles) I sprinted downward. With the sunset's vermillon colors irradiating my neck and gilding the pine trees of the mountainback, I sprung, like a small sheperd excited about something he saw down by the sea (theres also a nice bach one in the xmas oratorio about a sheperd) and skipped along the path (like a hopscotch run, in Greek 'τσιγκολελετα'), carefree and unbothered by the deadly 30-ish meter drop looming to my right. I stopped every ten meters to look behind, greedy of the feast for the eyes before me, and blithe as a child receiving a treat but blushing from the soft touch of the woman that gives it to him. Jittery, but not worried, as I felt my breath giving me life and cooling me, I felt the purest of joys and completely at one with the mountain and everything around me. My joy was so great, my smile so broad, the sweat was so sweet I can still remember vividly, almost re-live, some aspects of that experience connected with these inventions. And I apologize, if you have read all this, for my inability to put into words what that memory FELT like (for that, read Joyce !) but I hope it gave you some insight, and illustrated why this music is a treasure of human experience and culture. And the reason is, it resonates so much with the most sublime of human joy and sorrow.
Listening to these pieces played by Glenn Gould, I saw a commentator suggest we listen to these recordings here. I understand WHY now. Seems like Musicality can be different than Virtuosity, although one can be expressing both at the same time. I'm just an amateur listener and not even a player, but learning nonetheless about how the language of music is spoken. Very profound experience! Thank you fellow readers when you have constructive comments like the one bringing me here. Otherwise, save your snobby critiques about players (and even pianos!) for your own cocktail parties :)

I remember still your marvelous upload with music of Rameau with Marcelle Meyer, and now this jewel : Marcelle Meyer and J.S.Bach, thank you very much!
Magnifica!!
Further listenings confirm: this is wonderful stuff. The best Italian Concerto I've ever heard, it trumps all, and I have a great many recordings of this fabulous work on both harpsichord and piano. Very real, full of life, mercurial, not too beautified, and with perfectly judged tempo throughout. Masterful! (or should that be mistressful?)
What a discovery !This is a perfect melting pot of Bach keyboards various masterpiece, and what a treat ! This interpretation is coming from an age closer than Bach life than we are ! Artist of this time was more dedicated to their art for the reason that they had time to play and to create. There will never be a second Bach (who was composing a cantata (each week) and such a devoted pianist , both are coming from an older age when people took time to create and to try to reach the perfection, and not loose time to write as I do, but I'm just an average guy of our time and not a genius as you are Madame Meyer and Herr Bach !!! Merci und Danke

Is there any place we can go to get the exact dates for the recordings? Thanks.

Sitting in silence, closing your eyes, and listening to classical music can bring a sense of relaxation and depth. It's a fantastic way to escape the hustle and bustle of life and enjoy serenity.
Marcelle Meyer is probably the greatest French pianist of the 20th century. All these recordings are of exceptional historical and educational value. Millions of pianists around the world are learning Bach's Inventions.. They are essential works for piano training. As the great teachers often say, it is much easier to play melodic lines at full speed and impress the audience than to make several voices sing well. Marcelle Meyer excels technically but above all musically. It is impressive how she has been able to combine fluidity of play and expressiveness. It is the letter absolutely reproduced. The letter, but also the spirit..

Sorry. She indeed does #play melodic lines at full speed #. Not my taste.
Merci de partager.
Concerning Gould, I didn't last long enough to have an opinion on his playing; at the first humming, it was over for me.
Extremely elegant, exquisite, noble Bach I’ve ever heard before! She’s a real jewel. my god.
Yes, wonderful empathy and humanity throughout these pieces...
GOD is listening!😁
She was a creative goddess for sure!
Absolutely ❤
Une tres belle avant-garde.
Thank you! 😁
I never tire of listening R. Meyer's interpretaron of Bach. It brings to my mind the imagen of his broad approving smile...
I confirm she was my favorite pianist.
I, too, have Wikipedia.
everything is Bach, Bach is everything ❤️
This is such a treasure. Marcelle Meyer was Brilliant !
I start each day listening to Marcelle Meyer - Bach in these recordings. Thank you so much for this gift.
And I used to think Glenn Gould captured it well, but this is otherworldly.thank you.
We don’t have to choose. That’s the joy of great music and great interpreters.
Gould followed Roselyne Tucker, not Marcelle Meyer
Most beautiful excellency of perfection. The dynamics, the left hand , the rhythms, the prodigious speed, the expressions, the musicality. The interpretation, the question and answer, the tones, overtones, the richness. The colors, mastery of pedals. MYSTERIOUS!
She's a creative goddess for sure!
For decades I thought Gould was the gold standard of Bach keyboard but not now
An angel playing the work of a genius.
I am swept away. What a blessing to have access to her talent
Speechless...she's not merely playing the piano, but an organ, a harpsichord and a baroque orchestra at the same time!
Unglaublich !
I would add to my earlier comment to simply say that these recordings require repeated listening to fully apprehend. The beauty and subtlety of Marcelle Meyer's interpretation yields only with attention. The remastering is wonderful.
I didn't know it would be this beautiful when I played the Bach Inventions when I was a kid.
Absolutely wonderful, and I love these recordings without any reservations, even with their often surprisingly brisk tempi. Ms. Marcelle Meyer is to me a true revelation. Thank you for remastering and posting this.
She plays everything more briskly than anyone else. And it always works beautifully, and it is always so enjoyable!!
The world treated me bad to not inform me about this genius before today! Anyone who performs Bach this flamboyant today will be laughed at, but it is done with so much spirit and good taste! It sparks joy. Thanks for uploading these refreshments.
Flamboyant?
It's not flamboyant in the least.
Perhaps you should study historical performance practice in the context of university studies, to better inform your choice of inflammatory commentary.
non-intentional & sincere use of bad semantics "flamboyant"
And please don't thank me for the bright idea!! he he )))
Her rendition of the Fantaisie is absolutely breath taking! What a stunning piece of music.
A revelation! I love her playing. So clean and unaffected.
Yes, yes, yes! It brings a smile to my whole being.
Just now, First time hearing, and “Clean” is the exact word that came to mind too
Would just like to add that the recording sounds were very different early-mid 20th century--don't have the technical background to explain, but the sound and ambience is unique to the period.
Thanks.
What al lively playing style ! That is Bach as we like .
Marcelle Meyer has achieved excellent interpretations of Bach, I've greatly enjoyed listening to her exquisite voicing, pedalling, singing tone and infusion of emotion into these timeless Bach classics,

Wholeheartedly agree ...timeless indeed
Like Beethoven's later works ....
All my love for the amazing Marcelle.
The best with Gould and Richter.
Wow. I can say i finally understood some of these pieces after this execution....
🌟 Lovely music played by a lovely lady from the past 🌟

Yes, yes. yes- exquisitely uplifting
Yes I agree
I pick up here intuitively how Beethoven's later works have these influences of Bach
Just truely amazing 💞

Wonderful playing---finally, someone who plays Bach with some feeling!
Elegant and superb
Very grateful thanks to Classical Music/ /Reference Recording for this superb collection. A much underrated musician who should be better known. I wish I could have played the inventions with half the sparkle and energy that Meyer brings to them.
So lovely, so peaceful, so joyous...what a treat.
It seems to hear the sound of cheerfully flowing mountain streams, so beautiful
"cheerfully flowing mountain streams" - I like that image. Very poetic.
Just gorgeous... you can hear Cortot's exquisite sensibility...just gorgeous...
Un oceano di bellezza.
Quelle merveilleuse découverte!
Simplicité, pureté, élégance, imagination, présence. Et l'air de rien!
Merci.
Thank you. She's one of my favorite interpret of Bach. Just lovely... Hm. No, I lie, apart of those tiny bijoux by Lipatti and maybe Sokolov, she is the ultimate, by far the most favorite pianist of mine.
We are enjoy them all! and not have to have a favourite.
As I was listening
to the inventions, ascending the tree tunneled path, I resonated most with the desolation of the slower and more melancholic ones. The canopy blocked out the sun's declining rays, and the village was cast in shadow. Therefore, in addition to my fatigue from climbing the steep
road, I suffered (just a little bit). I became a vessel, a living receptacle of the feelings the composer had imbued into those 'exercises'. But what comes up, must go down!.
After turning off all music and meditating with the sunset, my mind was incredibly clear. Not that the ascending melancholy muddled me... on the contrary all thoughts had disappeared into a quivering, sweet melancholy of the sort that
I imagine can only be known to humans (24:30). Immediately, urged by the music in the most inexplicable way (we 'listen' to music with our muscles)
I sprinted downward. With the sunset's vermillon colors irradiating my neck and gilding the pine trees of the mountainback, I sprung, like a small sheperd excited about something he saw down by the sea (theres also a nice bach one in the xmas oratorio about a sheperd) and skipped along the path (like a hopscotch run, in Greek 'τσιγκολελετα'), carefree
and unbothered by the deadly 30-ish meter drop looming to my right. I stopped every ten meters to look behind, greedy of the feast for the eyes before me, and blithe as a child receiving a treat but blushing from the soft touch of the woman that gives it to him. Jittery, but not worried, as I felt my breath giving me life
and cooling me, I felt the purest of joys and completely at one with the mountain and everything around me. My joy was so great, my smile so broad, the sweat was so sweet I can still remember vividly, almost re-live, some aspects of that experience connected with these inventions. And
I apologize, if you have read all this, for my inability to put into words what that memory FELT like (for that, read Joyce !) but I hope it gave you some insight, and illustrated why this music is a treasure of human experience and culture. And the reason is, it resonates so much with the most sublime of human joy and sorrow.
Exquisite, passionate, driven. And whoever remastered her work deserves plaudits. Your work is a godsend. Bravo!!

The best interpretation I’ve ever heard!
Thank you for this!!! I adore Meyer!

Magnifica!!
Superb performance; superb remastering.
absolutely beautiful music , the sensibility encouraging this woman in each note is so pacific and strange at the same time. thanks

Amazing....first time hearing here in Brazil. It's sounds like a "João Carlos Martins" playing Bach. They have the same joy! Thanks for this video.
