I was under the impression he was talking about a six pack of beer.
Guess my goals are somewhere else
Six pack comes with the need to be strong at core rather than actually needing one rather some may aesthetically WANT a six pack.
It’s amazing how far HIV therapy has come over the last few decades.
Yeah amazing... considering that the CIA developed AIDS and released it onto the gay population in 1978, it's surprising it took this long for them to starting figuring out how to stop it.
Omg I was watching this and in the background of my house the tv was on and there was a news cast talking about how a second person was cured of hiv

This video hits close to home for me. On December 13, 2013, I lost younger brother due to complications from HIV. He was only 28.
Doctor Mike is exceedingly respectful. I adore the man because of his kindness, knowledge, and goodwill!
OMG the biochem/cellular bio & medicine nerd in me is screaming YASSSS, I am so excited that you covered this story it’s astounding!
I love how excited you got about the Kinder Eggs😂
@@corab.8753 yeah someone complained about them being a choking hazard. Now US "kinder eggs" are separated length wise with an even more useless and fragile toy and the other being foil sealed with a chocolate mixture that you have to eat with a provided plastic spoon/spreader, not solid enough to eat with your hands.
I used to get kinder eggs as 20 years ago in Belgium. Usually they were pretty robust, and I still have many of them. The several US ones I've encountered have all broken before they went together. 😭
I am from Asia and kinder eggs are the best in the world I’m accuracy you will need the box without removing the rapper

Thank you for your efforts in promoting medical literacy. Medicine is such a highly specialized field that, short of trying to self-educatate (falliable) or go to med school yourself (expensive and time-consuming), there aren't a whole lot of opportunities for average people to gain the sort of knowledge that medical professionals have. So when you make these videos and you explain what terminology means, how things interact in your body, etc - you're bridging a huge gap in understanding. Your videos are such a valuable resource and I hope you continue making them for a long time. 🙂✌️
I work in the HIV field and I chose to watch this video to see how correct what you're saying is. I wanted to make sure that it wasn't "sensational" or full of half-truths. I was happy to hear you talk about the delta 32 mutations and CCR5 receptors. You went more in depth than I was expecting and made it easy to understand to a general audience, and this is a really great introductory video I could absolutely use to help teach people what happened in with the London Patient.
The absolute ONLY thing I would add is that like cancer, there are different "types" of HIV. Not every strain of HIV is connected to CCR5. There are other strains of HIV that aren't affected by CCR5. Basically this "cure" is only "effective" for people who have a particular strain of HIV (which is less than 50% of HIV+ people).
Pace Marshall the other thing that’s being left out of this case is the fact that after a bone marrow transplant patients are place on immunosuppressive medications. Most people with HIV have normal immune systems until AIDS develops. Knocking out someone’s immune system to prevent a virus from doing the same isn’t really a “cure”
Pace Marshall if you want a video that gives more details you can check out SciShow's video in this topic
You do no it's teens who watch this too and most wouldn't have a clue what he's on about. This isn't med school it's TH-cam
@@jaroevn honestly if you think you have enough symptoms to be placed on the spectrum then go to a doctor and have yourself evaluated. Looking on the internet can only do so much good.
My father had a bone marrow transplant for his Non-hodgkin's Lymphoma treatment. He had 50% of chance of dying in the first year from Graft vs. Host disease. He had to have both of hips replaced from steroid damage. A friend of mine Nathan had a bone marrow transplant for his leukemia. Instead of the high dose steroids attacking Nathan's hips; it attacked his spine. His spine collapsed on itself, and Nathan didn't make it.
I hope and pray for a cure for HIV and Aids, but I agree with Dr. Mike that there shouldn't be a rush to call this a cure. Bone marrow transplants are tremendously high risk treatments. I doubt it would work in under developed countries where people can't keep themselves from getting sick during that first year. I look forward to updates on this and whether or not it can be replicated. A treatment for HIV that can put in in remission is a step in right direction. I just would like one from which people in Africa, for example, can benefit as well.
Worry not luv. We're curing it with herbs. Takes anywhere from 6months to a year and no DNA mutations needed. When I was 6 or 7 a university professor in Edo state Nigeria cured about 11 people. He died mysteriously shortly after going public. Another one year's later also in Nigeria died shortly after going public with curing his patients. The one you've probably heard if is Dr Sebi, who also mysteriously died in police custody after winning court cases in New York. He had over 150 patients cured of several diseases including both HIV and full blown AIDS. But alternative medicine cannot be controlled by big pharma and they won't give up their billion dollar industry for plant medicine. Anyway, my point is, herbal medicine is doing quite well down here. No thousand dollar transplants needed.
@@ikoghoe i'm so shoked to hear about this 😵 and the fact that i'm almost finished with my medical studies not knowing about it is just sad, can u help me find more infos about the cases cured? Sites i can visit?
yeah don’t forget asian countries too. bc some of those are underdeveloped too
you are totally right. Bone marrow transpalnt is very dangerous. It should be indicated wisely. There are some studies that people after bone marrow transplantation (without Graft vs Host reaction) live shorter.
@@afrotina2780 I don't know that you can find anything about the first 2 I mentioned. It was over 20 years ago and record keeping over here is not the best. But there are lots of articles online about the last one. Just Google him and info and testimonials will pop up.
Dr. Mike, you make so much sense!
Wow this is what gives me hope for humanity thanks kinda needed this
I know nothing about this science stuff, but he explains it to the point where I understand, and you have to be an expert to do that
The language in the paper the researchers use is actually "long term remission!" the media has started calling it the "cure" so I agree with you about that!
Rose Lawson the cure is in nature don't listen to him he knows nonthing lots of people have cured there HIV on fruits clean water
King Kato no, it’s actually not called a cure by the actual researchers who did the study. He is right and he does know what he’s talking about. I am a research scientist, and would tell him otherwise if he was incorrect about something. HIV cannot be cured with fruits and water.
Rose Lawson “research scientist” is something anyone can call themselves, it’s very non-specific. if you really are a “research scientist” what do you research?
All of us need to keep listening such information and learning
Doctor mike: let's call him london patient
Me: I wonder if he's from London
I love that you spoke about it not really being a “cure” yet. I got my bachelors in genetics and my job is to do infectious disease testing by molecular methods.
Even if they found a way to block the CCR5 receptor, the patients would still have to take the drugs for the rest of their lives. However, it would still be a huge break through if they could make it work without any adverse affects to cellular response due to deactivated CCR5 receptors. Fingers crossed!!!!
"Even if they found a way to block the CCR5 receptor, the patients would still have to take the drugs for the rest of their lives."
Could explain why? As far as I understood it from an article, the London patient had stopped taking the drugs.
@@APHRODITEEEEEE dude, wtf? Why are you asking for some one else's personal identity? You (from what I've just read) don't even know this person. It's inappropriate, calm down.
Unless it's a joke, but try making it clear, your account can get banned/deleted for this.
And I know it's not my business.
@Gnuling, the London patient had a bone marrow transplant that had a mutation in the CCR5 receptor gene and the HIV virus couldn’t attach to it so that patient didn’t need to take antivirals. If scientists developed a drug to block the CCR5 receptor, it wouldn’t be a one time pill, permanent fix. The patient would have to take the receptor blocking drug for the rest of their life. I’m sorry, I should have explained better.
I imagine how medicine will look like in 100 years..

Timmy let's go get a vaccine against cancer so you won't get it!

Great video, thank you for being concrete about it rather than play on people's sensibility to hope...
I have been HIV+ and on arv medication for 3 years so far... it's going very well, but there's always the fear, what if all the accidentally missed doses (as rare as they are) would add up and cause the virus to become resistant... what if the suppressed viral load can still cause bodily malfunctions, especially that I'm a smoker and pretty much addicted to nicotine... what if the constant use of meds adds up to kidney failure or other disorders associated with constant use of meds over a long period of time... watching this give me hope that maybe someday I won't have to worry about these things anymore, so keep doing what you do, doc, I think I speak for everyone when I say I truly appreciate your content 😁

I love how Doctor Mike is not only informative but incredibly respectful he is by saying it’s not fair to those affected by HIV to call this a cure and because not everyone can be treated with a marrow transplant.
Casey Lynn 🙌🏻
Even worse, if you dont have any kind of cancer, this kind of treatment would leave you worse off that if you just took regulae HIV medicine. Yeah you wont be cured by it, but the transplant requires supression of the inmune system, wich is what we are trying to avoid when someone is treated for hiv. It may not have a viable cure (yet) but you can live till your hair becomes grey enough no one would guess what was its original colour with standar treatment, making the worst part of HIV the pill side effects and the stigma (things that should also get better as time moves on)
No but I think the whole point is that they may be able to, in the future, find a way to replicate the receptors and create a vaccine or medication that wouldn't require a marrow transplant..at least for certain strains. At least it's SOMETHING. Once the cocktails came out it seems like redestch has halted quite a bit. HIV was one tough son of a bitch to fight. I'm no medical expert but I know it just kept reproducing and was resistant to just about everything. I specifically remember too clearly when it first came out. (Ok not when it first came out but when I was old enough to understand what it was) I was about 13 when I first heard of it (circa 1981?) And I had myself convinced I had it because I has kissed a boy. THAT is how little we knew of how it was spread. Of course I'm talking about a time well after is was discovered and no longer referred to as GRID.
