Advanced birthday wishes are considered bad luck. The thinking behind it is that you are taking it for granted that you'll make it until then and challenging the universe to prove you otherwise.
If you like to plan a house party, inform you neighbors early enough and leave a note at the entrance a few days before and if it's not happening every week, it would be fine. The national anthem is only the third verse anymore, usually the German anthem was longer with three verses, but the first and second are not really allowed. Nobody plays them. If you go to the nude beaches, you can enter and leave them with your clothes, but if you find your place you have to be naked at the beach and in the water. These beaches are very clean, be careful with your garbage.
The first and second verse of the song are allowed. But they are not official part of the anthem and it is seen as inappropriate to singvthem aloud. However: There is no prohibition against singing the whole song.
The reason behind the 'no free water' thing is that meals are very cheap in German restaurants. They make their money mostly by selling drinks. So if you buy a cheap meal and ask for free water in addition it is understandable that they won't be too happy about that...
An additional thought why water is not free in Germany: in Germany waiters and waitresses are paid regular high wages, they do not depend on their tips! It makes sense to sell the water to the customer as the owner pays a relatively high wage to his service personell in comparison to the USA. You are not expected / obliged to give such high tips as in the USA (usually in Germany it is common to give something between 5 - 10%, more than 10% would be extremely rare). So you have to pay the water, but could save it on tips.
There is another reason for not serving free tap water. Most restaurants and pubs are on a "brewery contract". The venue is furnished by the brewery - from tables and chairs for dining to the bar (with appliances), the kitchen, glasses, plates, silverware, and ad devices like neon-signs or parasols - which all in all can add up to ten thousands or even a hundred thousand Euros. In return, the publican has to buy all drinks (alcoholic and non-alcoholic) from the brewery (or designated partner-shops) for a mark-up price, often with a minimum consumption per month, so that the initial credit is paid up after 20 or so years. So technically they are not allowed to serve tap water (even for free), because they bought it from the water authority and not from the brewery.
@@twinmama42 A little add to your perfect summary: Sometimes even the buildings and ground are property of a brewery or some related company. So in fact the operators of the restaurant / bar have rented everything, they own nothing. They have to sell a minimum amount of drinks / food to pay the rent of the restaurant / bar. So free water isn‘t even an option.
on the other hand, you can stay in a restaurant for a nice evening and don't get the bill and have to leave as soon as you are done eating, while you at least occasionally buy some more drinks. and thus we also don't have free refills.
Quiet hours are the same in Switzerland, and trust me it's the best law for your "sleepingness" Though, there is tolerance for special days, like national day, Christmas etc..
About the quiet hours: You can party and Listen loud music, but after 10pm you have to turn down the music so that it is only been heard in your own room. Its about to take care of your neighbours which have to sleep because they stand up early for work. Its just a respect Thing. If you want to Party a little bit longer then 10pm you can ask your neighbours if its ok for them
On the quiet time. If we have a Party, we usually leave a note on the house door (condominiums houses as most us life) 2-3 days ahead that will get a little loud. It does not automatically mean, you inviting your neighbours to the party. Welll, itdepends on the occasion. With love from Germany 🤘 😎
Of course you can have parties. In houses with several apartments you put up a notice or tell the neighbors that a birthday etc. is being celebrated. You can do the same with your neighbors in settlements too. Then everyone knows and usually nobody complains. Greetings from 🇩🇪
4:00 you just buy your ticket on a ticket machine and they might check it on the train however they usually don't check you when you're on a subway or a local coach
A friend of mine always brings his nighbours some Candy before he has a housparty and tells them if they have any music wishes they should text him. So he playes their music between the party music and they don't call the police😂
All of these are absolutely true, Quiet hours don't apply on the weekends, but if you inform your neighbors in advance of a party you don't have any problems. Although our neighbors frowned upon Sunday yard work or washing the car. And yes I was scolded when I wore my bathing suit under my towel in the sauna the first time I went.
I remember calling all of my neighbors when I turned 18 years and planned a big house party so they knew it could be noisy. They were fine with it =) And YES, take your dirty shoes off!
jaywalk: waiting does not necessarily result from willing compliance with rules; as soon as younger children are at crossings, adults should set an example of proper behavior; young children in Germany often walk alone and are therefore at higher risk in traffic; then all adults must show responsibility
Actually jaywalking can have some serious consequences in Germany for certain kind of people. If you jaywalk at red light for example (even in the middle of the night when noone is there), and you get caught by the police you can receive a "point" in the Traffic Register of Flensburg (thats the central traffic register of germany). Having multiple points can result in a dismiss of your driver licens. And what is even more serious, if you are someone who just got his driver license you are on a 2 year - driveprobation, meaning if you get ANY of those points in that time, you will have to make a crashcurse in savety which can costs you >500€. So in total, if your a young person, who just got his licence and you get caught jaywalking by the police it can get veeeeery expensive for you xD
Quiet hours extend to some parts in germany even during daytime from 01.00pm to 03.00pm and everywhere in germany on sundays / holiday`s all day,not just at night.
If you want to learn more about differences between the US and Germany I recommend “German girl in America”, that’s Felicias TH-cam channel and she is from Germany living in the States. Like your enthusiastic reactions to my home country, greetings from Germany
1) Recycling. I actually work in a hypermarket and my position is behind those machines you put the bottles into. I'm the one who has to take the reusable bottles (Mehrweg) and put them into the various cases and change the bags where the shredded unreusable bottles (Einweg) go into. 2) That rule is called "Rechtsfahrgebot" (keeping to the right side of the road). The reason is that on a lot of Germany's Autobahn, there's no speed limit. And even if you drive as fast as physics allow, there's always someone faster than you. 3) Yeah, as a cyclist, I hate it when people walk in the bicycle lane. Especially when the entire sidewalk is 12 feet wide and three people walk so spaced apart that they take up all of it. 5) When you get on a bus, you can buy your ticket from the busdriver and since you have to get in through the forward door, you can't really sneak past the driver. On a train, you need to buy it before boarding itm from what I know, you can't buy a ticket from the attendant anymore (so he or she doesn't have to carry a lot of money). Sometimes you get lucky and nobody checks on you when you ride a train for one stop but it's rarely worth the risk. 6) Tourists have been arrested (and there were quite a few Americans among them) for doing the Nazi salute. Also, the current anthem of Germany is actually the third verse of the "Lied der Deutschen" (song of Germans). The Nazis used the first verse. 8) The quiet hours are from 10 pm to 6 am in most places. Apartment buildings have rules set by the landlord (company) and they can include a noon to 2 or 3 pm quiet hours for "Mittagsruhe" (siesta). Which means, as they said, no construction work and so on. However, that doesn't prevent the noise of traffic or construction outside the building. As other commenters have said, if you want to have a party, for a birthday for example, you can notify your neighbors before so they don't call the cops on you but if you have a party every night, they won't accept that. 13) That depends on the person. I have wished people happy birthdays before it was if I wouldn't see them. 14) That depends on the sauna operator. Some allow clothing (like a bikini suit), but most I know don't allow it. However, nobody forces you to take off your towel, so you can sit in a sauna wrapped in your towel and nobody says anything. And the FKK beaches really do expect people who go there to be naked. However, at the lake in my town, of the dozen or so beaches it has, only one of those beaches has a partitioned area as a nudist beach. That beach is surrounded by hedges with only two openings serving as gates. That's done to avoid people leering at the naked people. 15) As I mentioned in number 1, I work in such a place. And I had to bring abandoned carts back because people simply left them where their cars were and that blocked other cars from leaving. 16) I have crossed the street away from crosswalks or traffic lights multiple times and never gotten into trouble even if police was close by. It really depends on the city/town you're in and how much traffic is on the street you're crossing. If your jaywaking disturbs traffic, then you get into trouble but if you cross the street in a way that doesn't force any driver to slow down or swerve, the police generally turns a blind eye.
6) No, the first verse of the "Deutschlandlied" was not the nazi anthem. It was often sung as an introduction to the actual nazi anthem, the "Horst Wessel Lied" though.
You Are totally allowed to sing „Deutschland Deutschland über alles“! There’s even a recorded version by Heino of it . It’s just that it isn’t used any more and the current anthem is only the 3rd verse of the „Deutschlandlied“! The Nazi anthem actually consisted of 2 songs : the first verse of the Deutschlandlied followed by the Horst Wessel song ( „Die Fahne hoch ….“). This is the one which you are NOT allowed to sing in public .
@@heseme2 yes maybe they would. Which is sad, because „right wing“ at the time the song was composed meant „conservative monarchist“, so the people who sang that song back then would have been considered left revolutionaries 😅
@@Mike8827 I'm not sure its sad. Things just change meaning over time. That happened with "über alles". And let's not forget the second verse posits borders that would be a very aggressive right-wing political statement nowadays.
the reason for the public transportations being so open with them just letting you get on, is because a lot of people have some sort of pass or a monthly-ticket and thus to speed up the whole process, you're not checked when you get on the bus or train, but rather while you're on it. those that bought a fresh ticket fine, those that have a pass also ok, but those that don't have anything like a ticket ... well let's just say most people would rather pay some money than running away and risking having to jumping out of a moving vehicle
They did not cover something most Americans need to know... They do NOT put ice in your drinks unless you ask them to. Want a Coke on ice? Tell them you want ice in your Coke. It comes out chilled because of the way it's stored. Also, same for water. It might be chilled, but not served with ice. Now if you order cocktails that normally have ice in them, they do add the ice. They were recycling only PLASTIC bottles in the machine. You place a plastic bottle into the machine, it takes it, rolls it around to where it can scan the barcode, zips it to the back of the machine and you can hear it crunch up the bottle. There are some vids on YT for German bottle recycling machines.
Me (sitting in Germany): Why am I watching this?! 2:47 My mother told me that one of her friends visited the US and told his buddy: You can say you to me (as in Sie and Du). His buddy was (understandably) sooo confused because it doesn't make any sense in english.
For busses, you can buy them at the front at the driver (or at least, you could in the past, at the moment, at least here, due to corona, the front is blocked to keep the drivers safe). In some places, there is a machine to buy tickets in some busses or street trains, but it is not that common. You can buy tickets in shops and so on and just stamp them on the bus / train / subway or similar.
If you have a house party during the quiet hours you ask your neighbours beforehand and make sure that they are alright with it and it usually only applies for living in apartments. Also about the no advanced Birthday wishes it's a believe here that it's bad luck. As a kid a classmate wished my friend an advanced Birthday the next day her pet died and she was heartbroken, my teacher send us out (me to calm her down) the sad thing is by the time I already knew that her dad is dying (cancer) and I wasn't allowed to tell her and I already knew how horrible it would be because I saw how she grieved her pet.
In Most cities in India we don't use cards or cash... We have mobile phone apps to scan QR codes and transfer money from our mobile numbers which are linked to our bank accounts. They are available at most grocers, Supermarkets and restaurants
I hope more states in America(and other places too that doesnt do it) can get omboard here with this recycling plastic and glass bottles, its one important part that we can do to save the environment and its about time that everyone do their fair share, and its the goverment that is responsible to make sure that happens first of all to fascilitate this..like by the system that we have in Sweden as well, that you get back back money by returning bottles to the the stores. One important step.
If you want to have a party overnight, you tell your neighbors in person beforehand that it can get a little noisy. Almost all the neighbors then say that it's OK. Neighbors want to be asked. If someone says no, then you're out of luck, because the police don't take it as a joke. So always be nice to your neighbors.
We have Quiet Hours from 10pm to 6am AND we also have quiet afternoon about 12am - 3pm!Tthe only Region without the quiet afternoon is Bremen i belive. (I know that very well because im born in Bremen ^^) (sry if my english is trash xD)
Theme anthem: He explained that wrong. The first stanza (which the Nazis liked to sing) is not forbidden. The text of the German national anthem is only the third stanza. Who sings the first stanza shows that he is politically extreme right-winger or a Nazi. All Nazi symbols are forbidden, including the Horst Wessel song. This was always sung after the national anthem in the Third Reich. It was a kind of party anthem.
Alright so, the thing with public transportation in Germany is, on trains or the subway you get a ticket and then a special type of police come and check if you do. On a bus, you pay right when getting in. For both of these transportation options, you can get a card that allows you to get in without paying for the whole year. I'm not sure what they cost but I think it's about 100- 200 euros
It's not the police but just an employee of the train company. If you make trouble, than they call a "special type of police" (Bundespolizei, federal police - which is for train, airports, boarder. Police otherwise is organizes on the state level)
4:00 you directly buy a ticket when you enter the bus unless you have a kolobrie card, then you show that to the bus driver and you can enter and when you leave the bus you have to put it on a sensor thing located near the door.
Most of all is correct, but the long version of the German national anthem was never forbidden and has never been a Nazi anthem. Hitler even hated the second verse because it was about German girls and wine. And it was written long before Nazi Germany came up by August Heinrich Hoffmann von Fallersleben as an Ode to his beloved country. Nearly nobody sings all three verses anymore but it´s not forbidden and its nothing wrong about it. About the quiet hours. It´s ok to have parties sometimes, you just should tell your neighbours before and everything will be fine.
@@Sc4v3r Thats not true, it was never illegal. It was written by von Fallersleben long before the Nazi regime came to power in Germany. You can sing all three, most people just think it's not suitable and a lot people like you do believe it's illegal
About the quiet time. If you have a party (eg: birthday, or the like) or a major celebration, you announce this normally in your neighborhood and apologize in advance for the noise. Most people have then understanding and there are no problems! If one does not do this, the police could stand fast before the door. Especially in smaller towns or villages. BTW, in our house it is customary to take off your shoes directly. You don't have to walk around in socks, you can also put on some house slippers ;-)
Jaywalking is OK but if children are watching, don't do it. That's more important than to get charged by the cops. If you don't follow the rule while kids are around people could be very mad at you and become aggressive.
If you are very strict, the use of "Du" outside of an acquaintance even can be considered a criminal offense, so that one can be reported and punished for it. In Germany it is an insult to a stranger to use "Du" without being asked. In everyday life this usually doesn't matter and anyone who reports this is more likely to be laughed at for it. However, it is enforced relatively strictly against officials such as judges, police officers, etc. It will cost you up to 1000€...
Free tap water is not being served in Germany. They sell mineral water instead. You can like it, you can dislike it - but it's all about the calculation. You have to pay your bills and your employees and are in competition with all the other restaurants around. So if you give away free water, you must raise prices of the food. It's just as simple as that.
Actually people always get it wrong. The German anthem is still the same as in the past. But the first and second parts are not in use anymore because they are not accurate anymore and because it reminds people of German imperialism from the nazi of Era. The anthem itself is much older than the nazi movement, and it was written to unite Germans where ever they live. And no the first and second parts are NOT forbidden. But people will consider you a nazi because of there stupidity and because a lot of right wing people are using it. But yes, you can sing the whole anthem without any consequences. You may just get weird looks from the strangers around you.
The Nazis didn't even use the full anthem, they only sang the "Deutschland, Deutschland über alles" verse and then switched to the actual forbidden Nazi anthem, the "Horst Wessel Lied".
The thing about being naked in the sauna is only true to a limited extent! Because alternatives are offered in the Carakala Terme in Baden Baden. On the first floor in a bikini and swimming trunks on the upper floor of the Greco-Roman Terme without clothes. Both offer saunas.
Sorry I'm very late but I just saw this for the first time. I was a bit shocked. About the formal and the informal 'you': You find the same as in German or similar forms in French (France, Canada, large parts of Africa), Spanish (Spain, most of Latin America), Portuguese (Portugal, Brazil, parts of Africa), Italian, Turkish. I know addressing people is way more complicated in Asian languages like in Thai, and extremely complicated in Japanese. And these are only the languages that I know a little bit about. To think that this aspect of German is 'kind of funny' is really weird. I don't feel like looking it up now but I would presume that different forms of 'you" are common in most languages, and the exception appears to be English.
The most important thing to remember is to not do the Nazi Salute or Joke about Nazi's! I heard some Stories of American Tourist doing the Salute as a Joke and they were forced to go back to America immidiately! The majority of Germany wasn't supportive of Nazi Germany (most were forced into submission by threath of their own or their loved ones safety) so it is very much still an open wound for both germans and german minorities
As a german, its so funny to look at your recations! 😂 One note: In germany we say that to early birthday wishes bring bad luck for the next years! Joking about Hitler and the world wars is one of the worst thinks you can do! For me I don’t want to talk with this person anymore because I feel insulted. One other important thing is, that you never go out without an Identitycard! As a young person, you would often ask for it, when you buy some alcohol or cigarettes. You also have to show it, when the police would stopp you and when you show your corona vaccine - certificat!
Its not the Nazi Anthem "Deutschland Deutschland über alles", the Nazis abused it. It was made in 1840 i think at its a wonderfull song, but yes, because of the nazis abused it its forbidden in germany. Greetings from germany to the United States
The jaywalking is because when the first grader go to school alone there shouldnt learn that from u. Be a rolemodel for them. Yes our firstgrader going alone to school or drive with the puplic bus. We dont have Helicopter parents here. Leaning really early to be independent.
If you want the whole country to know that you've arrived to Germany (maybe even other parts of Europe) go with no. 6 in the town center, the correct mustache would it even make more prominent. Despite of that, it'not illegal to sing the first verse of the german anthem. It's just inappropriate. But combined with my first tip, to become mentioned in tv news is quite conceivable. :D
They actually got the part about the german national anthem wrong. Let's clear this up. The "Lied der Deutschen" was NOT the national anthem under nazi rule. As a matter of fact when the Nazis came along the song was already 90 years old. The song was composed during the first german national movement in 1841. The first verse indeed starts with (translated) "germany, germany over all, over everything in the world." However at the time this was not meant to signify the desire for german world domination, there was no "germany" at the time. Germany was still split into hundreds of tiny little independant states that mainly were united through their language. What the song expresses is the desire for one german nation as opposed to the hundreds of small states. The song even gives the desired dimensions. It says (translated) " from Maas to Memel, from Etsch to the Belt - germany, germany over all, over everything in the world". Maas, Memel and Etsch are rivers, the Belt is a a strait. With the dimensions mentioned the german state would today encompass parts of the netherlands and belgium, luxembourg, a small sliver of france, pretty much all of poland and tchechia as well as parts of austria, Liechtenstein and swiss. It should be mentioned that almost all of that territory at the time was considered part of the german nations anyway. Also as a side note, the first verse directly after "germany germany over all, over everything inthe world" continues with "when it always in protection and defiance, stands together brotherly". There's nothing about attacking their neighbors or anything in there. Now, how does the connection with nazi germany got into this song? That stems from the first verse, and only the first verse, of that song during nazi times was often sung as an introduction to the nazi parties own song the "Horst Wessel song". And of course after WWII the verse "germany germany over all, oder everything in the world" took on another meaning. Interstingly enough the third verse of that same song today is the official national anthem of germany while the first verse is pretty much forbidden.
Name tag, someone else told you etc. I got chewed out by my boss for accidentaly saying du. I dont want to know how mad he would have been, if i would have called him by his first name.

Quiet hours are the same in Switzerland, and trust me it's the best law for your "sleepingness"
Though, there is tolerance for special days, like national day, Christmas etc..
Yeah and once in a while a house party is totally fine, or a birthday whatever
We have house shoes for guests
I m from Germany and I Never used house shous
HAHAHA 😂
Fun fact, Aldi is German, that's why Aldi has the euro for the cart.
Of course you can have parties. In houses with several apartments you put up a notice or tell the neighbors that a birthday etc. is being celebrated.
You can do the same with your neighbors in settlements too. Then everyone knows and usually nobody complains.
Greetings from 🇩🇪
In Germany we say : if the police didn’t show up at least once at your party it wasn’t a good one 😂
Exactly! And the man in the uniform isn't the stripper. 😂
4:00 you just buy your ticket on a ticket machine and they might check it on the train however they usually don't check you when you're on a subway or a local coach
They also dont check so often in Busses. I drive with the bus all jear long and there where only like 2-5 Times when they checked my Ticket .
They missed the quit day Sunday ... and the National Holiday Days ... while it is also quit in germany.
Quiet hours extend to some parts in germany even during daytime from 01.00pm to 03.00pm and everywhere in germany on sundays / holiday`s all day,not just at night.
no grass cutting 😃
Its allowed, but in all contexts I lived in, people would suspect you are a extreme right-winger.
@@heseme2 today having a german passport is right wing nowadays.
the reason for the public transportations being so open with them just letting you get on, is because a lot of people have some sort of pass or a monthly-ticket and thus to speed up the whole process, you're not checked when you get on the bus or train, but rather while you're on it. those that bought a fresh ticket fine, those that have a pass also ok, but those that don't have anything like a ticket ... well let's just say most people would rather pay some money than running away and risking having to jumping out of a moving vehicle
Unfortunately, many people only barely adhere to it!
I just found out that you are reacting to germany after watching your gaga videos for years! awesome
Hey guys you both are awesome, I have been watching your videos for days and enjoying so much, keep the spirit alive.

More accurate: making the nazi salute is illegal. You can go to jail for doing that
4:00 you directly buy a ticket when you enter the bus unless you have a kolobrie card, then you show that to the bus driver and you can enter and when you leave the bus you have to put it on a sensor thing located near the door.
In Chile we don't take off our shoes and it gets messy during winter time. I would prefer the german way.
You can make a hangout for neighbors for birthday parties or parties in generall.
I believe Quiet hours is only applicable during weekdays, Mon to Friday... Iam not sure
Parties on Friday and Saturday are fine just not any other day of the week
@@TrueCyprien Yes, thanks for letting us know.
Well, I guess you have to differentiate between the "Deutschlandlied" and the German national anthem.
@@hilmarhoffmann8963 It's still the "Deutschlandlied". It is simply the third stanza...because THAT one is very clear about its meaning.
We don't talk about April weather 😃
So no weather small talk
on weekend you can can have parties. But its still polite to inform your neighbours about it
that with the shoes isnt really important if you have clean shoes or your only there for a very short time
6:00 House Partys are actually Not that Common in Germany.
Nice couple, I love watching you ;-)
The most important thing to remember is to not do the Nazi Salute or Joke about Nazi's!
If you specifically order tap water in a restaurant it is free. They actually have to give it for free.
As a german, its so funny to look at your recations! 😂
One note: In germany we say that to early birthday wishes bring bad luck for the next years!

Yea the video you watched is only somewhat right on many points tbh.
Greetings from a german.
I Love reagtion to Germany
Bin selbst deutsch.
Overall is in regard to your local identity e.g. Bavarian, Prussian etc
"Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser, unsern guten Kaiser Franz" That was the first verse of the original, Joseph Haydn,Leopold Haschka, Austria 1797 !
Do not adress strangers by their first name is BS.. How would you know a strangers name in the first place!?
