Atlantic Crossing Pt1 - We Broke the Genoa

- Setting sail from the Canary Islands we sail 850 miles towards the Cabo Verde Islands. Strong winds at the start, we have a fast passage, run into problems with the genoa furling gear and even pick up a hitchhiker.
Part 1 of our recent transatlantic crossing. Check back next week as we Visit the Cabo Verde Islands then set off across the Atlantic bound for St Lucia.

another great video. I really appreciate the spares box of cotter pins and such. I see too many videos of folks who do not appreciate the need for organized spares. Your video is also the first I've seen that has shown the Saharan dust. You're in the birthplace of Hurricanes and that dust absorbs the heat from the sun's rays and when it settles on the ocean, it adds it's heat to the surface which adds more power to start a tropical depression. Great stuff.

I started watching your videos about 10 years ago and have all of your DVD's. It's nice to see you're making at least a partial transition to TH-cam. You're videos are very high quality, but the TH-cam space is a lot about authenticity and "reality TV". I think if you're going to make a full transition, you'll need to bring your subscribers a little closer to your lives. Of course you may not choose to do this, but I believe these TH-cam channels are the future of special interest group watchers and the best means for monetizing currently is via something like "Patreon" as is evidenced by channels like Sailing La Vagabond and Sailing Vessel Delos; two of my favorite channels. Best regards, keep them coming.
Thanks Harold 😊 interesting comments... we have indeed considered some of your ideas as indeed people are here on TH-cam (although I doubt Patreon would work for us). I also wonder if TH-cam means "reality" although that is a big part of it. We have always tried to bring people useful info not just shaky-cam shots of our own life. Perhaps thats just our TV view of things though... We will indeed keep them coming...

You don't have be gimmicky to gain the followers or fake a reality for the sake of gaining followers.

TH-cam is (I feel) a lot more interactive and as we're realizing our dream (inspired about yourselves many years ago) I would love to pick your brain given the chance :-) . It seems many sailing experiences tell about line chaffing and breaking. To me it would make sense for someone manufacturer lines that don't chaff..... hmmm business idea..

I was wondering if you hit something off shore would the keel deflect the hit? Great video! My partner and I spent a year on our sail boat and loved it!! The goal for us was to cruise the Bahamas witch we did for 4 months, currently back home on Isle Madame Nova Scotia.
Glad you enjoyed it! ❤️ The keel is enormously heavy and strong. Plus the bow section is reinforced and has 2 watertight bulkheads forward in case of hitting objects offshore. I would not worry...
Hello again! Are the 3 sails we see here (main, 100% self-tacking jib, + genoa/reacher on the forward stay) your full complement? In other words, you don't carry or use any dedicated downwind sail, like a gennaker or asymmetrical spinnaker?

we had a Ross 780 in NZ love the you tube.why did you pick fiberglass not aluminium, like alubat 455?
The Ross looks like a fun sailboat, and even shallower than ours :-)
We considered the Alubat Ovnis but Sheryl didn't like the look of bare aluminum. I was somewhat worried about maintenance owning alu, but in the end the layout and overall Southerly package worked for us..
that shot at 2:38 clearly shows your genoa halyard is loose... should not have that big gap, even at the foot.

Yes :-) its a carbon fibre camera boom! But more like 18' 😊
That's funny. I really LOVE the shots you get with it. Also really love the way you sprinkle in little How-To tips without being overly pretentious (since most of your followers are most likely experienced sailors themselves). And, as others have said, Less music, and keeping the music WAY lower volume than the main is the way to go, because everyone is WAY over-doing the music bit. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK, love your channel.
Hello, I’m curious, do you set the auto pilot to steer according to your course or set it to steer to the wind vane?
Try putting your jib sheet under your lifeline and it will not chafe.

Yes we have the keel most of the way up - about 2/3 up so its swung back, which also helps the boat maintain directionality downwind.

Thanks for the "sub". The bigger Southerlys did all have that rig, but for the 42 it was an option.

Thanks Luis! Many single-handed sailors sail with boat 30-35 feet long. We sailed our 37 footer to the Azores 3 times back in the 90s - beautiful place especially Faial!! Fair winds...
