In our school we have five tattvas. Prithivi, Apas, Tejas, Vayu, Akasha. Square, half moon, triangle, circle, egg shape. Earth, water, fire, air, ether. I would say they are all equal, although Akasha might be seen as the cosmic egg from which everything is born.

One thing that jumped out, though: If the world is itself an illusion that comes and goes, then what use is there in studying parts (tattvas) of the illusion? To recognize the different ways Essence is veiled? It may be of relative interest, but how can it be crucial?
In Kashmir Shaivism the world is not considered an illusion. In Swamiji's words, "The universe is the actual formation of God consciousness in coagulated form." Read more... Concerning this point, Kashmir Shaivism argues that if Lord Shiva is real, then how could an unreal substance come out from something that is real? Siva tattvas are not the highest tattvas.

It’s also very helpful in meditation to know the tattwas… to dissolve them and merge them to enter samadhi.
