The thing that annoyed me to hell with the original Ally beside the terrible battery life was the fan noise. It was highly inconsistent, it would be ultra quiet, then suddenly ramp up and so on. The Steam Deck OLED was always a consistent low frequency hum. Much easier to tune out.
@@firstclaims30the steam deck had 2 different fans. I can't remember which one was which, but one had a nice woosh sound when ramping up and the other had a high pitch whine. I've had both and can tell you it's a night and day difference between the annoyance factor! 😂
I think the reason they don't want people talking about performance is because I believe I heard they intended to adjust the power profiles by a couple watts for the Ally X. So once that software update hits you'll be playing at 32 watts vs 30 in turbo, etc. And I bet that might give you a few extra frames beyond what reviewers are getting now on the devices in hand. I'm surprised no one has really mentioned this in any of the videos I've watched about it.
Yeah we'll see if they do that. The power (wattage) is still shown in the profiles. I personally usually do my own manual TDP setting so that won't affect me.
@@fresco_dinero5155 I’m in the process of upgrading it to match or surpass the Ally X, which arrived yesterday, so I could compare both and although the Ally X feels much better, I can’t justify paying double the price. It cost me $6 for a 2280 adapter, and stuck a 2tb I already had into the Ally.
100% Windows on a handheld like this is a huge letdown. After using the peacefulness that is Steam OS and linux, I never want to touch windows on a handheld like this ever. There can be a handheld that has the performance of a 4090, if it runs windows, it's a skip by me
@@firstclaims30 It seems that I have the most common opinion. Steam Deck OLED is just better as a handheld console. ROG Ally feels like a handicapped laptop, not like a true console. It doesn't even have a proper sleep mode. You can put the steam deck to sleep, come back literally a week later, have the battery still almost at the same % and the console still asleep, waking up instantly in your game. That is a true console. And only possible on Linux, not Windows. Steam Deck also has a completely silent fan, barely audible, because Linux is so lightweight. Also, these devices have limited RAM and cpu, so having Windows is even more stupid, full of Teams, OneDrive, Office 365, Outlook etc always running in the background. You can disable some of them, but after an update Windows promptly re-enables everything for you lol. With Windows, YOU are a product. Steam Deck in a word is: Peace. Also its much cheaper, has better battery life, better OLED screen, better and more silent cooling, etc etc. That helps.
Subscribed. I thought I was the only one that says gigglebytes. Was happily in good company. I had an Ally that I bought on ebay, and it died a few days later. Fortunately the seller is letting me return it. The price was really good, and I fell in love with it. I'm actually very unhappy that it died. Based on that my brand new Ally X is shipping out Monday and I'm super excited.
He said in the video that the "battery upgrade", was what the Ally needed most, actually w hat it needed most was a Sd card reader that wouldn't fry your Sd card...

I'm already predicting an annoying problem I'll have, in case I buy one of these, cuz is the same problem I have now, with my desktop and laptop. Many games keep their save files within the "user/my docs" folder. As I use to play the same games on both my laptop and desktop. Everytime I change from one to another, I have to reconfig most of my game visual settings, because of the cloud saving feature windows has. I can't exclude the "user\my docs\my games" folder from the list of folders covered by the cloud system, the windows won't let me do this and I also don't want to turn off this feature entirely, because I use it a lot for other matters/tasks. It's a pain in the ass having to change my game visual settings everytime. Having the possibility of sharing the game progression save file on both the laptop and the desktop is a super handy feature, but also sharing these d*mn graphics configuration settings is a headache.
I still prefer my SD Oled to be honest. Its just such a complete device. And sure, you have to spend tome tweaking settings to get the best of most games, but thats what i like so much, plus the amazing community behind it.

I have the ayaneo 2 as well, which is way more powerful but the battery just doesn't last more than 2 hours tops, plus the fan is really loud and then windows is not the best OS for handhelds. That's a hard pill to swallow. The rog is so much better than thr deck, and plays all my steam games. Steam deck doesn't work with some games I want to play. Steam deck also struggles framerate wise on a lot of games. The only flaw with the rog was the battery and SD card issues
Steam Deck 2 won't be so cheap like the first one anyway :( I just hope that they'll keep it energy efficient at lower TDPs like the current Steam Deck
Great video as always. I tried the Lenovo Legion go because of all the little gimmicks it had, I wasn't impressed. I then reluctantly tried the original Ally, thinking I'd be returning it as well. Well I fell in love with it, but the xgm mobile port was an impasse.i could not being my self to spend the scalping price for the xgm mobile egpu. As such I returned the Ally. Now that the Ally X has thunderbolt 4, I'll be purchasing it once if it goes on sale during black Friday.
Nope! That's why I put in the part near the end about buying an original Ally instead. I think $350 is an amazing price for the original Ally and definitely worth considering.

While it has Windows it will keep being a mistake. My friend legion go just got usable after he installed Bazzite on it. Now it finally feels and acts like a real console, not like an handicapped pc
@@firstclaims30 Everything from Steam "just works". If you want something outside of steam, even if pirate, use Lutris, and everything "just works" there. Windows is not better, it's just what you are used to
It's more powerful at the high TDP, the deck wins at low TDP. Steam deck has the better operating system. Both are great, just have different strengths.

I can’t see why Asus needed $100 premium over the original Ally. This did not need 24 giggles of Ram. They should have given it a better screen, preferably OLED, more storage, and maybe a bigger battery, and then maybe charge $50 more. The problem is price creep is starting to show up and before you know it every manufacturer is going to want $1,000+ for a handheld.
Better and sharper are subjective. Smoother, yes, but only if you can take advantage of that 120hz over the 90. But if you think having lighter blacks and and no HDR support on the Ally, then to each his own.
@@z-3to204 I have many OLEDs in my house - top end ones. The Steam Deck one to me is blurry . The Ally still has brilliant colours while having a screen where I can see many more little details than on the Deck OLED. The Deck these days is mainly capable of indies and the Rog runs those smoother on that screen. I do love HDR for the games that use it to it's potential but overall the Ally has a superior screen easily .
Too bad everyone is on the asus hate arc right now and asus hasnt exactly gone through their redemption arc yet because the ally handhelds are easily the best windows handhelds on the market. Definitely gonna consider picking this up in the future, possibly open box from best buy or something.
I just can't understand how anyone has a good time navigating Windows with analog sticks or via touch screen. I'd love a device like this that's essentially "Steam Deck, but with better fps and variable refresh rate!" but the lack of touchpads for when you do use the desktop and the use of Windows on a handheld completely alienates me as a potential customer. Instead I'm just going to replace my Steam deck with the OLED model and give my old one to a friend. Very much looking forward to future handhelds like these especially with all the battery life improvements coming to future mobile chips.
Same. Every handheld that released with Windows is dead on arrival to me and many people. Windows is just horrendous on a handheld like this. Not to mention all its BSs like installing Teams automatically, running dozens of background apps you never asked for like onedrive, signing up for onedrive automatically, booting up edge in the background even if you never used it... its insane how bad it is. After trying the steam deck and the peace that is SteamOS on a handheld, just you and the game no more BS, windows would be a huge downgrade, no matter how powerful the hardware is.
@@xpmon I've actually run Bazzite on my deck. It's a pretty comparable experience to SteamOS. Most people don't know how and probably won't want to learn how do this though.

I'm getting the Ally X for sure. I managed to get a Z1X for close to $360 on Ebay and have no complaints besides the battery life.
Those who paid retail price on day 1 got burned for it. fucked up SD card but no global recall provided.
What I loved about the original Ally is the mods for the console, so if you dont like the color you can change it.

Rog Ally X's price is too much in my country, at $920. So I'm sticking with my steam deck until steam deck 2 arrives, I guess.
That's a hard pill to swallow. The rog is so much better than thr deck, and plays all my steam games. Steam deck doesn't work with some games I want to play. Steam deck also struggles framerate wise on a lot of games. The only flaw with the rog was the battery and SD card issues
Normally, I only play emulator and PS3-era games on steam deck. For modern AAA games, I have a decent PC for that.

Depends. I didn't care for the Legion Go, I much prefer the form factor of the ally. The Go has more or less the same performance as the Ally X.

Too bad everyone is on the asus hate arc right now and asus hasnt exactly gone through their redemption arc yet because the ally handhelds are easily the best windows handhelds on the market. Definitely gonna consider picking this up in the future, possibly open box from best buy or something.

I just can't understand how anyone has a good time navigating Windows with analog sticks or via touch screen. I'd love a device like this that's essentially "Steam Deck, but with better fps and variable refresh rate!" but the lack of touchpads for when you do use the desktop and the use of Windows on a handheld completely alienates me as a potential customer.
Instead I'm just going to replace my Steam deck with the OLED model and give my old one to a friend. Very much looking forward to future handhelds like these especially with all the battery life improvements coming to future mobile chips.

Same. Every handheld that released with Windows is dead on arrival to me and many people. Windows is just horrendous on a handheld like this. Not to mention all its BSs like installing Teams automatically, running dozens of background apps you never asked for like onedrive, signing up for onedrive automatically, booting up edge in the background even if you never used it... its insane how bad it is. After trying the steam deck and the peace that is SteamOS on a handheld, just you and the game no more BS, windows would be a huge downgrade, no matter how powerful the hardware is.
Just install bazzite
You can install the steam deck OS on the ally as well, the most famous I've heard of is Bazzite
@@xpmon I've actually run Bazzite on my deck. It's a pretty comparable experience to SteamOS. Most people don't know how and probably won't want to learn how do this though.

Yeah I'm with ya. I much prefer Steam OS to windows. I'm gonna tinker with Bazzite on the Ally X, now that swapping the SSD is so dang easy!
