I have a 1964(tobacco burst) and a 1970 model(tea burst). Both are beautiful. The high notes sing and the low notes are defined. I played cavatina on it and in parts it sounds like a piano. Best electric arch top I've ever played.
Love the minimalist approach you have with your left hand fingers.

I grew up "down the road" from Johnny's shop on 8th. Street in Colorado Springs.
My father gave lessons downstairs too!
Johnny always played a blonde '81 with a Finger tailpiece when i was a kid. That guitar was his #1 unil '89 when he switched to Heritage.
I always saw him with a Heritage "Rose" after that.
That went on until he started playing a burst Guild Benedetto in '04 or so..
..but he REALLY loved that Rose from Kalamazoo!
You would see pictures of him in the paper or whatnot with his D'Angelico (The John Collins guitar) but he would never play it in public.
Johnny was a gentleman of the highest order..
He is certainly missed here in Colorado.
    Thanks for this video gentlemen..
    ..and hello to Gail!

Krazy, my father Ray also taught at Johnny's, down stairs, small world 🌎, those were the days... Johnny was very Modest and kind, had the patience to teach me Walk don't Run....

I have REALLY enjoyed both the Johnny and the Artist Award..i dont have any idea which one sounds better!
..but i gotta' say "Blue Moon" on the 175 is just astounding!
You sound just like Joe Pass Rich!!
    Killer man!!!

Your finger movement is just amazing to watch, buttery smooth, but then again they just flow like a river.

Geez..so many archtop guitars, and they are all fine ones! Hope you will come across a Byrdland one day. Should sound real good in your hands.

My parents gave me a Gibson Johnny Smith around 1972. It was blond with curly maple on the back. It was a beauty!

“Italy is a small place” - Italy is huge. It’s about the distance from the northern tip of New Jersey to midway south through Florida - the whole East Coast of the U.S. just about.

California is about 34% larger than Italy and California is about 2/3 of the West Coast.

Really? Italy is beautiful but the USA is HUGE compared to any country in Europe.

Both instruments sound wonderful, very much prefer that Gibson for depth... Although seems like a refinish or waxing ? Johnny's plans from the D.Angelico, John D. And Smith Knew well of each other in New York and admired each other's talents...

Rich have you ever played a Gretsch G400 and or a Gretsch G400C? What did you think? It's the professional series, not the lower end series.
If you haven't tried those I suggest you try one out. These are modern versions of the classic Gretsch Synchromatics of the 1950s.

The Gibson Johnny Smith Model is such a fine instrument. And it's beautiful in sound and looks, especially in Tea Burst. I never saw one in a Wine finish. Physically, it's too big for me, but a 15" version would have been PERFECT.

Thanks for your review of the GJS. Interesting to me because I have pretty much the exact same guitar. Same colour, almost same year (mine is from 1973 ) You can see and hear it on my TH-cam channel. Like you I thought about relocating the mini jack but in the end stuck with it how it is. It's a wonderful guitar. Sounds great in your hands too!
